A bus travelling from New York City to Montreal crashed through a guardrail in upstate New York Monday evening, reportedly killing several people.
The Greyhound vehicle was headed north on Interstate 87 at about 6:45 p.m. ET when it overturned just before Westport, according to the Plattsburgh Press Republican. Several passengers were still trapped in the vehicle nearly two hours later, the newspaper reported.
Westport is approximately 165 kilometres south of Montreal, and is nearly the same distance north of the state capital, Albany.
A state police trooper reported that five people had been killed, but the deaths have not yet been confirmed by a medical examiner. Several passengers were injured.
About 100 emergency personnel responded to the crash. The injured were taken to hospitals in the upstate towns of Elizabethtown, Plattsburgh and Glens Falls.
It was reported that soon after passing a truck the bus crashed through the rails and went down an embankment, overturning at least twice and landing upside down.
Greyhound spokeswoman Anna Folmnsbee said in addition to the driver, there were 52 passengers on the bus.
According to Greyhound's website, the bus, No. 4014, left New York at 1 p.m. and was due to arrive in Montreal at 9:10 p.m.
There is no immediate word on whether there were any Canadian passengers on the vehicle.
Greyhound has set up an information hotline for family members at 1-800-972-4583.
