View Full Version : Walmart: UMD Movies for $8.50

Haven't seen this mentioned yet, but I noticed that here in New Brunswick that a whole bunch of movies for the PSP have been discounted down to $8.50 - kinda like the buy one, get one free deals except that you can buy just one movie if you want.
From memory, some of the movies were The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Identity, Happy Gilmore and The Rundown, so it looks like it might just be Universal titles at the moment. But seeing Walmart have said they are ditching UMDs, it is just a matter of time before they all go on sale...

NICE! I've been holding off on buying any UMDs as they were waaaay overpriced. I'll see if there's anything good.

Who want to watch movie on 4" screen and pay a theatre ticket price. Will you watch more than one time on that tiny screen? UMD's fate is on the track of Minidisc music release. If you are technology collector, it is a good price.

They are clearanced price as production has been scaled way back - Sony is preparing to dump the whole idea of movies on UMD - nobody buys them. Priced as high or higher than DVD upon release? Get real - I'm surprised they lasted this long...

I LOVE my PSP,but I have to agree that UMD's were dead long before they pressed the first copy.Especially since that nowadays you can pick up a 2gig memory stick for the cost of a few UMD's.

I'll buy when they're $1 or $2. I'm not paying DVD type prices for something that can only be used in a PSP. What happened to DVD players with slots for these things?

Other titles seen:
Wedding Crashers
Pitch Black
Chronicles of Riddick
Doom
UMDs are a deserved failure IMHO. There's no easy way to play them on a TV and they were overpriced. I own a PSP and bought ONE UMD set, Family Guy S1 and 2 for $26.99. Because portable Family Guy is well, cool. I have no plans to buy any other UMDs. TV shows are ok on the PSP but the screen is too small for movies IMHO.

...
Even at $8.50, UMD is overpriced. Who in their right mind would want to watch movies on an 4" screen? Maybe some podcast (but that's Apple's thing) but definately not full length feature movie.
I remember watching movies during flights and my eyes were sore after focusing on the tiny screen for so long.
How the hell did Sony come up with this idea is beyond me!

I've never understood why people are so against watching movies on the PSP because the Spider-Man 2 UMD I got with the PSP when I bought it looks pretty damned impressive to me.
And as for the screen being small - such nonsense. I've filled the memory stick with tv shows for when I travel and it works just fine. No problems at all. Not that I'm rising to the bait or anything, but the PSP-hating is getting so old...
I do still think that $8.50 might be too much for me just because you can only watch them on the PSP, but as soon as those things hit $5, I'm so there to pick up a few select titles.

Although at $8.50, UMD is too cheap. Everyone in their right mind would want to watch movies on an 4" screen! Probably not some podcasts (but that's not Apple's thing) but definitely full length feature movie.
I don't remember watching movies during flights and my eyes becoming sore after focusing on the huge screen for so long.
Different people, different opinion. $8.50 is pretty good, but I'd say still not good enough to replace DVD on the TV but to be a temporary sub on long trips.

I dont understand why Sony doesn't offer a re-writable UMD disc or a UMD burner, their sales would probably go through the roof!, I'd be willing to pay @ $2 for a blank UMD, or even a dis that fits into a plastic UMD casing.
This would be such a revolutionary tool, it would also probably cause them alot of loss due to pirating and other non-legal uses, but they would have an edge, imagine, for the PSP2 being able to record from your mem stick to a UMD!, that would be cool, like if you're on Vacation and you plug your Sony vid cam into a PSP and burn the footage right onto a UMD for later viewing.
Ah only dreams only dreams...

The reason for not offering re-writable UMD and UMD compatible writer (for PC) are Sony (and the studios involved) don't want to see another DVD fiasco in which everyone can make a (perfect or almost perfec) copy of their materials, be it games or movies. The problem is, no one wants to invest in this new media because there is a limited way to use it (esp. for movies). They worry too much about potential lost in pirating than making the media popular. An speaking about piracy: people done it anyway without a "UMD-R" and "UMD-RW" disc so their so called preventive measures don't work out.
Also the pricing model does not help. $20 (or even $30) plus Canadian dollars for an UMD movies (w/o special feature, no easy way for home TV playback, no surround sound, etc.) is just too much.
It is not that the quality is bad or anything since the free Spiderman 2 that came with the console looks good on the PSP screen but I think $8.50 per movie is still a little bit too much for what it is. I will wait until they have a real clearance :D

well, it's not a bad alternative if ur going on car trips and don't have a portable dvd player (or an integrated system in the vehicle i.e. family vans in particular)

well, if $8.50 is the clearance price, i'd doubt it'd get any lower at WM anytime soon....
however, if WM really needs to clear stock, and they can't get rid of it for a period of time, well then in that case maybe price will drop lower...

What i was hoping SONY would do is to start releasing DVD Players with UMD players on the side to play UMD movies, so not only can you watch UMDs on your PSP, but also at home.
I was also hoping sony would release a UMD player with the PS3 to watch UMD movies on there also. Its a good idea... but it would be nice if they had more devices that accepted it instead of just the psp.

LOL! Yeah thats what the PS3 needs another 100 bucks added to the already bloated price and not one but 2 sony proprietary or sony made media formats on that thing. LOL.
Why would you want to pay DVD prices for UMD movies to watch at home when they dont even have 5.1 sound? Not to mention the fact that you can just buy the dvd used for less then half the UMD price and make your own PSP movie from that.
Yes I know not everyone has a home theater system but even a cheap one of those can be had for 150 or less no a days.
Sony did have plans to release a stand alone player for UMD but then the format died a real quick death (at least as far as retailers are concerned) and it seems that idea died with it.

why not just ask 'em to scan it ? ;)
btw, the WM i went to actually had a display saying "PSP UMD movies for $8.50!"... and then there were a bunch of 'em that were tagged $8.50....
so if u don't see such thing at ur local WM, they prbly just don't have it yet, or haven't updated new pricing....

Yep! Universal is selling it UMD's for $8.50 and only at Wal-Mart. It's Canada-wide. Trust me it wont go lower. It all depends on the studio and how much they are willing to make a loss on it. Rememebr Universal distributes for Alliance Atlantis

Dude stay on topic and stop trolling the PSP. Sheesh.
PSP is really overrated.
I bet about half or just under half of those who bough it, hardly use it now.
My buddy who got it when it first came out, hardly uses it, AND HE'S A HUGE gadget nut. Money not well spent.
Like someone else mentioned earlier, UMD is gonna have the same fate as the minidisc, KAPTUSKiii.
Sony's an arrogant company and sometimes it's nice that their ideas bites them in the ass. :D

What's there to understand?
It's all about copyrighting. They don't want people burning games or movies.
Sony wants total control, search "sony rootkit".
Something that bit Sony in the ass real hard, which is a good thing.
I hope HD-DVD beats out blu-ray.

Was at the Windsor Walmart and asked around since I did not see any signs or price tags indicating $8.50 for UMD PSP movies, cashier told me nothing goes for that low and I told her about the $8.50 in Toronto she stated firmly that no Walmarts have it at that price.....so fellow RFD ppl when will I prove her wrong when will Windsor get this sale???

if this is a clearance, i know for one thing that there ARE WMs that are slower to update prices.... usually if many WMs have this "sale", other WMs tend to follow.
