Wouldnt it be nice to see who does what, what type of career/job everyone wakes up in the morning to do?

At the same time it might help us RFD'ers in somewhat to use these careers as a source point for potential business relations to make money and to endure on a business relationship with the person. Who knows, maybe the person who works at a retail store can get you a deal on something your looking for and WEVE GOT A DEAL!! (thats where the 2 for 1 comes into place).

Ill start, I run a satellite business...

He'll fight for freedom wherever there is trouble, G. W. Bush is there!
G. W. Bush . . . A Real American Hero G. W. Bush is there.

It's G. W. Bush against Qaeda and Destro,
Fighting to save the day.
He never gives up, he's always there,
Fighting for freedom over land and air.

G. W. Bush . . . A Real American Hero G. W. Bush is there.

"G. W. Bush is the codename for America's daring, highly trained, special mission force. Its purpose: To defend human freedom against Qaeda, a ruthless, terrorist organization determined to rule the world."

He never gives up, he'll stay till the fights won G. W. Bush will dare.
G. W. Bush . . . A Real American Hero G. W. Bush!

I work for NCR Canada as a first line maintenance technician. We do work for banks and financial institutions for POS, ATM, Cash Handling equip, etc.

I also work for Marketsource as an HP rep in major retailers, such as Costco, Best Buy, Future Shop and Staples. I demo and promote HP products to customers based on their needs and HP marketing strategies.

http://www.marketsource.com/

I also do occasional work for family and friends who have problems with their computers or entertainment electronics. Things like virus and spyware removals, upgrades and installations, laptop repairs, etc.

Funny thing is, all 3 pay reasonably well, but it's never enough...

At least all 3 are very enjoyable! I can't stand hearing about people who hate to go to work every day.

No, I'm pretty sure it was Greg Land working for Marvel Comics. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/11/Xmen-theend4.png
That character just happens to be my favorite comic book character that's all.

If I had that kind of artistic talent I would be a comic book artist as well and wouldn't bother with the engineering thing.

Internet marketer in an very narrow niche. Work from home, no boss, and have since about 2000. Wife works with me as well, doing my books and stuff. It's an idyllic lifestyle.

I'm slowly progressing from 100+ hour/7day weeks to 40-60 hour weeks, to having a good amount of time off. This year I'll likely take 3 weeks vacation all told, but I'm rapidly moving to the point where I'll be able to go north for the entire summer and still make a very comfortable living. I'm making a lot of changes so that my income increases dramatically while my time needed drops substantially (and getting to the point where none of what I do is time sensitive).

I also have the benefit of stuff like this week I'll probably dump off for a day and take my son out fishing.

How did you get into consultant work? :)

Suresh
Sep 25th, 2006, 01:18 AM
Well, I'll try to be as helpful as I can.

I started my IT career when I was 14. Starting teaching (corporate training) A+ and N+ courses, moved to teaching MCSE, CCNA, CCNP, and ECNE. Then at 22 I decided to quit corporate training altogether and just work. I worked at Microsoft for a while, IBM, and a bunch of other companies in the City. I was building my portfolio and experience while doing other things on the side (writing for magazines, and launching websites, photography)

About 2 years ago, I got really fed up with the corporate world and decided that I didn't want to work for a company fulltime, I wanted to work for myself.

Anyone in IT knows that contract work can pay you as high as 3-4X the pay of a regular fulltime job (depending on location and skillset). So I registered an INC, and contracted recruiters specifically asking them for contract gigs, no fulltime. Contract means i get paid more, can claim more, and get paid overtime. No benefits, so you really have to watch how you save your money.

1. contact recruiters, ask them for contract gigs.
2. Speak to friends about contract work that may be required at their company
3. Contact U.S. companies like CGS and Sapphire that specialize in Contracts. I've travelled all over the world this way.
4. while on contract, network with other contracters and find out who they are working for.

It's always best to engage yourself with atleast 4-5 consultant/contract companies, that way you may always have something coming down the pipe.

Currently there is only a 2% unemployment rate which is unheard of..and contracting is very hot, more so than fulltime employment (at this time)..but generally the market is solidifying towards fulltime employment now that the sector is a bit more stable.

I hope that helps...Any other questions?

are there any 'small' companies?

yes, there are about 10-12 companies that are considered big, after that, the next 40 biggest companies by sales are all relatively small. You could make up a name for a drug company and I wouldn't even know off the top of my head that you made it up.

In the area I work, the big companies have anywhere from 4-8 sales reps, but there are several companies with 1 or 2 people in the same, if not larger geographic area. So yes, there are many small ones, they generally operate a bit differently than large pharma corporations.

An update for me while I'm here in Australia. I'm still working for the broadcast design studio I was with in Toronto but as a freelance designer. So this week I'm working on stuff for the new Hockey Night in Canada opening and a few other elements.

The one down side for me is that the work comes in waves. Oh well.
