I'm looking for a decent restaurant for a student's budget in Chinatown.
I used to go down there as a child, but thinking back, everything there is incredibly unsanitary.
What's the best restaurant/what're the best restaurants?
I remember Pho88 used to be really good. Is it still?

I have been there but I thought it was average. Though I can't say anything really bad about it.

lol funny cuz i cant say anything too good about it either ;)
they have THE BEST hot and sour soup in the city, and their crispy ginger chicken is among the best ive ever had. The owners of spadina gardens also own szechwan gourmet @Bathurst/steeles, for those who didnt know. Their food is the same

This one was recommended to me by a Taiwanese guy... apparently their Hunan Chicken is the best.
Me, I like Hong Shing @ Queen & University. Yummy all around.
The best IMO is Swartow at Spadina @ Dundas. It's insane how good their food is. All the soups ... noodles, rice ... I am salivating right now! The only thing is that their lo mein is somewhat atypical. But otherwise I can recommend this place to anyone who wants something outside the fake "Mandarin Buffet" style chinese food. Beware that they only take cash.. no VISA/MC/Interac.

I like the Gold Stone Noodle Restaurant on Spadina for Cantonese-style food. I often go w/ friends from HK, so I assume it is (at least) somewhat authentic.

The ONLY restaurant down there that you wouldn't have second thoughts about the health department coming down on them is Asian Legend. Damn good food too. But you have to like northern chinese, szechuan food. Clean, modern decor totally out of place in chinatown. It's on Dundas, one block east of Spadina on the north side.

my two favourites - Saigon Palace for ridiculously inexpensive, straight up good food, no MSG in the soup with big portions (looking into the open kitchen and all the ladies in hair nets always makes me feel good), and New Sky, better food, not quite as cheap but still really reasonable (best soups in Chinatown in my opinion).

For lunch I go to Yueh Tung on Elizabeth just steps south of Dundas.
I usually order Chili Chicken or shrimp in lobster sauce on rice.
It's very busy at lunch so if you're going try to be there just before 12 noon.

Highly recommended. The only thing wrong with it IMO is that if you are with a group, the food generally does not come all at once. One person might be waiting 10 mins longer than everyone else.

I haven't been back since the bf and I got food poisoning. We used to always get the shrimp in lobster sauce.
