Okay, I know Tokyo is expensive but being the RFD'er I am I need to look for a deal. I said deal and not a cheap dump. I'm willing to pay if its a nice place. The places I've seen so far is $100-120/night at Crowne Plaza Metropolitan-Tokyo but the rooms are tight. There are other similar hotels in Shinjuku for $100-$140 night.

I'm hoping to find a nice hotel or rental apt for $100-$150/night with a full bathroom, comfy size room and good location to stations.

Try this one

Doesnt' seem to be very well know yet, but is brand new and has gotten good reviews. Located right next to or I think even in the same complex as The Conrad and Park Hotel Tokyo, two of Tokyo's best.

I too was looking for a good deal with decent size room, chose this one for the price and it has a Queen size bed.

Try going here, it has rooms for the Shinjuku area:

http://asiarooms.com/japan/tokyo/shinjuku-area.html

That site has the cheapest prices I found for hotel rooms for Asia. When I went last year I booked my hotel rooms for Japan and Hong Kong through here. I don't know how large the rooms are, we stayed at the Shinjuku Star and it was really small for the 3 of us.

My family - 2 adults, 2 kids - are going to be in Tokyo next year for a week, and wondered if anyone had a recommendation for a suitable accomodation? As the earlier person said, cheap is good, but we do realize it's Tokyo.

Also, in my initial research, I haven't seen similar policies to the big N. American hotels where kids stay free in their parents room - does anyone know if this holds true in Japan?

Welcome to RFD green blue

I suggest that you book 2 rooms for Tokyo. The rooms are quite small and there is no real point in finding a room to fit all 4 ppl in.

Thanks for the welcome, and 2 rooms certainly seems likely - any recommendations for any reasonably-priced, family-friendly hotels?

I stayed in the Crowne Plaza in Ikebukuro, it is decent, but like you said, it is hard to get to.

If you wree a real RFDer, you'd go for the 30$ hostel accomodations

depends, if you're travelling without family then definately go for the hostels.. i did this a while back and cant even imagine how boring it would be staying a hotel!

for the most part all the hostels i visited while in japan were really clean!

I will get back to this thread in November and report back to the hotel I'm staying at.

I've been to Japan many times and I've used Sakura House http://www.sakura-house.com/index.htm which is a housing agency many times.

They also run a hotel called Sakura House http://www.sakura-hotel.co.jp/index.html

This particular hotel is located in an excellent location and the rooms are geared towards the budget traveller. The accomodations are spartan like but clean and cheap.

You might also want to check out what Sakura House the housing agency offers in terms of 1 week accomodations in a rooming house etc.

They also run a hostel http://www.sakura-hostel.co.jp/

The staff is very friendly and English is spoken, among other languages.
