Yeah I've seen this it's kinda stupid. Sure there are fast electric cars but they still aren't a Ferrari, LOL.
For one thing the electric car probably has some lame range of like 50-100km with normal driving. Race it and you're going to drastically reduce that. So yeah take your dumb looking electric to the track and beat that Porsche. But then the jokes on you when you try to drive home and run out of juice while the real car driver just laughs as they pass you, LOL. Now you don't only look stupid for having a stupid looking car but you look stupid because you look like you're broken down too!
Certainly the Ferrari is going to waste a good bit of gasoline racing a quarter mile or two, but I'm sure it's still going to have a LOT more range after a few runs than the electric will. Plus you're driving a Ferrari--people are going to be saying "oooh and aaah" not "wtf is that guy thinking with a weirdo car like that?" LOL.

um...ok... do a little research first next time might be good.

No I have, and though the Teslas are impressive for electrics and don't look as dumb as other electrics, I'd still rather have a Ferrari thanks ;)
The Ferrari (such as an F430) does cost a little more I guess, but you're not waiting around for charging and interestingly enough the Ferrari is much easier to buy (and Ferraris aren't really that easy to buy as it is). I'd also rather have a Vette which is similarly priced to the Tesla...
You can order a Tesla but when are you going to get it? Next year? LOL.
It's a nice step in that direction, without a doubt--a high performance and more useable electric. Unlikely as it may seem now perhaps in 10 years I'll be saying the opposite (that I'd take the electric over the Ferrari)...

I know, hence my original comments about looking stupid, etc. The Atom there with the electric drive isn't even driveable on the road legally anyway, right? (Don't think it conforms to safety standards?).

yes, that car can go fast in the quartermile but did u see it spin out on that turn at the end?
the handling on this little POS must be CRAP.

what have you all been talking about?
this is not the Tesla
this is as said by SoNgMaN, its the Ariel Atom with electric drive train
sure it is road legal, and it will completely out handle a F430, not to mention the F360

I knew it wasn't the Tesla, I don't get that either--I think someone mentioned it because I was talking about stupid looking electric cars etc.
I was under the impression that this particular Atom was not road worthy but I guess it is.
Still it's not a Ferrari, lol. Like the Ferrari? You could drive that in the rain. I'd love to see you driving this thing in a wet race, lol. Plus what if it's chilly that day? LOL. I'd love to see how you get heat in that thing. Wait theres no "creature comforts" at all. Oops someone sideswipes you on the road? A car runs a light and T-bones you? Well, lets just say I'd rather be in the Ferrari ;)
As for the "not to mention the F360" that's about as confusing as the mention of the Tesla... Like if it outhandles an F430, why need to mention the F360. But it should out handle either of those cars anyway, look at the thing. Look at it's centre of gravity and open-wheel design. That's not a surprise at all.
Still it is not a substitute for a real car, which was my entire point. But nevermind. Go buy your electric-edition of the Atom and drive around with it, I'm sure it's real practical  In fact I was also under the impression this was a one-off, meaning you can't buy one at all...

I just thought it was the Tesla...they're billed as Ferrari and Porsche beaters as well. Sorry guys. I didn't mean to lead you astray.

I dont think anyone said it was a tesla vehicle, he was just stating that that particular electric car in the video is nothing compared to a ferrari I just bought up tesla because of the comments made on the distances of electric vehicles...

sure it is road legal
Actually not really...
To be street-legal, an Atom must be built as a kit car. That means everything, including the engine, is shipped to the owner in pieces. An optional road pack, which includes turn signals, a horn, rear tail lights and headlamps, is also available. The owner assembles the car in his own garage, being sure to follow all appropriate, state-mandated vehicle safety guidelines. Otherwise, the Atom is sold as an off-the-road-only vehicle -- not legal on the highway, but perfectly comfortable at the local track.
That's for the US. So if you don't build the car yourself it isn't road legal, and even then you have to build it with equiment and regulations in mind to make sure it is legal. I'm sure there are some states and provinces where it might be difficult to make it legal given the mandated requirements.
Furthermore the car isn't really designed to be used on the road (and for good reason, look at the thing). It's really intended to be a track vehicle...
It's an apples to oranges comparison, IMO.

Its so funny how people reply and get so worked up on its not a Ferrari, can't drive long distances blah blah blah
The point was just to show something cool and interesting. Heck, did you see by how many car lengths it beat the Ferrari?
Imagine the amount of thrust you'd feel in that thing, its almost like an F1 car.

Exactly. It's more of a race car than a road car. I wasn't getting worked up I'm just saying electric or not it's not really that surprising that a car designed for race/track applications of an open-wheel nautre (the wheels aren't totally open but still) is beating a car like the Ferrari in the video.

Ya the Porsche did a little better, but I wonder why they had rolling starts and didn't start the race from a stopped position?

Watch the top gear episode of the Ariel Atom around its track. Powered by a supercharged k20A motor it hauled ass and the handleing was superb.

because the electric car would PWN gas cars even more from a stopped position
the torque from electric motors are instantaneuos
there is a little bit of delay from gas engine to wheels so traditional drag races would not be a fair comparison

That car is built like a mini-F1 car and probably weighs 1000 pounds; the Porsche and Ferrari are close to 3000 pounds. The Porsche and Ferrari are road cars; if you took that electric car out onto the road and got into an accident, you'd die/be crippled.
It's neat and all, but a total apples-to-oranges comparison. Why not throw 1000 horsepower F1 car into the mix and see how well the electric does ;) .
