ok, well afaik i'll be needing a 802.11g powerful enough to give me a connection upstairs (from the basement). I see a lot of models costing $40 and upwards. My router right now is the old school ethernet based 4 port linksys. Aside from setting up my friend's dlink wifi router, i don't know much about them, however i'm confident in 'modding' if it comes down to making the router perform better.

I don't know much about Wifi Routers but I am happy with my DLINK 524 wireless router. had no problems at all whatsoever. However, many people who own DLINK wireless router say that it drops connections so often but it never happened to my router. Maybe I am just lucky ?

I think the major favourite on RFD is the WRT54G or GL. Linux based and 3rd party software is available to upgrade it's capabilities.

However, because wireless N so coming, you might want to consider those. at 4 times the speed and 4 times the coverage, it's well worth it. But I think right now, only "draft-N" is available. But if you're not going to be using wifi other than in your own home, it doesn't matter if it's "draft-N" or real N.

From what I've heard, there's a problem with Draft-N causing interference to everyone near you. I'm not going to bother with N until it's an official standard.

I have the WRT54GL and love it. I'd just get that since it's cheap and the official N won't be out for almost a year.

U can buy a wireless AP to make your present router be wireless. Probably not worth doing since a wireless router is about the sameprice.

I would suggest the Linksys routers, but not v5.
