Is their anything I have to worry about going to grade 11?...In grade 10 I did bad in math (sixties) and english (seventies) ....but still have an 85 percent average?...Should I be worried?

Yes you do.
Your math mark (60s) is pretty much what youll get in senior maths. Theres 3 of these senior maths, and lots of good fields use 2 of 3 of these.

It's mostly your average that you have to worry about. As long as all post-secondary-relevant courses (ie. math in your case) are at least 60%, you should be fine. Grade 11 marks don't matter 99% of the time.

Business as in mba?
Remember average is calculated by UNIVERSITY courses only. If fluff courses like gym, history, music, arts bumped up your mark for you... know its not going to matter when you apply to university, cause they wont even glance at it.
Imo, skip music as much as possible, dont do the homework, dont practice, dont come in for recitals. Music is the biggest time-thief of the electives. And its not like university will even look at your music at all.
If you fail music, whatever. You didnt really need that credit in the first place.
*x.x smashy, math marks dont just improve overnight (my way of saying one semester) if you dont pump that math mark to mid-high 80s by the end of the semester, your chances of 90s in grade 12 plummet to about 0%.
Ive tutored people from grade 6-11. Honestly, if you dont have your foundations right (80+), its hell trying to fix it.
Imho, go get yourself a tutor NOW. Tell them you need your mark up to a 90 for grade 11, so youll stand a chance in grade 12. Since your math is a bit weak, Id suggust you go to wonderkids... they baby you like hell there, it smells funny, and they're slightly rude... but they dont beat around the bush like other places. Theyll say, "You suck at this. Go sit next to the grade 6 over there, and do the same thing as them." if you need it.

Wow, don't you guys think you're being a bit harsh on him? I've always kept around a low-80s average in my main courses like math, french (went to french high school) and sciences, even in grade 11. Even though I made maybe 83-84% in Math 11, I finished with around the same thing in grade 12. I've always told myself to try my best, then I know I wouldn't be dissapointed with the result because I put out 120% effort.
I would agree with one poster though. If you would really like to raise your marks and got in the sixties for math, you should consider getting a tutor.
Still, I'd say just to do your best, and try to not worry too much. Stress can affect grades a lot to.

From my experience, grade 10 was a cakewalk compared to grade 11. The differential difficulty level was exponential, not linear. >:(

I know someone who almost failed math in grade 9-10 and is doing one of the best in gr 12...
Gr 11 is the grade where you realize you have to start working hard if you haven't started. If you've been slacking in grade 10, or weak in certain areas (math, for your case), grade 11 is your chance to try to pick it up. If you can't do it by grade 11, grade 12 will be hard. If you learn to manage time and work by grade 11, then grade 12 will slide by very easily.
Also just from personal experience if you want to do business related things in university theres almost no use for ALL 3 sciences... I am doing a science related course in University and I didnt even take all 3... at first you like to think of it as a "challenge" but the challenge will kind of crawl up your !@#$ eventually and you'll cry about why you took the course in the first place  .. it doesnt really matter that "you dont need the course", if you work hard and you get a low mark naturally your self esteem goes down and that's never good to have in school.. if it's too much of a challenge or if you don't feel interested enough to enjoy the Sciences dont be obligated to take all of them! But if you can take the challenge (and do well) then kudos to you.. :)
PS English in HS was bull!@#$. At least for me it was. If you were high and you wrote an analysis on a piece of abstract poetry work you'd probably get the highest mark in the class.

In order:
-Shouldn't be too hard, just make sure you understand everything..IMO, hardest unit is Trig Identities...conics/loci isn't that hard, just make sure you can understand the properties of them.
-Memorization, memorization, memorization and learning. Everything is memorization except mitosis/meiosis/genetics/photosynthesis, it's gay IMO.
-Physics was hit or miss for everyone...In my class, for each test the teacher had to adjust what the test was out of just so the class could get a passing mark...for the Energy test, it was out of 36, people did so baddly he had to make it out of 30 while I had 33/36...therefore I got 110%. :|
-I hated unit 1, it was all about atomic crap, I liked the quantitative aspects, stoich; solutions, gases. 10% Lab where you perform titration, get a competent lab-partner and it's not bad...the written part isn't too hard.
-Never took it, school doesn't offer it either.
-Relatively easy, math is simple...don't think it's all add-subtract, you have rules and techniques to follow (underlining, and memorizing the format). Case studies are hard..well only because our teacher insisited you have the exact answer as the book...which was written by Professionals. You learn some "laws" of accounting, hard to memorize at first, but as time goes on you understand them.
-You failed Grade 10? Damn, better get it in summer school...
-Music?

english is hella more important than math (arguably)
in BC, if you don't get over 82 final in Gr.12, you have to go take ANOTHER test called the LPI (i believe) to qualify for some university courses

Grade 10 marks I find are not an indication of how you do in the senior grades. In Grade 10 Academic Math I got a 70, and a 72 in Acad English. In Grade 11 I took the U level for both classes and got 85 in both. Meanwhile, most others in my Math class who got 80s and 90s in Grade 10 found Functions and Relations extremely hard, and got 60s and 70s. As long as you pay attention in class and don't go in with the mindset that the course is too hard, you should be fine.

Nope. Not being hard on him.
If he is averaging 80 somewhat with fluff courses, no way is he going to manage a mid80 average for mba somewhere decent. math+english need to be 85 absolute minimum, even it they are your "weak" subjects. They're required for pretty much everything.

Hi since this thread is already started, I might as well ask my question here since I am going into grade 11 as well. I was wondering which courses I should take, I need a course where I can half-ass in, the easiest course possible, with very little homework..that is not gym nor any of the arts.
A little background info on myself
Last year got a average around the 85-90 area, had a 90% average in math despite my class average being around the 50s, and mid 80s for english, 90s for accounting, math and english supposedly being the courses that matter. My only 70s were in history..74, and gym..78.
As I need a group 3 credit I will be taking either american history, parenting, anthropology, or physical geography, which one is the one i can half-ass in.
I also need another course I can half-ass in for a free credit whether it is one of the ones mentioned above, or one of the lower tier math courses.
Courses I am certain I will be taking are :
Accounting or TIK (Computer science)
Biology
Chemistry
Physics
Functions
English
Thanks for any input

TIK is grade 10...I think you want grade 11...don't take Grade 11...you won't know anything. Take accounting.
I already gave the low-down before...but I'll do the ones I didn't do.
Functions: I didn't take it, but damn they go at a slow pace, which is the reason why I think people do bad..you get bored easily. F&R, the teacher just did 3 examples and let us loose.
English, most worst course ever....I can't review because it varies teacher to teacher. But it's ********e.

Take the 'introduction to anthropology, psychology, sociology', easiest course for me ever. I sat there rocking back and forth in my chair, went out of the classroom for half the period, and only put effort in the final project (which I got 100 on), and didn't really study for the exam.
Final Mark: 95 (I didn't do some in class homework...)
But my friend also took physical geography and she got 94.
It depends on the teacher, and it depends on which of the subjects you prefer. I did well in the anthro/psych/socio course because I enjoy it ... that and because I enjoy reading psych texts...

just gotta get at least 80% in english if you don't wanna take the lpi.. but that's for ubc, varies from university to university. imo high school not really that important, be sure if you'll have enough credits to graduate, work your ass off on the courses that's gonna be counted for university. everything else, just have fun and take what you enjoy~ high school is pretty much about having fun

Not really. 85+ is pretty much standard expectation. In fact, some universities dont accept anyone under 80 english.

Well, its not like thats remotly close to what Im going into. Didnt do much research into that, and Im not really expected to. My point still stands though.
Seeing that english and math are BOTH not at even 80, major work is needed. Encouraging someone to do good is one thing, but giving the guy false hope is bad. Time to work harder.

Personally I found gr11 harder then grade 12, because its the first time science gets spilt up into groups and also the time when you start to get down and dirty in some of the subjects. The only thing you have to worry about is taking and passing the courses that your are required to take in order to take your Uni pre-reqs in gr12. Just tuff it out, I mean you just gotta put the right effort in and you will see the grades come out. If you are having trouble in math, ask those that are not for some help, or get help elsewhere cant hurt to ask around, same thing goes for english if you need it.
Also any comments about grades people are making, it grades, and even classes that matter TOTALLY depend on which Uni or College you apply to and which program you are trying to get into.
If your avg for gr12 ends up in the mid 80s you should be able to get into most schools for something you want.

People first of all thanks for all the responses. It really means a lot to me. I regret taking all three Sciences but since my family is all in Science I should do fine in that course. For math and english I already found a tutor btw its called Oxford Tutoring..maybe expensive but ill appreciate it more. My math mark was 66 and my english mark was 77. The rest were really good. If you are wondering why I took music was because the class average was 94 which is wow. I will really try hard next year.

Well, I graduated High School in Ontario as the last year that OAC (Grade 13) was being offered so I'll give my 2cents.
From grade 7 right up until grade 12, I did pretty much 0 work. I scraped by with 60s in ALL my classes (excluding auto class and law....93 and 82 respectively). My maths were 60s all the way with the exception of grade 11 math where I finished with a 51 and my OAC calculous where I got a staggering 42.
In my last year (OAC) I decided I wanted to start trying as I wanted to go to university to do my BA in Law. I went from 60 averages from grade 7 right through to grade 12 to an 82 percent average in my final year. In grade 12 physics I got a 55, in OAC physics I got 80. In Grade 11 law I got 82, in OAC law I got 91. All of my classes I did better on in my last year as I was motivated to make sure I wouldn't be stuck with nowhere to go after high school, and because I actually enjoyed my courses in my last year as well as the teachers then the other years. In your final year, they treat you more like an adult and almost (but not quite) as an equal. It made me respect them more, and I did my work because of it.
I guess what I am trying to say is it all depends how much you are going to put into your studies and your courses. If you scrape by and not care at all, you can bring it up when the time comes, but you're putting all of your eggs in one basket this way and it may not work out. Just make sure you put school first and find a way to motivate yourself to do as best as you can.
In case anyone is wondering, I was accepted for Law: Concentration in Business law at Carleton U and Criminology with a Concentration in Law at Ottawa U. Both schools offered me a small entrance scholarship. They focused solely on my last year of classes and did not take into account my failed OAC Calculous as it had nothing to do with my program.
So anyway, relax, you'll do fine.

I don't think you need killer marks to get into a good business program. I did grade 12 (chem, bio, physics, functions, religion, english, algebra), finished with an 84% average for those and that was good enough for any normal program save for engineering science, etc.
I do agree that the foundations are very important. You need a solid base to build on and to have confidence in your ability.
Still, as long as you have a fine foundation and the ability to learn, I don't worry too much about the marks. As they say, if you seek to learn, the marks will follow. But if you seek only marks, then eventually they will become very hard to achieve.

Just got a couple q's...
I want to do Journalism at Ryerson University or Sheridan collage, my average was around 65 last year (grade 10) since I slacked off the ENTIRE year. I mean, I didn't do ANY homework, just did projects when they were do and got by the tests/quizzes.
In Journalism, you don't NEED to have a high average in Science/Math/Business/etc.. those courses. Going into grade 11 this year, I am gonna try this year + grade 12. I am really good in English, I can get 80-90 easily. In grade 9 + 10 I got 76 + 75 in English, because I didn't do anything.
If I have a really good mark in English, and just get away with passes on the other classes, will Ryerson/Sheridan journalism programs look at math/science/etc when I really am only going into an English program? For Journalism, it's going to be print journalism, so writing and such.
Just wondering because Math is my WORST subject and I took applied this year instead of Academic (grade 11 applied math this year). I am also dropping Science this year aswell (grd 11).
So can anybody tell me, would getting into a Journalism program at Ryerson Uni/Sheridan collage require me to have a high average in ALL my courses? Or just English?
Thanks pleaaase respond.

i have a good suggestion for you.
Try to get Co-op in highschool!!! Very valuable. I regret for not taking that in high school because everyone was like "it sucks", "its a birdy course", etc which i ended up taking all math, science, and full course load. But, right now when i think of it...it is good stuff and if you put that on your resume, you will have better chances of getting a job than someone who does'nt have any job experience.
Once you get into university/college, most people wont have the time for a part-time job (depending if you can handle it or not)......most will end up studying, etc. then when ppl graduate, most ppl lack work experience. So, its good to get some coop experience in high school if you can.
Right now, i'm in college and some of my friends are at University. They are struggling with marks and it is 100X difficult to get a coop job than in high school.
So, its not necessary for you to take 8 courses full courseload (if you are in a non-semestered school). I suggest you to take Coop in grade 11!!!
Anyone else agree?

One of my friends in high school took instead of 2 of his courses, and it was interesting at the time. However, in hindsight, he says it was alright but totally useless to him now that he has graduated. I guess it depends on whether the co-op term can help you get a job in the same field later on.

I agree with Octavius as well. Grade 10 marks are hardly an indication of a students capability. Although not doing well likely means you're not trying hard enough. As you get into the higher grades (for me it was OAC), thats when you should try to step it up.
I think for the most part, everyone has some good critical suggestions (and its good you're taking it as constructive criticism).
In hindsight, if I knew how important h.school marks were (choosing any university, getting scholarships, etc) and how important school was I would have put a lot more effort in.

I don't think you need killer marks to get into a good business program. I did grade 12 (chem, bio, physics, functions, religion, english, algebra), finished with an 84% average for those and that was good enough for any normal program save for engineering science, etc.
84 average, but its top 6 that got you in =p prob in the 85+ range then, right? :-0

I don't remember the specifics anymore, but I know I had an 84% average for university applications, needing functions, chem, bio, physics, and english to be in there.
But the main opinion that I'd like to get across is that I think one should be able to get into any reasonable program at a good university of his/her choice with a low-mid 80s. And should be able to get into any reasonable program at maybe not their preferred university with a mid to high 70s. In my year 2004 - those were acceptable marks for engineering, business, and science.

Lol totally opposite experience here. I took that and did miserably along with more than half the class. This was because our teacher Ms Silverberg was a damn hard marker and bitach.
This was at Northview Heights. Worst class ever...you were guareenteed to get low marks...
wow totally opposite views...personally I'm not leaning towards anthro. If I had the choice I would take neither but I need a group 3 credit to graduate, so did anyone tryout Parenting, Media Studies, Physical Geography, how easy was it? Is it possible to just half ass?

Just a thought.. If you don’t plan to be good at ANYTHING ELSE (Science/Math/Business/etc.) but ENGLISH.. What good is English in journalism if you do not have anything to write about? Do you plan to be one of those brainless journalist that put up rumors like "TTC will go on strike this Monday AGAIN" (anybody remember that?).. When Monday hit, they put up another article that slap themselves on the face saying how it is interesting that even rumors made it to the news.. Not one word of apology for the false information, pulse24 even put that disgrace article on TOP STORY HIGHLIGHT, IT IS NOT EVEN NEWS... For a moment there, I thought Pulse24 are now run by monkeys.. Half of the news you see out there are put out by those brainless journalists who are no expert at anything but BS.. Where are their dignities???

hey =). just graduated gr12 this year and heading to uoft in september. anyway for me, in gr11 i did macbeth, the glass menagerie, to kill a mockingbird and death of a salesman. hope it helps =). anyway for grade 11, taking intl business is good. i did the same thing in gr11 and best move on my part. got an amazing mark and boosted my avg for scholarships. secondly, by taking the gr12 course in gr11, you can take one less course in gr12.
for gr11 uni math (f&r) it was the worse math course ever. fight through it and survive. it was the hardest math course during high school because of the pace (at my school at least) and some of the material was brand new.
for me gr11 marks played a big role too...dont throw them away thinking that unis wont look at them. they are the deciding factors for some scholarships and early acceptance. if you dont mind buckling down for gr11, you can get early acceptance and then slack for the rest of the gr12 year. happened with alot of my friends. after getting low 90% avgs in gr11 and getting early acceptance, alot of them slacked, as long as they were above the 60-90% avgs their unis wanted. same goes for scholarships though. based on gr11 avg i got $5000 from uoft (considering i got the scholarship info with early acceptance). hope it helps =). pm me if you need anymore info.. good luck =)!

Possibly... if you gave it 100% effort and achieved a 60% mark, then a tutor would help. But if you just slacked off, then now is the time to turn it up.

Sports journalism. For Toronto sports teams...
It's not that I don't plan to be good at those courses, it's just that I didn't try in grade 9/10. I said I will try in grade 11/12 courses, but I was wondering if universities look at those marks (math/science) to get into a course that relies heavily on English.

My apologize if that offense you in anyway, it was not meant to be direct at you..
With that aside, I suppose they do not particularly look at your math or science mark when you try to enroll into something that is just pure writing.. That is not to say you dont have to improve those marks because you DO NEED a high average to get in Universities nonetheless.. In most programs, I am not particularly certain about journalism, but most programs required you to get at least 80+ in BOTH math and English.. It's pretty much saying, what good is English if you have no "logic"
Another thing, I highly doubt that you get to be a sport journalist when you first start out.. You would need to work your way up (in most cases, unless you have got connections)

I'm going to be Grade 12 this school year so I'll tell you how my GR 11 went. The only problem I had during GR 11 was Math F&R. I received a final mark of 65%, my lowest. My other marks were ranging from low 80's (give or take a 70+) to low 90's. I took Physics, Chem, Computer Sci, French, Eng, Math F+R and World History in FRENCH(mmm, french immersion). Sciences are important too! Chem was easy for me but there is alot of memorization invovled. As for Bio, I heard that there are tons of material for it. Physics was like math, I was happy with my 70% but I could have done better.
Don't stress out too much. Just take it a day at a time. My school isn't semestered and our schedule works as having a Day 1 and Day 2 so that's how I took it. NEVER slack on homework, especially math. It gets boring and repetitive. You don't have to do it all if you don't want to but the more, the merrier. It will help you along the way. Sometimes, when I get a few pages, I just do ALTERNATE. Example : page 300 #1-5, I would do 1 a-c-e-g etc.
GR 12 here I come, with 2 maths, 2 scis, 2 lang (eng, fr) and a comp sci.
(Yeah, I'm pretty sure my post^ didn't do you any good.)

what you have to worry about is that if you are going in to university(U or M) lever courses then there wont be many hot chicks to look at when you are bored because most of them go for college level stuff.
on a lil more serious note for math listen to the teacher, for science just read the book and when you get stuck then ask the teacher otherwise dont bother lisnin to the teacher and for english and french just get used how the teacher teaches and then you will figure out how to butter em um and get good grade. as for universities as long as you wanna go into canadian univ then your grade 11 marks dont count that much just get above 75 which isnt that hard.

Well you don't have to worry about grade 11. Just do well, have some fun, what u don't want is for you to burn out when u r in grade 12. Cuz when u fack up grade 11 u can do better in grade 12. But if u burn out in grade 12 u r facked.
And going to class and listening is up to you. I personally go to school for the friends, not to learn. Everything u need to know is what are the homework pages, if u don't know how to complete the homework, read up on the text (that is what they are for), if you still don't understand, ask the teacher (that is their job).
Make sure u know what is going to be tested, and if u can, get your hands on last years tests.
And remember, getting into University is EASY... it is getting out with a degree, that is hard
I personally didn't do well in grade 9~12... but Kicked ass in OAC. I guess you just gotta know what you want.
If it helps I'm going to be in my 4th year at Queen's studying Chem Eng, 1st honours student. Don't waste your energy in HS, enjoy yourself, when will u ever be young again?

For Grade 10 Academic Math I got 62% before exams and then 56% after exams. I'm going to be taking Functions for Grade 11 (not Functions & Relations), so how worried should I be about Math?
For Grade 10 Academic English I got 80% after exams. I'm going to be taking Enriched English in Grade 11. Should I be taking it? I don't think universities care if you were in Enriched or not, as long as you get a good mark right?
What i wanted to do was either a Psychology major, Print Journalism or something in film.
Also, I was thinking about tossing Economics for Chem...good idea? I'm only taking Bio at the moment, no Physics cause I hate the math.
Do I need Chem for Psychology? I'M FREAKED OUTTT!!!!

Some physchology is based on neurochemistry...ie hormonal imbalances, etc. But bio has you covered. Chem does have alot of math in it, not as much as physics but there's math. But it's mainly calculatory based, you have just to understand the process involved to solve each problem. I think you gotta try alot harder in Math...
Look at most university calendars, see what they say is required for phsych. I think economics is probably better, since you probably learn about consumer spending habits, etc.

this does work, the whole science studying thing IF you are that type of a learner. i know i could've skipped alot of classes and learned the material better on my own for alot of my classes. you can try asking to take courses on independent study as well, i took individuals & families independently in grade12. secondly, grade 11 marks dont really count if you do well in gr12. but still..you might as well focus in gr11 get high marks, get early acceptance then slack in gr12 (within the acceptance conditions) so you can enjoy your last year of high school with prom, grad, etc.

Yes you do.
Your math mark (60s) is pretty much what youll get in senior maths. Theres 3 of these senior maths, and lots of good fields use 2 of 3 of these.
I can also vouch for this
I had a 90 in grade 9, 90 in grade 10, 86 in grade 11, 76 in calculus
Trend was basically the same for all my friends, marks tended to go down as you went along or stayed the same, rarely did peple increase

wellll not always true. it depends on if you're trying harder or not trying harder etc. my math marks were like gr9 87, gr10 93, gr11, 82 (because of the stupid exam) and now going into gr 12. Personally i thought that grade 10 math was easier than gr 9. Anyways...
Grade 11 isn't bad at all. At the beginning it might be a little difficult because of seperate sciences and the new math but you will get used to it. If you do bad at the beginning of the yr, alarms will start going off telling you that you need to turn up that studying notch and adapt to the new yr.
I like to think that every year is just a matter of adapting to a new challenge :cheesygri

Yep, but formatting is the drawback. My teacher last year, she would take marks off your underline didn't show, or you didn't underline, trivial stuff like that...that's where alot of the marks come from.
