I'm a gamma but it really doesn't make a difference... its only for the races I believe..
and don't try to stick to just your group.. mingle with everyone else too!!!

Actually
you will be with your group most of the time during the first few days. IF you seperate from your group you're liable to lose them because every group does something else at a different time, so I wouldn't recommend it toooooo much.
You can mingle with other groups and I do infact recommend it, but it's usually more fun if you stick with your group. Many of my good friends today are the ones I was in a frosh group with first year :)
P.S. gamma rocks ;)

You can really interchange your FROSH groups they don't care. As for the evaluation, you should know your grade 12 material off by heart. The test doesn't "really" affect anything, but is noted on your transcript, so you probably want to do well. Materials covered include all grade 12 maths, and mostly physics. In addition there are some 1st year engineering included with topics such as Integration, Statics calculations (Force, equilibrium, Moments), and Dynamics calculations (Moment of inertia, General Kinematics, Angular Momentum and Impulse etc, all done within the 3 different frames of reference)
Don't overstress, but it is noted on your transcript, at least try to nail the grade 12 components, and as for the 1st year material, see if you can do some readings of the textbooks, and crunch a few basic formulas. When I did it, calculator (the basic sorts listed on UofT Eng site was permitted) and as far as I remember, no formulas were provided. Marks were awarded both steps + final answer as in high school.
It is absolutely mandatory to attend this by the way, the people who don't go to frosh make this evaluation up at a later date but because of the later time, the test is generally harder, so it is in your best interest to go to the FROSH one, else well, you take the harder one. Best of luck!
edit: Oh by the way, the scoring for the evaluation is similar to GPA using a point system, with anything above 85 being 4.0 . I'm not sure if this is true, but I have heard instances of people having "low" marks for PEY but they have taken this score into account and let him proceed, or vice versa (with moderate marks, but exceedingly low score on this evaluation). I believe PEY is the only thing which this evaluation "may" effect.

And it would also help if you learned how to integrate in high school...
I know some high schools like mine did while others didn't so you'd be better off reading the first 6 chapters of any Calculus textbook.
Good luck, and represent your high school!

meet lots of people, and don't stick to your group, just cuz you're assigned to a group doesn't mean a thing they don't take attendance or whatever; they don't care
just meet people in your group, once you've met a few, found out what faculty they're in, got a little friendly with them, go ahead and follow another group, meet more people, friends are very helpful in your first year, cuz it'll be tough adapting to the new style of schooling, you'll need friends to help each other out and get through first year

To the froshies... enjoy those few days while you can.
Oh, and yes, do study for the test that they give you at the beginning. They test for how well you try to understand and solve the problem. Obviously, you have to know some basics (well, all of the material from high school), but since you're in Engineering, they expect you know more. They don't expect you to do integration with several variables yet, but they'd like to see how you might go about solving such a problem.
Make sure you read each question carefully, and work diligently.
Good luck!

LAME FROSH!!!
LAME NAMES too.. like what happened to AlphaQ (I'll f**k you) and La Tour De PANTS, and other good ones?? LAME!!!
whoever come up with these lame frosh group names have no creativity.

Aug 15th, 2006, 10:08 AM
^ Wasn't AlphaQ a little chant/motto from Alpha group and not a group name? I thought FROSH always used greek alphabet/variables as names. Did you even GO to frosh?
edit: I remember in Sigma they had a pretty dorkified cheer. It was like "HEY SIGMA".. "Come get "sum"!". Haaaaa. Oh well all in good fun.

^ I remember going to those in my first year.. pretty garbage, although it is amusing seeing a lot of people go crazy and actually take notes in the orientation. I just remember them bashing and basically doing the pecking order of ENG SCI > EE/COMP > REST.. for the maths anyways. Good fun =).

hahha..we got emails from the engr ppl and it was in the first year book they sent us. no worries though, nothing much. they gave us the general exam scheds (may 11 for ES&P?) and took any questions. if you want to go to one it's still not to late. go register for tom night's.

WTF?!?
This is an actual test?? I thought it was one of those fun tests or something.. Considering it is in the middle of frosh week I assumed it would be more fun than hard...
Are there people who didn't know about this/simply didn't study and bombed the test in previous years?? I don't remember much from G. 12 Physics.. It was first semester last year :S:S

Do a quick brush up with your notes from high school =). Ideally you might wanna look into 1st year stuff a bit though.. but yes, some people have bombed it because they didn't know of it. The evaluation doesn't affect much though, but it is noted on your transcript (I think for PEY sometimes they consider it).

4th year chemmie, 3rd year of being a leader...
it's gonna be a fun time guys... shame most of you can't drink yet though. :D
the test is just an example of how bad the exams will be... just study hard, prepare and most of you will be OK.

Aug 24th, 2006, 10:50 AM
Yeah froshies advice: study well for the exam that you'll hear about, it's pretty significant, prepare lot's beforehand and you should be ok, don't forget to attend the prep class for it too. Don't forget to go early cause it will be ppaacked, and do stay cause usually they give out the most important hints at the end.

Its also a good idea to draw diagrams whenever they could be helpful - they'll make your answers clearer for the markers and help you figure out the question.

Well, essentially 1/3 of engscis either voluntarily switch out, are forced out to a different engineering, or fail.

Also one more thing, we have an Engineering dragonboat team and are having a successful summer, heading to our final regatta of the year at Ontario Place to defend our Education Cup title two weekends from now. Visit us at http://dragonboat.skule.ca . We will be looking for hard-working and eager rookies when tryouts start later this year or early next year.
Why am I telling you this now?
If you have no plans for the following summer, join our team! However, being named to next year's team will be very competitive and is recommended that you start increasing your fitness level before tryouts are officially underway. Plus, it's a crapload of fun to paddle and socialize with your teammates. I found my two years with the team more memorable than F!rosh.

very few people are forced out all together
most people switch out on their own accord :)

I didn't read the entire thread.
But here's a tip. JOIN DELTA because Delta frosh group has the ””” sorority to back them up in any race.
Last year there was a fundraising competition, and ””” cheerleaders helped the Delta frosh. Plus Delta also has a wicked chant.
If you don't like Delta, just join the group with the most energetic leaders. Don't stray off by yourself, or you will lose your hardhat.

And about the High School Evaluation Testing during frosh week, you must go to the tutorials beforehand if you want to do well.
The test is important, for it determines your APS teams and tutorial diffculty. It also gives the profs a rough idea of where to start the course (because some years are stupider than others :( ).

It covers a wide range of stuff - its a good idea to go to the tutorial to see what would be covered.
Also, eng sci eh? I'll send you a PM about books :D
