YMMV really.
I've heard Dells have the highest 'send-back to mfg' rate, but at the same time, most, if not all, schools and universities use Dells, and they're basically up 24/7 (not to mention people abuse them like crazy).

people say a lot of things. the only truth you should use is that most people are idiots.

do some research on your own, and try to come to your own conclusions.

the same old questions
> what do you need a laptop for (browsing/word/graphics/games...etc)
> what is your budget

that laptop was on sale for $999.99 when all the back to school sales were being pushed. not a bad laptop but like others have said the dell could be had for the same price and you get some better specs with it.

if u only do those things a basic laptop will do. and dell does not suck.. i bought a used dell d600 which everyone kept complaining it was falling apart and sucked, but i had no problems with it. it was because they were idiots who didnt know how to take care of their equipment.

I have a Dell laptop and I would say that they are built pretty good. I find their customer service to be good and they're willing to assist. IMO the Dell laptops seem to offer more bang for the buck.

try to get dell 6400 or 640m. You can get a great configuration for just 1000+tax. THe advt of dell is you can have parts that you want. FOr eg. you can have a better hdd instead of a faster processor and so on. And really get a good laptop and dont forget to "bargain" some good warranty deal. They offer hefty warranty deals when you purchase online. Do post here before you confirm it.

I cant find that first HP one you're talking about. But Dell offers a similar one for $899, but with the X1400 instead of the generic Intel GMA950, on the other hand, it only has 1gb of ram instead of 2gbs.

i find their s/h is pretty fast actually... compared to FS/BB? MUCH faster...

i order stuff f/ Dell usually during their Dell days and i rec'v my order the day after... (i'm sure many other RFDers on here can vouch for that...)

I've seen the second HP laptop with the built in tv tuner during the Preferred
Customer sale. It went for $949 because there it was $150 discount for computers over $1000. I was pretty tempted to buy it at $949 because that would be a better deal than the Dell 6400. But I am waiting for Vista before buying another computer.
