Since this fashion & apparel forum is new pretty new figured i'd get the ball rolling and make an offical Oakley's thread seeing as its the one item I can't live without & I have so many pairs. Also Oakley's have become quite popular. Talk about why you luv the ( O ) brand.

Which do you prefer O-Matter or Wires? Once I got a pair or wires I found it hard to go back to the O-matter frames, but every pair has its purpose.

Feel free to post pics of your ( O )'s and any pics of spy shots you might come across...

I have Oakley Square Wire 2.0's, black/black. The build quality on these are great, I'm just afraid of scratching them all the time, but still in mint condition.

Not a great picture, but my Oakley (black lenses) and Bolle (blue lenses) sunglasses.

Collection:
Crosshairs: Polished Chrome/VR28 Black Iridium
Square wire: Black/Black Iridium
Square wire: Platinum/Gold Iridium
Square wire: Silver/Ice Iridium
Zero: Jet Black/G30 Black Iridium

Just sold pair the pair of Oakley Straights, i bought off neo.

Im itching to sell most of them.. probably just gonna keep the square wire platinum/gold iridium, unless the new square wire or the big square wires look better.

Currently looking at maui jims. Looking for a more classic style sunglasses. Ones where they'd still be stylish for several years. Only oakleys that I've liked long term were the platinum square wires. Had them for 6 years now, but the frame got bent, so its either buy a new frame or switch to a newer model.

the Oil Drums are siiiiick.....I Fell in luv with them when the 1st came out. Not sure how comfortable you are with buying oil drums on ebay but i've seen some go for $75 USD. You might be better off getting them in the US since the prices tend to be a about 15 to 25% cheaper for certain models. According to the Oakley site.

I'm saving up for a pair of Chrome Ichiro Juliet's with Ice blue iridium frames. They basically look like the XX Metals with silver frames & blue lenses.

I've owned many pairs of oakley wires and a couple o-matter ones and I prefer the wires because they seem to fit better and looks nicer than o-matter ones. My favourite wires are the square wire 2.0 w/ spring hinge and the wiretaps are also pretty good. The x-metal ones are really nice but a little too expensive...

I know there are people who've never heard of them - my friend didn't know what they were until I gave him a pair of C wire for Christmas. I kind of got them from the trading post from RFD

I just picked up a pair of Oakley Polarized WHY 8.0 (Brown with Polarized Gold Iridium lens) (http://oakley.ca/o/o1125d)

They rock. The Gold Iridium is a great tint that really livens up colours and enhances contrast. I definitely prefer it over a more neutral tint.

I also own a pair of Black/Black Iridium WHY 8.0 and Black Chrome/Ice Iridum WHY 8.1

The thing that sucks about the WHY series is that they don't fit into normal sunglass cases. I had to ante up the big $ to get a Large Soft Vault (http://oakley.ca/o/o1990d) to hold them safe.

There are people who don't like Oakleys? Wow...

There are lots.

Some mistakely think they are severely overpriced for the performance they give. What a those people don't know is that Oakley lenses ARE excellent quality optically...can be compared to the best out there.

Now, the styling is another matter, some Oakleys are just weird looking, and meant for a mainly young "surfer dude" demographic. But fortunately they make some more "classic" looking styles too nowadays

How many different sunglass shapes are there and which ones are the "proper fit" for the various face types out there?

I've recently ditched my eye glasses and got contacts instead, so now I would like to find a nice pair of sunglass for driving only.

If I find it's nice and fits my face I wouldn't mind forking over the cash.

BTW, what color tint is normally good for driving conditions?

I find that the Oakley Titanium Iridium lenses to be one of my favourites. Adds great contrast to everything and the mirror finish gives it a great look.

As for fit, you should try different models to see which looks good on you.

I love my black chrome half jackets with ice plarized lenses :) I have a set of jet black frames with fire polarized lenses, but they barely ever get used.

I'd like to get something with the emerald lenses, but there's not many frames that have them available. I woudln't mind some X-metals, but there's not a whole lot of lenses to choose from. I've tried the Juliets on, but they are too small. I'd kill for Romeo or XX's with the emerald lenses.

Guess my other option would be a pair of Splice. Time to do some more ebay hunting, I guess.

I've had a pair of black frame XXs with blue iridium lenses for 2 years now... Fantastic sunglasses! Even though they're not polarized, they're still excellent for when you're on the water, though sometimes the glare makes me wish they were polarized...

I'm not a big fan of Oakley's either! I tend to go for the styles of SpyOptic.....they have some awesome shades....I recently got a pair of XX Metal's (aka Juliets) w/ polarized Plasma lenses as a gift. They're growing on me wasn't sure i'd like the Plasma lenses at 1st but they amazing. Feels like I can stare right into the sun with these. So now thats II pairs of XX Metals. I'm now on a hunt for a pair of chrome/silver Ichiro Juliets w/ ice blue or emerald lenses since I hear these ones are polarized.

I belive the name XX Metal was the North American name but internationally they are known as Juliets.

I checked out the Spy Optic site & they have some stick woodgrain styles on there...Do they have shades w/ metal frames? Can't really tell. But then again have never seen these down here. Are they stores thay carry them?

I've never owned a pair of Oakley sunglasses or considered owning a pair.
But recently I am starting to get interested in buying a pair as they are releasing some new models/styles that look great(different from the traditional Oakley sunglasses).

Thus my question: what stores would have a relatively large selection of Oakley sunglasses for me to actually try them on? Sunglass Hut?

I was at the O store and Sunglass Hut in Newmarket mall today in Calgary, had a look at all the offerings, and because of my smaller facial structure I found the A-wire style fit me best. Got the polarized version for $330. Anybody know of a cheaper place in Calgary that carries this same style?

The only I wished were that the lenses on the front were reflective so nobody can tell where my eyes are "prying"

ebay arent suppose to have fake items especially oakleys. if u spot them and u think they are fake, pls report it to ebay. I sometimes shop at ebay and I make sure when I check out oakley sunglasses I tell those who sell fake ones to take it of the listing or Im reporting them staright to Oakley and ebay. So u folks from Canada dont really have O stores as much as we have in the US huh? Im at the O store almsot everyday and I manage to buy something even if I dont really need the said item. hey i'm paul, long time viewer, first time poster.

over the summer i purchased an Oakley's Spike Titanium.
titanium frames are much lighter than the normal ones. i find that it's pretty much scratch resistant, the frame. pretty cool.

Anyone have stories of the punishment they have submit their Oakleys to?

Here's mine:

I was out of town, visiting the gf and my power steering belt wouldn't stop squealing. I bought some belt dressing, popped the hood and went to apply it but I couldn't see in the shadows, so I took off my beloved Oakely Juliets and stupidly set them on the side of my car.

After checking a few more things under the hood, I dropped it with good force as I usually do. Hopped back in the car and suddenly realized what happened. Looking down my hood I saw a slight bow where the Oakleys were. I expected them to be completely shattered. Opening the hood slowly I was shocked to see them still in tact! I picked them up to reveal 2 indentations in my car where the hood had forced the frames down. Surprisingly, the only damage to them is a scratch on the left lens which had another scratch on it to begin with.

Needless to say, I've learned my lesson. If there's something that I don't like about the X-Metals it's that they're not as easy to "place" on yourself - other than over your eyes. My 9 year old eye jackets used to just hang from my neck or sit snug on the top of my head. These are too heavy for that. The other downside is they're so huge that the oakley vault that fits them.. well, is even more huge haha. Guess they don't call it a vault for no reason...

My guy has a couple of Oakleys from a few years ago, but his favourite is the Penny in titanium/black iridium (Penny is the smaller version of the Juliet, for narrower faces). He has gotten stares and comments from strangers because they're really nice looking. But the thing he doesn't like about them is that they're a little heavy for playing sports.

The Oakely Radar and Flak Jacket just came out recently and he really wants to get one of them for sports. Anybody have any opinions on which one is better?

Just mentioned above that my guy really wants to get either the Radar or Flak Jacket, which just came out in the last month or so and are specifically made for sports. He does marathons as well, but really wants it for cycling. Supposedly the Radars have a built-in cooling system - air flows around the lenses and frame. BOth the Radar & Flak Jacket have the new hydrophobic lenses which shed water (might be good if you're sweating or it's raining).

We checked out Running Room last week and they just started selling them. Checkout oakley.com

Hmm...I wouldn't really say that the Penny is the smaller version of the Juliet. The lens shapes are quite distinct from each other, imho anyway.

Did you get the regular sized crosswire? I thought i read you said u got them for $40. thats a steal if you did. I saw some, but didn't bother since I already had a pair with vr28 lens.. wanted a black/grey pair though. My gf picked up two crosshair S.

From what I recall there were
Gascan, Gascan S, minutes, monster pups, spikes, canteens, half jackets, crosshairs, various wires, some whys, a pair of really beat up romeos, thumps, twitch and few other plastic models.

First time i actually looked at plastic models from oakley. I found the matte black finish to feel extremely cheap. Also found the spike to look and feel cheap as well, for the MRSP oakley suggests.

I saw those beat up pair of romeo's and I think the person in line had them, guess the romeo's won't be so bad once you change the lenses.

I think the CW I got may have been priced wrong if you ask me, since teh tag was almost rubbing off so I dunno if someone swapped the price. Some ppl mentioned they paid a bit more fo rthe CW's

Oakley question for the experts here :) :

1) What is better POLARIZED A WIRE or POLARIZED WHISKER? Reasons, opinions, person experiences etc...

2) Is it much cheaper to buy Oakley's in Asia (China/HK/Japan)? What are the prices like over there, in particular the A Wire and Whisker model.

Thanks.

1) Whichever looks better on you.
2) I vaguely recall that the prices in hk, weren't that big of a difference compared to here.
You're probably better off just purchasing over here at pacific for a discount + no tax.
OR going to the states cause of the lower retail prices and current high exchange rate.

I'm looking for buying Gascan S polished black. I would like black iridium lens, but they are not available for Gascan S. The only iridium available for Gascan is tungsten iridium. Never seen this color of lens in store. Anyone can comment how these would be on this frame ? Thanks!

I just got a pair of Flak Jackets for about half price off eBay, dark grey frames with Ice Iridium lenses. Love them so far.

I got a pair of RX Chop Top 6.0 prescription frames for $80 at the last secret Oakley sales downtown.

I'm looking to get a pair of the Flak Jacket Standards but I'm trying to figure out if polarized or not would be best for me. The price difference is over $100 so I'd like to hear from anyone with experience what the benefits/differences/etc would be between polarized or not.

Also, to anyone that has the Flak Jackets, do you like/love them? I've never had "half frame" style sunglasses and I'm a first time Oakley buyer..any suggestions???

Thanks

If you spend a lot of the time in the sun., i would recommend polarized lenses. Also, look into what the different oakley lenses are capable of doing. Some increase contrast, Iridium lens coating reduce glare, different light transmission, etc.

Anyone own any of the gear Oakley makes for the US military? I was reading about it and they sound SWEET. The glasses are made of Bulletproof ballistic material.

My Collection:

Prescription Chisel 2.0
Juliet Plasma/ Ice Iridium
Valve Black/ Black Iridium
Polarized Half Jacket XLJ Array

Believe it or not, I've heard stories of Oakleys saving troops lives. The bullet proof lenses are no joke.

i would think the lenses would be more protection against shrapnel (spelling?) or some type of debris than an actual bullet in real life. while i have seen the bullet tests and pictures on the oakley site, it's another thing when you're wearing them since the force has to be absorbed by your body (ie. if you get shot wearing a bulletproof vest, the force will knock the wind right out of you). so while you might save an eye if the bullet tests work in real life, i'm sure you're gonna get a bad case of whiplash (or worse)

now flame me!

my collection:
-1st gen Romeo (x-metal/black iridium) - the expensive pair
-square wire 2.0 (silver/fire) - the sporty pair
-why 8.2 (chrome/black iridium) - the dressy pair
-prescription square wire 2.0 (black) - the "so i can see where i'm going" pair

ones i still want:
-crosshair (pewter/black iridium...or possibly black gradient)
-juliet (carbon or x-metal/ruby iridium)
-mag switch (pearl/fire iridium) - now discontinued
-possibly half wire XL (silver/ice iridium)
-overthetop (black/fire iridium) - but i'd have to shave my head
-cyclops visor :D

slowly getting my collection completed

Big Oakley fan here, I find their lens quality just amazing.
Anyways, I've got a broken pair or Pearl White Eye Jackets (yes I know, must be 10 years old) but they have been sitting in my drawer for 10 years! Never got the chance to fix them (couldnt find frame) nor could I trash them, but the Lens are in mint condition
they are non-polarized grey/titanium (no mirror) I believe. Would anyone be interested?

Is it worth the extra money to go for polarized lens? The two I like which fits me properly are the Spike and Crosshair. Polarized version of each are like $80+ extra than normal versions. I am willing to pay for the extra if it helps.

It reduces/eliminates glare off water and snow (in general) it's good to have if you really need it, I actually dislike it because when you're around the city mandy objects (like tinted glass on cars for example) throw these rainbows all around :) In my car I can't wear my polarized ones because of the tint, it's just rainbows everywhere.. so unless you're skying or sailing, it's not a necessity

I am willing to pay for the extra if it helps...IMO its soo worth it to get the polarized lenses, just buy regular spike or crosshair frames from where ever. Or do what I do, get polarized lenses from the U.S (since the exchaneg rate is low now) & sell off the other ones on here or eb@y.

When I went to 1 Florida Oakley store, I was talking with guy & he seemed real cool, when I told him I had about 5 pairs of O's he was shocked. He offered me a pair or new polarized lenses for my crosshairs for $65 istnstalled. He must have gave me some % off since they're normally $75+

Best of Luck!

cheaper route would be the second.

Also, are you a person who tends to get bored of things quickly and would often change styles? If so, you're going to have an extremely difficult time selling the prescribed pair and would likely get a fraction of your price back.

Remember that there is a prescription strength limit on getting lenses on Oakley Sunglasses because of the curvature of the lens. My prescription is too strong to have lenses made for oakley sunglasses so I opted to go the Oakley RX route. There are lots of cool RX styles for most prescriptions and you can even get Oakley transition lenses that turn into sunglasses when you go outside. I also have Rudy Project sport glasses with clip on sunglass, I use those for running and working out.

dell

I'm pretty sure getting actual Oakley lenses are way more expensive and take longer to get since it'll be made and shipped from the states. I don't know about most optomitrists but the place I go to can get regular lenses like the Nikon ones put into both the sunglasses and RX frames. I think your prescription has to be lower then 3 or 4 to be able to have them on sunglasses due to the curvature of the frame. The RX frames can handle most lense strengths.

I have the RX Titanium Chop Top 6.0's and they're the best frames I've ever owned.

They are hideous tho, even comes with his signature and his photo on the inside.

It depands on what you get. Come are made to be intrchangeable like the M frames, Half Jacket, Flack Jacket and Radar. The oil drum, eye patch and Gascan's are not made to be interchangable but you should be able to change the lenses with soem work.

I'm thinking about buying a new pair for my husband as an anniversary gift. It's easiest for me to order online to get the Asian fit, but I want to make sure I get it right to avoid the hassle of returns.

1) Does the Asian fit really make a difference? I'm thinking about getting the polarized half jackets

2) I'm also debating the polarized XX or Minute. He owns a pair of Minutes already, is there a comfort difference between these and the half jacket? I'm just not sure whether you can feel a comfort difference if there's no bottom frame.

3) Does Sam's Club or Costco carry Oakleys?

Thanks :)

Oakley question for the experts here :) :
1) What is better POLARIZED A WIRE or POLARIZED WHISKER? Reasons, opinions, person experiences etc...

The whisker is made for larger faces and has a wider frame.

I love polorized lenses. So much more clearer and crisp. Going to convert all my O glasses into them.

Interesting. I'm going the opposite direction. I find the benefit of polarization to be limited to certain sun angles while near water, or glare while driving into the sun. It's not worth the extra price, IMHO.

Anyone have stories of the punishment they have submit their Oakleys to?

I shut my car hood so hard on a pair of M-frames that both arms popped out and flew 10 feet, and the silver icon on one of the arms came off and was lost. They went back together and are fine. Incidentally, the nylon under the icon is a green tortoise color.

And my all-time favorite: I was jogging at midnight one Saturday night this summer and found an Oakley torpedo soft case in the middle of the road. It had obviously been run over. Inside was a mint pair of Half Jackets with Polarized lenses. (Go ahead, hate me!).

Iridium is a reflective coating that is applied over a polycarbonate base. "Standard" lenses don't have this coating, like grey, warm grey, vr-28, persimmon, etc... I haven't been able to figure out exactly what "iridium" is or if it even has any iridium in it.

Here's a list of the lenses and if they are coated:
