I am wanting to take Via Rail to Montreal from Toronto in early December. Does anyone know of any way to get a great deal on the fares? Right now I am being quoted just over $200 return. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

are you a student? if so get an ISIC card and you will get a great discount.

I am not a student, so unfortunately I would not qualify for the discount. I was wondering if anyone has travelled on VIA at that time of the year and taken advantage of any late fall or pre-season specials. I don't want to book now, to find out there will be some special happening.

try to price it with the coupon from visaperks.ca and see what you get.

Wow! $200 return.
A sub-compact will probably use up $70 - $80 worth of gas going to Mtl and back. If you're not going for a long time (eg. overnight or 3 day wknd), it'll be cheaper and more convenient to rent a car and drive there.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I appreciate all of them. I know taking a car is less expensive, but I would prefer to relax and take the train and not worry about weather, parking, and being in traffic tie ups. Is there a link to a page that shows the Sears discounts? It would be appreciated!

make sure to choose the COMFORT SUPERSAVER fare class. I got a quote of 156.88 for an early December trip (adult fare).
