View Full Version : Scammed on RFD; V3i-**PLEASE VOTE**., n00bs & veterans-LEARN from my mistake

So I got slammed a couple weeks ago. Deal too good to be true (basically save $100), he pmd me with his offer. Was a distance Trade., lUser had no feedback, and refused to ship first, or even accept partial deposit and balance payment upon delivery. I have 35 all positive on heatware-so naturally well within my scope to suggest it.

Deal was V3i; full package accessories, receipt (he did a hup in May (3months prior)) included, 2 hours or so on the phone, no liquid damage, nothing wrong with the phone. I got name, phone number (called and chatted-seemed sincere), so I sent EMT of 215 shipped. As soon as I sent EMT, guy says "oops, it's not working-I just unplugged it from laptop and now it's not powering on"...I'm thinking GET OUT NOW!!!!!, he tells me shall he just cancel the EMT, or are we still going ahead with it. I ask him again to confirm there's no out of warantee damage to the phone, and figure, meh., I'll take anyway and send off for repair which is covered as he's giving me the receipt. He EMTs me $35 back that night, so we're down to $180 shipped for potentially a new V3i.

I receive phone and the FIRST thing I see is this.

ALARM BELLS, in case you're not following, that circular void, is where the externally located liquid damage indicator SHOULD be., in-and-of-itself being removed voids the warantee :-0 .

He claims he removed it because it was 'getting scratched off' each time he put the battery in :rolleyes:, insisting he had no idea what the implications were-warantee wise. Being TOO GULLIBLE, I say 'okay'., MAYBE the internal one is white...Well when I remove the transflash which was still in there., I noticed green corrosion on the contacts, as well as a film of water underneath the memory card :| DAMMIT.

When presented with this, the seller now claims that he won't refund anything, because I bought an 'As Is' V3i-for $180...yeah right. After a little serious muscling, his tone changes-but insists on me returning the phone FIRST, and would THEN refund $150., REFUSING to pay the money first.

I sleep on it, and figure screw this., There no way in HELL I'm getting taken on BOTH ends., so-for scraps I can probably make up $50-$75, so I suggest he sends $75 and we call it quits-He agrees and I find a solution on my side.

Keep in mind., If this guy willingly scammed me, would he have refunded the initial $35, and the final $75? The two possibilities are equally disturbing., 1) Either he did try to scam me, and then had a guilt-breakdown...I mean this guy was open., we talked an-Isht load about family, his newborn baby (that I heard in the background and when he was carrying him), I have his receipt with name and all details from Rogers Plus...so could he be THAT insane? to try such a scam with ALL his details? The other possibility 2) is that he TRULY is THEE most OBLIVIOUS and CLUELESS cellphone (ahem V3i) user. I kept suggesting that maybe his wife or someone ELSE dumped it in water, but HE INSISTS it was NEVER exposed to any liquid even after I showed him the pictures???

Now guys, suggestions please, should I mention his details to the forums as a scammer? or shall I leave it be, and give the benefit of the doubt (If these pictures possibly LEAVE any doubt still :disappoin ...)

Anyway., I was much happy to take this 215-35-75=$105 lesson and walk, than POTENTIALLY not even have received the $75 back to begin with. hmpfff..ehhh well....If anything I hope any of you presented with a similar predicament will learn from my mistake and move on to another less attractive/more trustworthy deal.

I have as yet not divulged his personal information as I do not take such an act lightly-and would like to be DEAD certain everybody believes he acted maliciously-and deserves to join the likes of scammers.

That sucks and yes you did get scammed.

Anyone who has a V3i knows a bit about phones thats my opinion .

because people mistake it for razr and those are the people who dont know anything about phones.

I'm pretty sure that this individual had full knowledge of the product and it's condition. He/she was just attempting to make a few $$$ trying to sell this piece of trash.

I say post the information so fellow RFD'ers will be aware of this person.

NOTE: Sorry about the loss of $$$, I've been taken for a scam once but I eventually settled for the $100.00 loss but I posted the info about the darn crook.

Oh damn dood I'm so sorry hear that happened to you. I would be pretty pissed if that happened to me that is why I'm not a firm believer of these emt, paypal or shipping on these RFD sites I will only do it if it's by a well known company in person deals is probably the safest way to do things. Gawd at least you got something back for it.

I appreciate the feedback folks., but I want to STRESS to the few of you who've said no EMT.

EMT itself is QUITE secure. The problem that I made (which I NEVER made prior, and won't again) is do business with someone without established feedback.

THAT is critical. For those who're in large cities local deals are plentiful., but the REST of Canadian RFD'ers (and international)-we have to settle on our online Trust-fact-ometer. Curiously., poor Canadianpsycho or who was it again., 176 all positive heatware, and got suckered with COD :(...mind you I think the loss was minimal-and only the cost of the shipping., but still...Even Heat can be flaunted apparently by some-WHY...is beyond me, as I treat ALL my transaction with the utmost integrity and customer satisfaction-all down to the bubblewrap :D

He's smart enough to take your funds before shipping out the phone. Obviously, he knows you wouldn't be sending him the funds after seeing the phone in person.

This is a calculated scam!!!

I'd say 3rd option, give him a chance to learn his lesson before the 'powerful' people on this forum decide to help you out to bring him down (or expose him like that ipod scammer lol)

I would've got the police involved, but the problem now is you actually agreed to keep the phone when he refunded the last $75.
I'd ask him to refund you the $105 as a goodwill gesture, especially if he wishes to continue selling on RFD and if he doesn't, I would post his info to protect fellow RFDer's. :twisted:

If he doesn't want to do that (remind him that you paid first, then let him ship), it would be fair to post his details.

Thanks guys., I'll see what's up.

I was actually leaving this in limbo the last week and a bit. Finally buying my torx screws (See my latest HOT DEAL) I was able to open it up myself (I never took the pics when I was at the Technicians lab that time), and it has reminded me of the whole ordeal., and that I truly couldn't let it slide without some sort of public disclosure to all my hofo and RFD fellow-bargain hunters.

Scamming is inevitable in this world.

I recently got scammed on ... guess what - eBay. The guy's account apparently got suspended after I paid him for my item, and eBay sent me a mail regarding the issue.

Now I am short $29.99 US - although that's not a lot, it IS a huge sum of money for a student. (well, according to me). I can escalate it to a Paypal claim, but they require a stupid, IDIOTIC, and pointless $25 USD fee to do so. And if I do win the claim, I get a measly $5 US back. Paypal is f**cking useless.

Okay, how weird is this...as a result of this thread a user (who's posted herein), begs me (3 pms) to come online., and proceeds to WILLINGLY and EXPLICITLY agree to buy the very unit we're talking about for $105 shipped to GTA???

Then, as I'm signing off, he affirms he/she'll fire off the EMT promptly so that I will mail it out yesterday (Monday) night....well couple hours later., and even till now, EMT is not received, and user is ignoring 3 (update) pms, and 2 'hi-nothing received on EMT' style MSN lines.....Could this person be an alias of the person who scammed me?

OF COURSE, I HAVEN'T MAILED IT YET., I'm just awaiting the funds first.

I mean, geez, if you changed your mind., be courteous enough to send me a pm/email saying so....why the need to ignore following up, after having such an involved discussion over MSN???

I explained to you right after receiving the EMT that I would refund it 100% - after disclosing to you that the phone was not functioning properly. I in no way begged you to buy it - and you still wanted it. You told me to leave it alone and to ship it out as is. I have all this on our MSN conversation.

So you receive the phone and then tell me about the sticker that was removed - until I heard of this from you - I had no idea what it was for. You then explained to me that it would cost $25.00 to have it checked out - so I agreed to pay you that for the troubles.

Then you call Rogers, and accessed my account (searching through all my info) - Even after finding this out, I still refunded you back some money - as I still felt bad that you are having issues with the phone that you agreed to buy 'as is'

I am willing to post ALL msn conversation, proving that you indeed knew the phone was damaged, and that you wanted it 'as is' - I will also post all information regarding my refunds to you - as goodwill gestures.

You asked for a $60 refund - but I sent you $75.

I also forgot to ship the charger - and shipping that out at my own cost - which you also received.

So all in all - I did all you wanted - and even more. Only because I felt bad for you and the phone had more issues that I was aware of. Then again, I sold it to you AS IS, and in no way had to give you any sort of refund.

I am not refunding anything else to you. If I post up all the conversations, I am sure everyone will agree.

Also, whoever had that conversation with you - is not me. You should ask he mods to trace the account info so you can know its not me for sure.

After all this - I can't believe you knowingly would go ahead and sell a phone that was opened by you, and messed around with. I would never want the phone back - as I dont even know what you have done to it.

The phone was sold 'as is' and I also refunded back much more then anyone else would.

Here is a copy of the closing email from you. (everyone please note that he ased for $60, but I sent $75, plus the charger and covered shipping. More then what was asked of me.

Actually, since you still have that darned travel charger (which I can use as backup for my BT headsets & mom&dads Razrs, tell you what. Take the $15 as shipping, and send $60 with the charger. If you want to send $60 via EMT and ship the charger separately then that would be fine as well.

I'm sure you'll MUCH prefer to get out of this with only $60 vs $150 in losses...frankly it's pretty much what you suggested to begin with of $50-and I think VERY reasonable.

Total refund = $110, plus charger with shipping covered.
Phone was sold as is, with pictures and video to show it shutting off prior to shipment.

I offered to send back 100% of the EMT right after I found the phone to be defective.

I was clearly asked to ship it as is, and not to play around with the phone - the buyer wanted to take the phone to his link, and see if he can have it fixed.

The buyer then asked for the service fee to be covered by myself - which I agreed to.

But then the buyer changed and asked for more of a refund - which I sent.

From the way it looks it wouldn't or worked anyways. so i say he probably didn't say the truth.
thing is next timeyou could ask for picutres before buying it. of the inside as well without the detailed information.

i think you got scammed. and since he doesn't have much feedback like you said of rfd he probably won't care and jsut recreate a new account.

yet its always nice to know the people just incase he reuses taht name so people know not to trust them.

people deserve to know not to get screwed over. then if they want to continue dealing with the person, its their choice after all.

Pictures AND video were sent - showing the phone powering up, on, shutting off for no given reason. Customer wanted the phone anyways. After finding the liquid stickers damaged / removed - wanted the refund which I gave to him.

At no time was I aware of this phone being dropped in water. Only thing I could think of was it being in the washroom - but I doubt steam could cause this.

I never had a problem with the phone, and at least I checked it out before packaging it - and then when I noticed an issue, offered a FULL refund immediately.

I have files regarding the incidents I have had, and have closure on all of them.

Things happen, and I have always been there to take care of them if they do.

So yes - the phone is damaged, but once again - this was explained to you and a FULL refund was offered. Even after all you have done, I refunded you back more then you asked for - only because the phone is useless to me (after all you have said) and I did not see any reason for you to waste money on shipping it back - or me losing more money taking it back and covering the shipping myself.

The entire situation had me promptly replying to you (email, pm, phone) even though I had so much going on in my own life. I was very happy to talk to you and assist you - and in no way left you hanging.

Also - there was no pushing for a refund, we spoke and simply came to an agreement with no threats etc... Regardless of what you may say - I never said NO - and always told you I would take care of the problem.

It has come to this - you posting up stuff that people obviously blow out of proportion. These were small incidents, shipping problems that were easily dealt with. Obviously the person that feels hurt will only post info to help there own case - but then I have to post to help mine. In the end though, I have always taken care of any and all problems.

The LV purses - I screwed up, and posted that. I did not know - and this was during a time where these were hot ticket items.
