Probably clearing out the 1st gen. models before the 2nd comes out. Not a bad deal.

From all the reviews, it looks like HD-DVDs are gonna win this battle. Not surprising that yet another Sony's proprietary format fails in the market.

Does anyone have this unit? Does it do HD via the component video out or ONLY HDMI. I've read the boards and it seems the jury is still out..no concrete answer.

Also no firm answer on the upconversion from component out either.

Cold Deal. No one knows which format will win and for the price if you already have the 360 why not just wait and buy the HD DVD add on for 200$.

To do upconversion of a standard 480p you NEED to use the HDMI connection. As of now, HD-DVDs can be viewed in 1080i through component OR HDMI. This feature can change depending on the movie studios.

Partially true.

SD-DVDs that use CSS protection can only be upconverted over the HDMI output. Yes, that pretty much covers 90% of all retail DVDs. There are some disks that upconvert without issue over component.

You might argue that some other upcomverting players do work over component. Those players are breaking the 'rules' set by the DVD consortium. They are actively ignoring security features imbedded on the disk.

As for HD-DVDs, movie studios have the ability to limit resolution to 480P over components. All studios have agreed not to enable this feature for at least a couple ofr years, as it will hurt early adopters.

I own the HD-A1 and am thrilled with it. In fact ... it's time to watch a movie :)
