Hi all,
Could anyone verify this? I've receive my policy renewal contract and I noticed an aprox. $300 increase compared to last year. Phone the ins. company and they told me that the Civic 06 overall rates have increased (GTA).
I tried already to switch companies but they have the best price overall. So my decision is to stay. I just would like to know if this is true.
Thanks

It is a Civic!
Civic drivers aren't the most safest drivers in the world and you know that!

No, checking the insurance statistics..smart a$$ :D and insurance is all about stereotypes!
Male vs Female, Young vs Old, Experienced vs Inexperienced..
If Maximas were getting riced out, then I am sure insurance would be higher as well.

how does modifying cars relate to bad driving? I've seen maxima owners, ford f150 drivers insanely crappy almost causing accidents...

Modded cars have higher chance of getting in an accident, theft etc. Look at Type R thread or the guy whose car was stolen in a parking lot.
You don't see those threads for maxima, f-150 do you?
Anyone can drive like crap but insurance basis it on statistics. Mississauga insurance rates are higher than Burlington for eg. Risk management. I see more kids driving civics then their moms, and I also see them cutting in and getting into accidents.
Almost every ricer speed racing accident involves a Honda. (Prelude, teg, civic etc.) Just read up news, barely ever you hear about another brand of car. Hence, higher insurance.
Get a quote for emm, corolla, protege and then a civic or mitsu eclipse etc etc.
Btw, insurance is cheaper for accord then for a civic.
Used to own a civic myself, so I know what I used to pay vs. when I switched my car to another brand and I had almost $1000 dollar reduction in rate/yr.
End of discussion.

You can tell when modded Civics go by on the street; they sound like lawnmowers. :)

When 06 Civic first came out, rates based on what they think claims experience will be for the vehicle, i.e Theft, damage to a vehicle in a collision, etc...
Now that it's been out for a while they can get real life experience on the vehicle and are obviously raising the cost of insuring one due to claims experience not being as good as expected. Make sense?
They always do this on new models, some will go down if they've overestimated, in this case going up.

Recently in the Toronto Star, in the business section, they had a list of which cars had the highest and lowest insurance premiums, based on safety and theft.
Civics were at the top of the list, due to being one of the most stolen cars in Canada, and also due to the fact that many Civic drivers and young and inexperienced, and ricers tend to speed/race, causing more accidents.
Like it or not, insurance rates are based on statistics, which could be another word for stereotypes, in this case. Even if you're the best, safest driver in the world, driving a Civic is going to cost you more on your premium, thanks to all the other Civic drivers out there whose cars get stolen every day and are racing each other on the streets.

Thats true but do you ever hear about how old these people are who are driving these cars? You cant just go out and say all modded hondas get into accidents all the time.
Its about the driver not the car.

Argue all you want, but the fact is that insurance companies as a whole have determined that due to higher risk, a Civic will be costly to insure.
Hell even ICBC, a government agency, has the Civic as the most expensive to insure versus other cars of its class (Corolla, Sentra, Focus, Mazda 3)

I think the rates are so high because most Civics are owned by young males and is a vehicle that is easily modded with all the after market parts out there. Too bad, it really is a great car and I love my 2001 Civic LX.

Maybe because Civics are moving up in size as well. They're practically a medium sized car now. No longer that little runt from Police Academy but a bonafide sedan.

You can't say, it depends on things like, where you live, and how far you drive to work, and how far you drive yearly, which coverage you choose, how much your deductible that you choose is, etc etc.

Although you can't compare between people due to different situations, you can compare different cars between one person. ICBC, my quotes:
06 Civic: $3400
07 Fit (current car): $3000
06 Corolla: $3100
Wasn't really looking at other cars, didn't get other quotes.
And people complain about ON insurance...

What kind of coverage do you get with that? And what's your driving record like (offences, tickets, major/minor, years under your belt)?

Recent immigrant, no driving record in Canada (nor do they care...)
2 mill liability
300 comprehensive deduct
1000 collision deduct
5% discount (1 year)
completely clean record.
used for work
work distance greater than 15 km ($2 difference per year...)
Postal code v6n 2**
(the above should be the only criteria ICBC uses, as gender (maybe?) and age was seen as discrimination, so years of experience is used instead - in other words, I should have the same insurance as a 17 year old. I'm 23/m)

Unfortuantely due to not having insurance in Canada for at least a few years they group you in with the higher risk segment of drivers. Just a reality of car insurance....
