Was at the Scarborough Town Centre Walmart today looking for a flashlight.
I came across a "no name" LED flashlight that uses hand powe; so no batteries required!
Pretty neat gadget, seems sturdy, cheap price, good grip.
- 3 leds, 3x 15,000 candle power
- 1 min windup (120 cycles) gives you up to 20-30mins of light power. (3LEDvs.1)
- Great for powerouts
- Stores energy in a Li-ion battery (3.6V, 40mA).
`
Around 10 left, located in the hardware section.

It depends,
Shake lights uses a powerful magnet. Si you cannot store it close to a credit card, video tape, etc. But they are truely no batteries.
Crank flashlights can have a battery (most of the times a lithium one). Beware, it's not always mentioned on the package. The battery will die after a certain time even is you don't use it (lifepan of the batterie). Some don't have a bettery but then you have to crank it continuously to use it. If your flashlight is a crank model and can hold the charge, then it has a battery, Make sure you can replace it...

oh this sucks. my GF got one from US... Same model... The battery no long hold enough charges after a year or so... That's even you spend a minute or two keep turning the handle...
I think the problem is they use cheapo Ni-Cd batteries inside..

Got one of the crank ones and they truly don't perform as mentioned.
Bought mine from Costco, which usually has pretty good products IMO. But this advertises one minute of cranking for 45 minutes of light. In truth, it's closer to 15 minutes of light, while the last 5-7 minutes see a decrease in lighting intensity so dramatic that it's in fact no longer useful!
I end up having to crank it about every 10 minutes. That's no so useful, as this item is marketed as an emergency/outdoors solution. So, I took it hunting and in the forest, pitch black, here I was cranking that thing every 10 minutes.
It's probably good to scare away the bears, unless that type of noise attracts them...

Also, I have seen the crank model at the dollar store as well, however not sure if they are "real" crank or "fake" ones with just a battery inside...

that can be true.
My buddy and i have two different ones. His is not bright cause his doesnt have a capacitor inside. Mine has a capacitor as well as two CR2032 batteries. For a LED, i would say its pretty up there. It's pretty much as bright as those LEDs flashlights from ledshoppe.

I think you get what you pay for with these. I've got a Garity (sp) from CT that works well and another from LeeValley both of which were $12-$15. Just got another from a discount store for $6 which is poorer quality but it also has a cable for charging cell phones :)

Show em the video! :)I would if I had one! Seriously, I feel sorry for guys who do these kind of jobs. Especially tough when most companies around my workplace are wholesaler/manufacturers who have salespeople who would shoot them down in 2 seconds. But I didn't buy one!

The ones with batteries should never be allowed for the batteries to drain completely. Leave them around where you can crank them once in awhile.

I got a Duracell little flashlight with 2 Duracell batteries included for $1.99.
It was normally $6.49.
Nothing fancy like LED; just a regular flashlight.

Not when you are working in a MRI laboratory with plastic in your pocket. ;)
Most of these flashlight contain a non-rechargable battery with the shaking/cranking to supplement the current draw.
