Ive been waiting for a deal on this PVR.

Currently the Rogers 8300HD is on sale at Futureshop for $500 (regular $600). It goes on sale from time to time at this price. But then apply the $50 off $500 coupon from the other thread and it comes down to $450. You will need to add something over a penny to get it over $500 as the PVR is $499.99. I added HP paper for $2.95, but you might be able to find something cheaper.

Save $50 on any purchases over $500*

This deal is good until Sept 21.

Edit: I ordered online and did a in-store pick up so I was able to use my FS gift cards to save another 20%.

Wow. Smokin' hot deal. Too bad I already bought one back when FS was giving out $200 GC on $599 price.

In case anyone is interested - at $14.95 / month rental, it'd take you 31 months to even out on purchasing this PVR.

If you have the 15% bundle discount on your bill, your rental is only $12.70, so it'd take you exactly 36 months or 3 years.

Food for thought, when you consider you only have a 1 year warranty when you buy it and it will no doubt get cheaper and cheaper as the time goes by...

rental on an HDPVR is $24.95 (minus 15% is you bundle)

I've heard reports about many 8250 (the non-PVR HD) having problems and had to be replaced which is not a problem if I am renting it. How does the 8300 fare?

Damn, this is a good deal, but i just got my HD PVR free for a year from Rogers (Thanks RFD), so no point in spending the money now, but still $450 is quite a bit of money. I'll wait till my year is up and see what Rogers will offer me at that point...I do love this box and will have to find space in my budget for it for certain.

Or you can just negotiate with Rogers for 24 months of free rental for this HD PVR. It's even easier if you have a satellite receiver to exchange. There's a thread around somewhere.

I'm glad I got on the "free HD PVR for lifetime" promo that Rogers had last year. I wouldn't want to pay $450 for something that could crash on me sometime in the future.

At least with a free rental, I can swap my PVR when I like.

wow ... sweet deal.

For life? That is sweet.

Unless Roger hires a hit man to take you out as part of a cost cutting strategy.

Here is a forum that talks about the 8300HD.

You need to pay something like a $2.99 digital service monthly fee to get those free HD channels.

ok that is just disgusting.

Good thing technology is advancing at lightning speed, and in about 3 years it'll be obsolete anyway....at least it LOOKS that way.

Thanks Miss Cleo.

Are you saying that Rogers is going to discontinue their cable service and/or the PVR functions will be useless in 3 years? If you're talking about the SA8300HD, they'll either upgrade him to a more current model (which is more likely since they don't want to lose a customer) or cancel the agreement (highly unlikely). Either way, he's savd over $25 a month.

When the newer technology comes out, I can easily switch to it by just returning my 8300HD to a Rogers store.

I just picked up a 8300HD at my local store. I also used my Futureshop gift cards so I saved another 20%.

This model supports a external sata hard drive so you can expand the storage.

Thanks. I'm still trying to get my head around the fee structure of Rogers. Kinda confusing but then who isn't.

Bought a HDTV recently and it comes with 6 month free HD PVR. Maybe I just get that for now and wait and see in 6 month whether I want to buy one or keep renting.

I hope Bell has a "Ditch the cable" program though so we can just keep hopping from one to the other to get the free rental. :D

Both Bell and Rogers have these promotions on right now but in order to benefit from them you need to own your equipment and be willing to turn it over to the technician when he installs your new hardware. So if you have Bell Expressvu and decide to switch to Rogers you need to give up your dish and in return you get a free 2-year rental on a Rogers PVR. When that 2 years is up you do not automatically gain ownership of the PVR - it still belongs to Rogers . Now if there is a similar "Ditch the cable" promotion running in two years and you switch to Bell and give away the PVR owned by Rogers, you can be darn sure they'll come after you for majorly inflated replacement costs of that outdated 2-year-old PVR unit that they still owned and that you gave away.

I should point out that I've read that hardly any of the techs actually take the old Bell or Rogers hardware when they do the installation, but I doubt you want to take that chance if the equipment is not actually yours.

When I called it in to activate it, I simply ask if I can get the HD Programming for free for 6 months...he said, sure...!!!

I also have Bell ExpressVu 6100 HD...comparing the two I prefer this...love the GUI (is that what you call it? LOL)...I tried the Bell 9200 HD-PVR at Bell World and I love it...!!!

You just have to get by Bell ExpressVu's HORRIBLE CSR and don't mind being LOCKED in a Contract for 1 or 2 years...!!!

You can always call up a local satellite retailer and offer to buy a broken terminal for like $10. They'll jump at the offer. That's what I did. The technician didn't even ask for it though, I had to remind him (I didn't want it lying around).

Hm, I thought about the same but don't know that's actually doable. What if they ask for monthly bill ? I will probably give it a shot.

BTW, what exactly the technician check/do at the installation ? I suppose they want to see whether you have a splitter or something side ? I do have a spliter to split the incoming cable into family room and bed room and I never use the cable outlet at bedroom. Guess I need to take the splitter out before the guy come ?

As I said in another forum, be careful abotu this. I actually had to giv ethe technicion not only my terminal, but also a recent billshowing that terinal was activated.

It seesm Rogers is wising up to your above scheme, at least in certain areas.

If you get Digital VIP it comes with 3 outlets anyway so you're fine. If you have Rogers highspeed then that's another outlet free too (4 total).

guys before you go out to buy this. Do this::

Step 1:call rogers' sales department, and then ask to be transferred to CSR, customer relations.
Step 2:and after you are transferred, tell them that Bell just called you right now and they are offering you 2yrs of free HDPVR with all the channels. and say that so before i went ahead and said yes, i thought before i switch over to bell i should ask rogers if they would match this deal.
Step 3: they should say YES (if they say no, then try again, maybe you will get a different agent)
Step 4: they will tell you where to pick up your digital terminal and or have a tech come to your house and install it.

and if you do succeed in getting the HDPVR Free for 2Yrs with all the channels then you don't need to buy it now, if you like it then you can buy it later and plus the prices would have gone down too.

for more info on this: there should be a thread here in hot deals section, about free HD PVR from rogers. thats how i got mine.

I thought I just might join the AtHome thingy and buy $500 worth of cards. I wonder how fast you get the GC's in your hands to use. IE - If I ordered $500 tonight when would I likely get the cards to use??

Do RFD'ers sell their GC "at a loss" or do they try for more $$ than they paid. I am not really interested if I have to pay more than what I can get them for....

You get the GC cards fast (2-3 business days) if you order more then $350 as they send them by courier, but for the last week or so Futureshop and Best Buy have been sold out.

RDF's usually sell FS for 10% to 15% off. AtHome gives you 20% off. My friends usually buy from RDFers to save the hassle of AtHome.
