i dont know if it's been mentioned b4, but if u u have a shoppers optimum card and like collecting points, heres a tip.
Go buy a shoppers gift card (you get optimum points for them too) and then go make your purchase (whatever it may be).
So technically your getting 2X the points that you would normally get
hope this helps ppl. :)

Tried that before...didn't work! You don't get points buying gift cards, at least I was told then

not sure if it will work, their policy says
"Shoppers Optimum Points are not awarded and may not be redeemed on cigarettes and tobacco (where sold), gifts with purchase, gift cards, lottery tickets, products purchased in the post office, delivery charges (where applicable), bottle deposits/returns (where accepted), bill payments (where accepted) or charitable donations. "

I don't think this works at Shoppers, but it seems to work with HBC gift cards.

Take it from someone who's worked @ shoppers for 4.5 years.
Yes, you will gain points from buying gift cards and NO, you cannot redeem your points for Gift cards.
Hopefully that clarifies a few things.

So you would get double the points?

So you would get double the points?
Absolutely. I have been doing it for the last three years. Every day.
Plus, you can reload the gift cards and earn points. If' I'm buying $10 worth of groceries, and I don't have enough on the GC I have them reload $10 on the card first (as a seperate transaction). I then use the GC to purchase the groceries.

Yea, you do get more points using that method. Say for example if you knew you were going to spend $10, $20, or $50 (whatever) you can buy a gift card, get the optimum points on that, then use the gift card towards your next purchase. If you have an optimum visa, then it's getting even more points.
However, I work at a Shoppers and we were told that we are not allowed to do so because we're "double or triple dipping" our points. I used to do it before, but since the loss prevention lady from head office came to our store, she said it was not allowed and can be used as a base for termination. It's so stupid, regular customers can do this "dipping" method anytime they want, but as employees, we are penalized for doing so.
It doesn't make sense to me. If you can do it at your store, take full advantage of it! I personally find that there are so many flaws with the company...

It makes perfect sense.. it could be easily abused by employees.. same reason an employee of a company that is holding a contest\giveaway is not eligible to win.

As for the gift cards during the 20X the points, I believe that you will still get the regular points for purchasing the GC, but they will not be included in the bonus multiplier and it also doesn't count towards your ($50 minimum for example).
For example, if you purchase $20 worth of merchandise, then buy a 50 dollar GC on top of it, you won't qualify to multiply your reg. points.
This is unconfirmed, but even if it does go through, I've heard that HO deducts the points from your account after the fact. But I've just heard this from other people that work @ shoppers, it's never happened to me before.
So basically, no. I hope this helps

Yes, I can confirm that gift cards, postage stamps, transit fare, phone cards are not eligible for the $50.00 minimum purchase. It is listed as exemptions if you look at the fine print.

I know this is the official policy, but I think it varies by store (in that some stores may not honour it). I know that the SDM by my office does offer 20X on transit tickets and metro passes if you purchase them on 20X days.

This method is also helpful when you live in Ontario & can no longer get points for your prescriptions. Buy the Gift Card then use it to pay for your prescription.

That's an awesome idea. Does anyone understand how the redeeming of points works? Like if you get the max? I think I was jipped before.

ShoppersDrugMart.Ca ... once you figure it out, it's probably one of the easiest programs around to accumulate points and then use them when you're checking out. You just need to read or be told once about how it works, that's all.

This is an awesome tip!!! I have both the Optimum card and an Optimum Visa, and never realized that you could do this. I tried this out at Pharmaprix (Quebec) today and can confirm that I collected points on the gift card. This will be sooo useful when getting prescriptions and stamps.

Shoppers has a number of gift card and Life Experiences (basically negotiated deals with companies that gets you discount packages on all kinds of things) that you can earn Optimum Points for. Lotto 6/49, The Brick, Restaurants and even BlockBuster. There's a lot you can earn points on. Before I make any purchases, especially of tickets (CNE, The Zoo, what have you) or any larger purchase, I check with Shoppers first.

That's really dumb if it's allowed. THanks for the tip, though. If any store that large is careless enough to allow it, then they deserve what they get! I'm going to try it. Thanks

SDM does have one of the best points program. I think the Bay is one of the worst; you need hundreds of thousands or millions of points to get something for free. Virtually impossible unless you buy a lot of stuff there. Anyone else agree?
runamuck

been doing this over a year now..its great!
also take advantage of paying the bill using GC for Swisschallet,Montanas,Milesstones, Kelesys..

it is dumb... but hey, i'm not complaining :cheesygri
many other reward companies like HBC, ESSO, Petro-Can, etc etc. don't allow this "double-dipping" ....

I know I'm a bit late on this, and clearly it does work for some people, but you are misreading the official statement:
"Shoppers Optimum Points are not awarded and may not be redeemed on cigarettes and tobacco (where sold), gifts with purchase, gift cards, lottery tickets, products purchased in the post office, delivery charges (where applicable), bottle deposits/returns (where accepted), bill payments (where accepted) or charitable donations. "
(from http://www.shoppersdrugmart.ca/english/optimum/about_program/collecting_points.html)
So people shouldn't be too surprised if their local SDM refuses to honour it.

I saw this statement too. But it conflicts with the advertising they've been doing for the gift cards, where collecting points is explicitly promoted!
See here:

When I've bought gift cards, the cash register automatically prompts the "Do you have an Optimum card?" question.

I've been doing this for as long as I can remember. We buy as much food as we can + transit passes ... all using SDM GC allowing us to double dip on SDM points.
