I keep seeing these posts about T&T but I have never been to that store. What is so good about it?

its an asian grocery store

many items there can not be found in a typical grocery store where there is usually one (or less) isles for imported oriental products

plus its not the typical asian grocery store. its actually modern, well lit, and somewhat clean. they scan their product too. so think loblaws but a little smaller filled with asian products

I think T&T's biggest claim to fame is that it's bigger and cleaner than any other chinese supermarket out there right now. and because it's bigger, it has much more variety in terms of imported goods. you might go to one chinese grocery store and only get a choice of a few bags of imported chips. At T&T, there's a whole aisle of imported chips from China, HK, Japan, Korea, Philippines. Also they have the areas of pre-cooked meals like dim sum, baked goods, cooked chinese food which makes it convenient if u're lazy to cook one particular day.

T&T is awesome!

It's like the Asian version of a Dominion. Clean, well lit, tonnes of selection.

The sushi section is very good.

The take-out section is a GREAT value and the selection is very good. You get a really nice meal for $5. The bbq meats are well priced. And I like the dim-sum section too.

Late at night they have the take out foods at a really good low price!

I go there just to eat sometimes!

weirdest location is at promenade mall. the mall is in a predominantly eastern european/ jewish neighborhood. when you walk throught the mall, it occupied with eastern europeans and when you get to the T&T area, whoa , what contrast, lik ei'm in pmall.

Well traditionally T&T has always gone into old mall space. Metrotown used to be the basement of Woodwards. Promenade is old Eaton's space. Although still an odd area to open the first one in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood. I think the Steeles & Warden one is the first free standing custom built T&T.

Thanks to this post I was inspired to go there tonight for their store closing sale that happens every night around 10:30pm.

I got (sorry if I don't know the names.... I'm not Asian):

- Rice dumpling things wrapped in leaves with beef inside X2
- Honey Pork Ribs
- Black Pepper Pork
- HK Style chicken feet (dim sum) X2
- Stewed Beef Tendon (dim sum)
- Pork spring rolls (dim sum)
- Pork Dumplings pan fried (dim sum)
- Half soya chicken
- 20 piece sushi
- 6 piece sushi
- Spicy Bean Curd

All came to $36!!! Now I have lunch and dinner for a few days! Had the chicken feet and tendon tonight, and it was delicious!!

I love T&T.

Also, when you enter T&T, you feel like you are in hong kong or something....
then you see all the employees are of asian decent.....then you wonder why they don't hire any indians, why you might only see one indian in the entire store if you are lucky..

They also have people who stand around and give out samples.
They also have peaceful harmony flute music playing in the backround as well.

I love T&T. Cheap place to get produce, and also any ingredients for the more unique asian dishes I like. Plus the bakery is un-freakin-believable. Definetly make this white boy too fat if he isn't careful.

From the web (http://www.tnt-supermarket.com/about/about-e.php)

"T & T"

The first "T" stands for Tawa Supermarket Inc., a California based Asian supermarket chain of 21 stores. The second "T" represents Uni-President Enterprises Corp., a public company and one of the top 10 conglomerates in Taiwan. The Chinese name of Uni-President is pronounced "Tung Yee". Both Tawa and Uni-President are major shareholders of T & T Supermarket Inc. and they are joined by a number of Canadian investors.

Corporate Profile

To many Canadians, T & T Supermarket is the embodiment of the taste of Asia. It differs from other supermarkets by featuring many uniquely Asian food products not available in other retail outlets.

Shopping at T & T is like taking a journey through parts of Asia where one finds fresh mangoes from the Philippines, crispy snacks from Japan, sauces from Hong Kong, noodles from Taiwan, spices from Thailand and a variety of flavours from China and other Asian countries.

A favourite stop among shoppers at T & T is the seafood department where fresh fish, shrimps and crabs swim in large holding tanks waiting to be chosen by discerning customers. Other exciting finds include the giant elephant clam (Geoduck) with its long trunk, lobster and Alaskan king crab, all gleaming and delectable.

Operation

Freshness and customer satisfaction are the two anchor-stones of the T & T operation. The focus is on quality, innovation and on-going improvement in product selection, customer service and shopping convenience to ensure a high degree of customer satisfaction.

In addition to the many departments found in a regular supermarket, T & T distinguishes itself by having an in-house bakery, an Asian deli, a Sushi and a Chinese BBQ department.

The approach has proven successful and T & T has continued to grow.

Growth

T & T Supermarket Inc. is headquartered in Richmond, British Columbia. In 1993, the first T & T was opened in Burnaby's famous "Metropolis at Metrotown" shopping centre in Greater Vancouver.

Rapid expansion followed and with six stores in Greater Vancouver, T & T crossed the BC province and ventured east in 1999 to open a store in Calgary. In 2000, T & T added a new store in Greater Vancouver at the reputable Coquitlam Centre shopping Mall.

In 2002, T & T established its foothold in Canada's eastern region by opening its ninth store at the prestigious Promenade Shopping Centre in Thornhill, Greater Toronto. Before the end of the year, another T & T opened in Edmonton's West Edmonton Mall, the world's largest indoor entertainment and shopping centre.

T & T is now a household name among many ethnic Canadians. It is also gaining recognition and popularity within segments of the mainstream community.

Since its inauguration over 10 years ago, T & T has received excellent support and co-operation from suppliers and real estate developers across Canada. They believe in the T & T business proposition and have stood steadfastly by T & T as it makes its mark on Canada's grocery retail industry. They are T & T business partners and as T & T grows, suppliers and real estate developers also prosper, sharing the success of T & T.

T & T's spectacular expansion has meant that it is now Canada's largest Asian supermarket chain. It has 8 stores in Greater Vancouver, 2 stores in Alberta (one each in Calgary and Edmonton) and 4 stores in Greater Toronto, making a total of 14 stores in the chain

Anyone know where the Calgary location is? Still fairly new here and haven't found it yet..but we're in the south, so I'm assuming it might be NW or NE?

Can you get the BBQ pork and duck by the pound there? I used to get this as a staple when I grew up in Vancouver and when living in Wpg.... they used to chop it up right there in front of you. YUMMMY!!!!! :D :D :D

Looks like I'll be driving around trying to find it on Sat..while the wife is in class.

Calgary location is in the NE, across from Marlbourgh Mall. It's right beside CMP Classic GM Dealership. Pretty easy to find, but traffic is a nightmare if you use the main roads; use the back roads if you know them.

Yes, they do have a BBQ section just outside of the main store itself that serves all the usual goodies.

Its CLEAN but not cheap.....

That's what I was going to say.
But, you do pay for the variety, cleanliness and the other services/prepared food all in one place.
Personally, I'm not that big a fan of their bakery though. They have quite a bit of stuff, but it seems to me the quality never seems to be on par with smaller, cheaper bakeries.

thelefteyeguy

I don't find it THAT clean?

it's comparable to Dominions and Loblaws

however it's somewhat more clustered than it use to be. At times, there is hardly any walking room, not because it's usually packed but lots of free food counters and such

Compared to the asian supermarkets at No Frills (Midland and Steeles), the 2 supermarkets at Market Village, the supermarket at Denison & Kennedy, the new guy at Kennedy (north of hwy 14), T&T wins hands down for lighting and cleaniness.

Price wise it's higher by a bit...but i like the clientiale it serves...ppl that can pay a little more are less pushy

btw...they have plenty of hand held carts...can't say that for No Frills...they hire a bunch of kids that don't care about anything...but if you want to buy groceries cheaper and dont care about the service and lack of respect the young staff gives you...well go to No Frills.

T&T, like any grocery store, is hit or miss for their prices. Some of their produce prices are extremely cheap. I bought some portabellas there for (i think) $1.99 where they are $3 at any other major grocer. You just have to know what the value of things is.

I hate to go to Chinese grocery store coz they all smell (I hate the stale smell) and somewhat dirty imo. In fact, they are like Chinese-Vietnamese grocery store while T&T is like Taiwanese-Japanese style, which is clean, tidy, and more variety. So, now we've T&T in Mississauga, I will not go to the other 2 any more. They also have pre-packed fresh chinese soup ingredient & steam dishes, which is really great for young couples (like me who don't really know how to cook). Now I cook soup once a week and cook dinner more often.

However, I think their dim sum sucks.

Holy Cow, I went to the local T&T today and was really impressed! Like Pacific Mall but local!

It was incredibly busy and I really wanted some of that takeout food because it smelled sooo good but the lineup was just too long. I saw maybe 4 white people in there and they must have felt so out of place.

Wow, I will definitely have to go back there just before closing time so I can pick up some of that nice looking takeout!!

Thanks for the tips everyone!

Cleaner...definitely. I went to Yuan Ming, wow...the fish area was dirty. They had an empty box of crabs...still some shells there. Also YM's butchers should speak english, we wanted the bones removed...don't say no problem, then yell something "no bones, too much!". I was looking at buying some salmon, I think T&T was $4.87/lb (my guess) and YM was like $4.29/lb.

I was at Promenade Mall's T&T yesterday and bought a small box of 'white pheonix/chicken feet' at their cold-cuts appetizer counter. The lady put a few pieces in a box, weighed it, comes back and removed ONE chicken feet from the box then gives it to me. I was like "what the.....?" Are they that stingy - they can't give one extra piece even if it weighs slightly over (than the amount for a small box)? It was near closing time too. Any other take-out counters I'm normally used to people throwing in extras; never removing if it's just a bit more.

1. It is a chinese supermarket that is clean (comparing with other chinese store).

2. It takes credit card. Most (if not all others) chinese supermarket does not.

3. Its cashier seems to be more educated and can speak much better English (comparing other chinese supermarket).

4. It operates late. At least 10pm in weekday when most supermarket are closed.

5. Comparing with other supermarket that operates late, their price is good.

6. Discounted hot food, bakery after 7pm. A Japanese box set for around $4 to $5.

7. Good food court (the one in Middlefiend and Steeles). I don't know where else has a better food court. It has Chinese (different type of Chinese food), Korean, Japanese. They serve food that I did not see that in other food court.

8. They may not have the best price but they are not expensive comparing some other supermarket such as Dominion or Sobeys.

9. It is close to where I live. Location, location, location.

I agree! I just got a bottle the other day to try it and I like it. I also love the egg custard tarts from the bakery. It's just a fun place to look around. When I was there last week it looked even better than usual as they were getting all the New Year celebration goods ready!

That location should have a mini shuttle bus (ikea style) that picks up people at like broadview or pape subway station and drops them off at the T&T. Even if they just did this temporarly, it would attract a lot of new people and when it gets warm, they could set up tables in an outdoor patio area where the old people could chillax.

We go to the Cherry street site every other week (I rotate with our local Dominion). We like it because it is very clean...at least comparable to my local Dominion (in Leaside).

Prices are cheap, but you have to put it in context. Products that are staples in the various asian cuisines are far cheaper than they are at Dominion...though they may be more expensive than other Asian grocery stores. Take King Oyster mushrooms for example. At T&T I get 2x-3x the amount of mushrooms when compared to Dominion.

Of course, we go for the fun factor of buying things that I cannot get at my local store.

I hadn't heard there is any closing date...

There ARE plans for massive condo development. That whole plaza will be replaced by a big development with towers over 30 storeys tall but:
a) That's a few years away
b) They say they want to keep some tenants and I'd think Galleria would be high on that list

In the meantime it's relatively business as usual there, I think.

The one I go to gives me free random food gifts whenever I spend over like $75 or something.

Usually its a random snack pastrie or rice or something.. but its free and its usually something I would never go out and buy on my own.. so it introduces me to new things.

all their 'cooked' foods are on sale. its a great place for the munchies. of course, during the day, you can buy these also and their selection of junk food is great.

yeah, but the food is mediocre at best when fresh, and pretty awful by the end of the day...

The Cherry street location's the best. Clean, easy to get to (especially for downtowners) and MUCH LESS crowded. Can't emphasize the last point enough. Trying to work through the Markham and Steeles store on a weekend was insanity. I've heard that the Cherry street location has slightly less selection, but it seems to be just as good to me.

Oh, and of course the samples...every T&T offers a tonne of samples.

Where could they possibly put it at the intersection of Hunt Club & Riverside (near where the Cognos building is)? Where did you see the sign?

I can't wait for them to open though.

the prices at the downtown location is also more expensive...not by much but it adds up...=)

i think the promenade location is the best....good size...not as crowded...but they don't have a dim sum section...

warden/steeles is by far the worst...it's a zoo in there...

markham/steeles...it's somewhere in the middle

mississauga....small but not that crowded...small parking lot...

Warden and Steeles is the best location.

The crowd and line ups gives it a better feeling. That place is always packed and is always busy so you know what you're buying is fresh.

The downtown location has the cheapest prices because it's in a crappy location and isn't busy.

I don't think so.

I did a comparison on the fresh baked bread/buns, and I found out the downtown location is at least 10 cents more than the other location.

What item has cheaper price in the downtown location? Your statement is very misleading without proves.

That location is only easy to get to if you have a car but I did hear that they have shuttle buses at 3 or 4 locations around Toronto, one place I heard is CityPlace. The great thing about the location is that you can always find parking unlike the Warden/Steeles location.

You gotta be kidding me.The parking lot is a joke anytime of the day. Tons of people that cant drive and alot of asian women double park and take up 2 spots.

I dread going there as I sometimes had to drop my wife off at TD bank last year when she was working there. Good thing not anymore. Got a couple nice battle scars and free paint samples on my car doors as people open their doors too wide and marked up my car.

N the summer when they have the late hour shopping, I can believe how busy it is at 11pm on a friday!! Its like no one sleeps and just goes and shops.
I dont think its midnite snack cravings at all either.

Cherry street location is good, its huge and attracts not only asian customers but alot of other nationalities. The parking lot is not a zoo as well.

The main reason why people goto T&T is that they have everything all in one place and its more convenient to get ALL you need at once.

Thanks to this post I was inspired to go there tonight for their store closing sale that happens every night around 10:30pm.

I got (sorry if I don't know the names.... I'm not Asian):

- Rice dumpling things wrapped in leaves with beef inside X2
- Honey Pork Ribs
- Black Pepper Pork
- HK Style chicken feet (dim sum) X2
- Stewed Beef Tendon (dim sum)
- Pork spring rolls (dim sum)
- Pork Dumplings pan fried (dim sum)
- Half soya chicken
- 20 piece sushi
- 6 piece sushi
- Spicy Bean Curd

All came to $36!!! Now I have lunch and dinner for a few days! Had the chicken feet and tendon tonight, and it was delicious!!

I love T&T.

Wow, I see you love Chinese food!

My main problem with T&T is their handling of the raw meat.

If you go to the meat counter, the guys wear these gloves to handle the raw meat. When you order, they get a plastic bag and hold it with the raw meat gloves, then pile the meat into the bag, and then put the pricing sticker on it with the same gloves that handled the raw meat.

This process causes the outside of the bag to become contaminated with raw meat, as they do not double-bag it. I don't want to imagine what kind of bacteria are growing in T&T's shopping carts and plastic baskets!

For me, I always get an empty bag from the fruits & veggies section and have the meat counter guy put his dirty bag directly into the clean bag that I have waiting.

expect every shopping cart from every store to be filthy. you should probably be wearing gloves to push the cart if you are paranoid.

newly designed canadian tires have wet wipes at the cart area so you can wipe down the baby area. dominion and a few other grocery stores have baggies and tissue around their meat sections of their store.

you should be more concerned about the conveyor belt at the checkout at all grocery stores. they touch everything. cashiers should have a spray bottle with a disinfecting/sanitizing solution in it along with paper towel or j-cloth at every till. unfortunately you don't see that too often.

its not t&t that is the problem, its the whole grocery store industry and though there are small steps that some places have taken to help remedy these problems, no one company has been able to consistently have standards in place that they can get all of their people to consistently follow

My office is near downtown T and T, I'll check it out. I'm used to going into the smaller stores that are hit or miss.

yeah and prob buy a hot coffee and read the newspaper with their equally old friends and chatting all day about their grandchildrens' accomplishments while taking up the seats and dont buy anything else for the rest of the day.

Wasn't there a problem with the Warden and Steeles TnT where a Chinese radio show was talking about? I think it had something to do with people using their credit cards and debit cards and somehow, they find out later that their information and the card numbers have been stolen and used elsewhere.

They had a few people call in to that show and tell us of their experience. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think it was about a year ago.

T&T, like any grocery store, is hit or miss for their prices. Some of their produce prices are extremely cheap. I bought some portabellas there for (i think) $1.99 where they are $3 at any other major grocer. You just have to know what the value of things is.
YUP! I once saw a sale at TnT on shatake mushrooms (pardon the spelling if incorrect), for $1.99/lbs... They were amazing, my favorite mushroom. They are usually $3.99 or $4.99/lbs.

My GF and I go there because it has what we want in one Asian grocery store. It is a hit or miss for their prices, when things are on sale, they are very well prices, you can buy shrimp , chicken legs, ribs, ground pork, frozen rice balls, Asian Pears, for a very good price... awesome deals sometimes. On the other hand, there are other chinese places that have cheaper prices on instant noodles, drinks and snack foods. But to go from place to place makes me tired.

T&T stands for the country, Trinidad and Tobago.....

Haha where did you hear that? Besides if it was, it would be odd since they have nothing to do with Asian food.

One of the frequently asked questions of T & T Supermarket is about its name - "T & T".

Both Tawa and Uni-President are major shareholders of T & T Supermarket Inc. and they are joined by a number of Canadian investors.

it's great for trying a bit of this and that, due to the large variety of non-white people choices. Also, the takeout area is so cheap esp. if you want a late snack since prices drop even more at night to keep things fresh for the next day.

Not good for boring people though who are afraid of trying anything new.

So Loblaws is buying a trash shop just to do the clean up? LOL! No way. They would only spend cash on a chain that is already a success, not even potentially successful but that with proven track records. T & T is bought because they are well run and making VERY GOOD profits.

And I thought that was OBVIOUS ... :roll eyes:

Anyway, this acquisition of T & T by Loblaws speaks volumes, and effectively refute any unreasonable bashing.

Anyway, this acquisition of T & T by Loblaws speaks volumes, and effectively refute any unreasonable bashing.

They will put an union to it and screw it up.

I worked part-time at No Frills back in 2002 and we had unions. it wouldn't be surprising if all Loblaws or any Loblaws affiliates are unionized.

TandT carries some products that other Asian grocers may not carry. They have many prepared foods that are ready to consume.

You'd never know. Loblaw just announced the deal with T&T, read here. (http://www.cbc.ca/canada/calgary/story/2009/07/24/loblaw-tandt-takeover.html) We'll see how it goes. :)

These things worry me, I hope Loblaws will stay away from running the ship and let T&T continue to do what they do best and that is run an exceptional supermarket chain geared towards the asian demographic. We can only hope.

With T&T, all you have to do is double the parking and use RFID tags to make check-out faster and sales would be 1000 million!

I don't think so. We already have the Garden Mooncake in Hong Kong since like decades ago. The old school bakeries actually had to learn from their modernized way of manufacturing mooncakes in order to survive the competition.

I'd say as long as they have a good chef, anybody is able to make good mooncake. Yes, they (President's Choice) do have a track record of making lousy "Oriental" products, but at the same time, there are (or were) some good, "authentic" ones, incl. e.g. the Memories of Szechwan spicy peanut satay sauce, and a now discontinued frozen chicken rice dinner once mistakenly labelled "Chow Mein" (they now change it to noodle).

Indeed, KFC has some good Portuguese style egg tarts in Hong Kong.

I went to Pizza Hut a few times in Hong Kong and I thought it was terrible, the ones I've had in Canada were significantly better.

I used to -and still do- shop at the "average" asian supermarket - rather unclean, sorta crappy selection, etc. While T&T offers a change of pace, I don't buy alot of the stuff they offer over the average supermarket and the cleanliness and everything is not necessarily worth that +30-50% cost depending on what you're buying. I've even found a huge box of not-as-fresh fruit. Like, when you're feeling the fruits and looking tat the colour of the vegetables, sometimes the "unclean" asian markets have fresher stuff since they're constantly bringing it in. The lines in those stores are huuuge compared to the lines I've seen at T&T.

Besides that, T&T has alotta good stuff and I agree, having that small place ont he side to eat is nice (although, they ARE expensive compared to other places I've been).

The only real thing to complain about T&T is the price.

You all like this place because it's clean?
That should be manditory in all grocery stores. Reason why other stores are not clean is because their customers don't care. No one's complained and I doubt they even had an inspector in some of these places. God knows how they good the pass on their card.>:(

As for cheap produce, you get what you pay for. Use your head people, no one gives something for free these days, especially a huge supermarket.
I never buy produce from T&T. I've found that their like no frills and some of their produce is not what the number 1 sign states.

Other than that they do have a larger than normal food selection.

LOL! Some people just LOVE public washrooms. I for one would avoid them like hell, and visit them VERY rarely. I have been to all 5 T & T supermarkets in the GTA for a total of at least a couple of hundred times over the last 7 years, and have never once used their toilets.

By the way, I wonder who here prepare their meals at home in the washroom?

Really, where are the washrooms located? I have never seen them.
(I suppose it's because T&T is generally the last thing on my route before I get home, so I never really looked for their washrooms as home is not too far.)

Honestly I have no problems with the washrooms at Costco or Loblaws/Superstore. Though some others I have seen, particularly Future Shop, are just nasty.

Well, Loblaws bought T&T a couple of weeks ago, though it'll likely remain under the current management. Don't expect the washrooms to magically go to Loblaws/Superstore standards

Yeah, Google McDonalds fries and you'll get people telling you why they're the best.

Just because Google returns a few bloggers blogging that KFC egg tarts are da bomb doesn't make it so. If you were to ask HK epicurean groups or even survey average HK citizens on the street where's the best egg tarts in HK, none would mention KFC.

HK is a mecca for Chinese food and, with all due respect, it's naive if not blasphemous to think that a fast food fried chicken restaurant can do better egg tarts than the finest bakeries in HK. Next thing you'll probably say is Wendy's make better mash potatoes than Joel Robuchon in France.

I would have to say they have a nice clean set up everything looks like it's fresh and just reasonable. I live in Chinatown East and frequent the shops there to get my food but when I need specialty stuff I go to T&T (one on Cherry Street) the thing I like about it is it's not overpriced for the stuff they have.

Is there anything of interest here that anyone saw?

Now they are soliciting offers for retail space locations on their website. I have never seen an offer like this from a big store before:

But I wonder if any poorly performing stores owned by Loblaws might be converted into T&T's (since Loblaws bought them out.)
