most hollywood movies will be in a 2.35:1 AR(aspect ratio)...some will be in 1.85:1....

widescreen lcd monitors are a 16:10 ratio meaning 1.6:1 and widescreen tv's have a 16:9 ratio meaning 1.67:1.

1024x768 is a 4:3 resolution (1:33:1 in film terms) So the black bars will be huge....probably 40% of the screen if not bigger.

4:3 res is great for cartoon tv shows like family guy and simpsons though because those are done in 4:3 so u get 100% of the screen.

Are you planning on getting this for school and watching the movies in your dorm room? If so, does your dorm room come with a tv?

If it does check to make sure you laptop has video out(which it most likely does), buy the correct connecting cable and just plug it into your tv and watch that way. You'll also need speakers but you could just get a mini jack out to rca connector and attach your laptop sound into the TV and watch it that way.

If it doesn't, but a cheaper laptop with a smaller monitor(much easier to lug around) and buy yourself a 21-27 inch TV. They are pretty in-expensive now. Decent flat screen 27inch is only 300 I think. Then repeat what I said above

Will the black across the top and bottom ruin the LCD ?

no it won't

but if you plan on watching a lot of movies or widescreen videos, then you should really think about getting a widescreen laptop. if it's more for regular computer use, 4:3 is usually better

I have made a decision on a T43 Laptop it comes with a SXGA+ 1400x1050 Flexview screen.

That's a good choice.

At home on all my desktops, I have 4:3 displays running 1280x1024.

However my Dell D610 has an SXGA 1400x1050 display. I'm still very satisfied with it a year later, and it does offer a little more desktop space.

It does make programming more "enjoyable" because usually those environments call for a bunch of "watch windows" and toolbars to be visible on the sides, and the 1400-pixel width enables that feature better. :)

The screen size I`m looking at is 15 inch .
