What's protocol? Can you wear cuff links without a jacket? Or is it "proper form" to only wear them with a jacket?

The traditional "rule" is that cufflinks are for wearing with a full suit & tie. But it's becoming increasingly common to wear them with or without jacket. Although...silk knots are better than metal links when worn without jacket.

trusoulja2g is right. They should only be worn with a suit/tie. However with non-descript shirt-colored silk knots one could pull it off.

I am in for cufflinks without coat or suit.
In general, to make popular the wearing of cufflinks, we should make people to be more aware of what we are wearing actually enhance our appearance.

who cares you can wear what you want you really don't have to listen to anyone as long as you are comfortable with what you wear...i've seen it without suits and really do you look at his cuff links and say hey you are supposed to wear that with a suit....usually if you say that to some guy he'll just bark an insult back so what does it matter

If you wore cufflinks without a suit jacket to meet your high-level-executive boss in a large financial company, your boss will take notice at this... oddity. Because of this, next time he is looking to promote someone as a Junior VP who will meet with many important clients, he will not consider you because he is afraid you will do this again in front of the important clients from all sorts of backgrounds and sartorial beliefs, and then they will automatically assume you are incompetent because you don't know to not wear cufflinks without a suit jacket.

Thanks for all the advice. What sonick said is exactly the type of thing I'd like to avoid, not that I work for a large company but the analogy fits for lots of other companies and situations.

man you believe this guy ...that ur boss cares so much for your cuff links..u won't get a promo that's like saying u wear white socks with black shoes one day by accident he's not going to look back on it and say u can't get a promo because of this...ridiculous...although yes appearance is judge...usually fashion sense isn't...you might as well include the fact that if you are bald or overweight your boss won't give you a promotion because you are ugly and clients won't like the fact that you sweat so much cuz ur fat

I've seen Banana republic have silk knots.
And honestly Rocketo, this is the Fashion and Apparel forum, what the hell do you expect? If everybody followed your "comfortable with what you wear," this forum would be deemed unneccessary.
Sure you can wear whatever makes you feel comfortable. Some people feel entirely comfortable dressing like a slob. Others feel comfortable knowing that they are putting their best appearance forward and are wearing everything properly with style.

Get silk knots from eBay. This seller has lots of colours, about $4.5/pair shipped. http://cgi.ebay.com/10-pair-SILK-KNOTS-French-CUFFLINKS-Choose-frm-134cOLOR_W0QQitemZ220022741346QQihZ012QQcategoryZ1 0294QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Check eBay for cufflinks too.
Retail price cufflinks are ridiculously overpriced. These things sell in China for $5/pair or less.
I'd wear cufflinks anytime with a jacket. Silk knots pretty much whenever. But the cufflinks/knots should always be simple design, not wild or tacky. They should be just fasteners for your cuffs, not obvious jewelry or bling bling.

sorry but appearances do count when you're working in a corporate environment, more so if you're customer facing. people do take notice when you're dressed well, versus a mismatched slob.
and while you may still get a promotion, clients are probably more likely to respond better to someone who looks good versus someone who doesn't. no this is not a fact, just my own opinion (though i'm pretty sure there was a study done that can attest to this).
you could take the same argument and say why does speeling and gramar kount. if ppl kan r3ad wat your righting why shuld it m@tter?

My question is about wearing the proper clothes with the proper accessories at the proper time. Would you wear sandals and a baseball cap with a tux to the opera or to a black tie formal wedding? From the sounds of it, you would (which is definitely your right) but you would probably get weird looks and, if it is a wedding, you would probably insult your hosts. Cuff links are like sandals or a hat, there's a proper time to wear them and to not wear them. My question was to clarify when cuff links are appropriate.
Anyone can wear anything they want whenever they want. The clothes you choose make a statement about who you are, not only in a corporate environment but everywhere, and to say appearance is not judged is nonsense. Consciously or unconsciously, you wear what you wear to influence other peoples' judgements. Other people will always react and initially judge you by your fashion style, it's just a fact of life.
Thanks for your input anyways.

jk jk jk...Spinning cufflanks....I'm feelin that..LOL!!!!...has anyone tried these cuff links combinations:
- Sporting cuff links on a jacket without a shirt underneath?
- Sporting cuff links on a short sleeve shirt?
- The ultimate set up....sporting cuff links with no shirt or no jacket, just have the links stuck to your wrist like a piercing.

Rise from the dead, topic!
Just a few questions:
1) What kind of dress shirt will cufflinks go with? I have the ones with buttons on the cuffs so I'd assume that I have to buy the shirts without this?
2) Where are these shirts to be bought?
3) Being in a full suit is the proper use for cufflinks?
Just wondering because I just received some Harry Rosen cufflinks for free a while ago and I'd like to wear them around.

1. French Cuffs. French cuffs has sleeves that are meant to be folded over. The sleeve/hand part is very large compared to a normal dress shirt.
2. Anywhere that sells dress shirts.
3. Only wear cuff links if you have jacket and tie. If you are lacking either, wear silk ties. Try to match the cuff link with the watch metal. Too many people look like fools because they don't know how to dress themselves.
ideally: Cuff link metal should match Watch metal & Belt buckle, and Watch strap (if leather) should match belt leather and shoe color.

Thanks for the replies! hughjazz mentioned French Cuffs being large in comparison to the wrist, and it has to be folded over, do you mean folded back so it seems shorter, or just so that it has to be folded a certain way to be cuffed?

certain way to be cuffed. The each french cuff has four holes. The cuff needs to be folded once in half and then the holes need to line up with each other so that the cufflink can hold the cuff.
I personally prefer the look of a french cuff shirt to the traditional cuff shirt.
Matching belt color and shoes is a must.

Oh okay, so there needs to be a fold and the two holes need to line up, seems easy. I'm considering buying one for my business conference tomorrow and Friday.
But you mean matching belt and shoes as in.. they must be the same colour? Because if that's what you're talking about, I've been doing that since I've been 14. Looked odd to me otherwise!

French cuffs are also called double-cuffs, this means that the cuff of these shirts are twice as long as a normal shirt. In order to wear these shirts properly, you have to fold the extra cuff back over itself (towards your body) and close it with a cuff-link.

Match the color of your belt with the color of your shoes. ie. Brown leather belt = brown shoes. If you have been doing that since you were a teenager, then good for you, because alot of people that I see everyday have no idea about clothes.

If you don't have a jacket your have 4 sytle options.
1.) Use a Monkey fist (silk knot, operates like a cufflink)
2.) Use double button solution....usually comes with shirt
3.) wear them like a normal cuff
4.) roll em up.
