Not true:
Only took 14 days to get my d520 which was a price error and Dell had a shortage of parts for certain configs, all in all not a bad delivery time.

What a crock, there are lemons with any manufacturer. I have owned all of the above at some point and time, and they were all very reliable, especially my XPS Gen 2 laptop.

My opinion is that I cannot think of another company that was relied on its past 'rep' for far so long - it (Sony) has not automatically meant quality for a long time.

Thanks for the post OP.

just letting u know, if your gonna buy a laptop go for HP, toshiba Sony. You go for dell, after 1 year it will break. Just so u know :)I disagree - I bought about 6 Dell systems over the last 4 years for various family members and all haved worked perfectly since day one.
I don't generally buy extended warranties unless is it like $10 for 3yrs because I find you just don't need it with Dell units.
IMHO Dell = quality, dependibility, and good Customer Service.

We have hundreds of Dell laptops at work and very few problems. From what I've experienced at work I would buy myself one. If fact several dozen of them have been battered by students for a year or two and haven't had any problems.

so far... watching the prices on the Inspiron 640m, the deals in August have not been nearly as good as in July..

for example, near the end of July they were offering a 640m w/ a t2500 processor, 512 megs of ram, dvd burner, etc. etc. for $864.

Now, they're best deal is a t2050 proc. w/ 1gb of ram for $900 to $1000 :|

any idea if things will improve??

Sony has quality problems. It all made sense when Dell announced their battery recall and the news was Sony had made their batteries.
I would not touch any of Sony's products.
As for laptops, Thinkpad and the Apple are the best. The rest you can throw
a net over them, they are all mediocre. I have never had any problems with Dell. I just ordered a Dell. The final factor was adding the 3 year warranty for
$10. I am protected if anything major happens.

apparently you can call into Dell and use the coupon you get from their Free Time Frenzy website. See this Thread (http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=330107&page=1&pp=15)...
