Hey I'm thinking of going to York next year. I'm from Vancouver. I just read this on another website:

I went to law school at York, and knew some people that lived in those same apartments. They are nice enough, but the biggest problem is locale. The York campus is really in the middle of nowhere, and there's nothing around you can walk to outside of the campus shopping centre / food court. There's also not exactly a vibrant student life, especially at the graduate level. You can get a bus (20 mins) to the subway which will take you downtown, and that will cost you 2.75 a time (or less if you buy tokens in advance, or get a metropass at about $100/month).

Depending on how much time you feel like you have to be on campus, you may find that you want to get a place downtown in your 2nd year.

Is it true? Is York really in the middle of nowhere? I had originally considered getting a car but read that Toronto had good public transportation. Is a car necessary? I have heard the campus is in a sketchy area and I'd feel safer getting around in a car. I was considering the York apartments since I am a mature student, but I am not sure about spending upwards to $800.00/mth on rent and bills when I will be so busy with schoolwork, etc., I don't want to have to worry too much about other things. Anyone know if it's possible to get a dorm room in January?

I live in the apartments on Sentinel Rd. and don't find anything sketchy about it at all. There's students walking everywhere. The only people that are scared are those who are afraid of minorities.

OK, thanks, is there much of a lively student environment there? I read this and I'm a bit worried:

"Ninety per cent or more of the students in each college are commuter students, and the colleges provide a home for them -- as well as the college residence students -- during their university years. One or more of the student clubs and activities in each college are bound to appeal to students, and events are scheduled with commuter students in mind."

York even admits it on their website!

And about the apartment you're living in, is it owned by York U? How much do you pay in rent/month, may I ask? I am looking to start in January and would like to get a dorm room but I don't know if it's too late now. =S Plus, I don't know if it's such a great idea to be 24 and living in dorms with 18-20 year olds.

You're right that it's boring. If the structure of the course is the same as last year, you'll get a new prof for the winter semester (in my case, the new one was just as bad). Do you have Jenkins right now?

As for the material, there's good news and bad news. The good news is that you won't have to go to class (other than for tests and to hand in assignments) and you won't need the textbook. Also, the assignments are really easy and everybody talks about (read:gives away) the answers on WebCT.

As for the bad news, you've probably already seen the amount of slides covered. Again, if nothing's changed since last year, you'll have close to 500 slides to learn from for each term (so 500 for the Fall mid-term, 500 for the Fall final, hundreds for the Winter mid-term, hundreds for the Winter final). Roughly speaking, that is. It may be a bit more or less. So skimming through all that material and trying to find what's really important can be difficult, but it's do-able. I pulled off an A and so did many others.

My advice is to do really well on the assignments and try your best on the exams. The marks for the first test last year were so bad she ended up not counting that test at all. And all the tests were MC and short answer.

Yes there is a lively student environment here. Everyone here is super nice and gets along with everyone. Where did you hear about this being a "sketchy" area anyway? From the media? I find it absolutely absurd that people are afraid of this area mostly stemming from the fact that it is very multi-cultural.

I don't live in an apartment owned by York nor do I live with anyone. I'm paying on my own. It's never too late to get a dorm and get this age mentality out of your mindset because everyone gets along with everyone. You'd be surprised how many older people there are, well in their 50s too.

OK, that makes me feel better. I've just been reading a lot of York U vs ______ things and it's just got me worried. Will I be needing a car if I go to York? Apparently the York campus is in the middle of nowhere and an hour from downtown Toronto.

if ur talking about keele campus i find it no where near to be in the "middle of no where" depending how u feel about taking the bus.. having a car is of course convenient, i dont know if this would help but u can see for urself by going to google and look at the satellite images to see whats actually around you

What I used to do was go over each set of slides, decide what sounded important, and put it into point-form notes. So for every 500 slides or so, I'd have about 2 - 4 pages on Word. Much easier to handle and memorize.

But yeah, there's got to be a better way to teach that class.

so this may have come up already at some point but i did not see it so i thought i would throw out some ideas here. i wanna know what everyone thinks is:

the best place to eat on campus that doesn't cost too much money or is well worth the money being spent on it, maybe a secret hidden gem in one of the colleges. (lol i've had many hot dogs from the hot dog stand outside of CSE, which in my opinion is the best stand)

best place to study, where you can actually get a seat and it's quiet, unlike the scott library, which apparently now we have to be concerned about being sexually assaulted.

Best Pub/Bar on campus.

Best Coffee on campus. (i refuse to wait in that long line for some tim hortons when i'm sure there is something better somewhere else)

random topics now:

best place to catch a nap in between classes.
Best bathroom on campus. (i.e. best place to take a dump LOL)

also if anyone knows is there is an RBC bank machine on campus that would be helpful.

another thing i'm debating is which gym to join. i know Tait Mckenzie is the main one but i'm affiliated with Mclaughlin and we have our own gym in the college called Dynamacs. which one do you think or know for a fact is better?

again if these have been discussed, forgive me.

Best food for your buck is the Orange Snail Pub in Stong College. The Ab in Winters College isn't too bad either, but I've only eaten there while I was drunk so the tastes could've been magnified.

Best pub/bar would be the Ab in Winters, seeing as it's one of the few pubs left on campus. I've heard ok things about the Grad lounge in Ross.

I'm not a coffee drinker so I couldn't really tell you the best place for your caffeine fix, but if not Timmy Hoes then maybe Second Cup in York Lanes?

Room 111/JCR in Stong College is a pretty solid place to nap/study quietly.

Any 3rd floor of any college/building should be a pretty quiet place to take a dump.

RBC atm machines are all over campus now: Vanier, Stong, Tait, Will Small, Bennett Centre.

Lots of good info in this thread! Thanks a bunch for the good read!

I have a few quick questions...

Im a transfer student, and the stupid thing is that I was given my access to york u on like august 5th...By that time almost everything i wanted to get into was full! I am currently enrolled in 3 courses, does that count as full time? I'm planning to take another 3 over summer hopefully, and was wondering i anyone find it easier/harder. At UTSC i remember the profs that taught in summer were sometimes Laurier/waterloo/shulich profs - some were great, some were just straight up evil!

As far as I know, it's not the number of courses you're taking, but the number of credits you're taking.

According to this (http://sfs.yorku.ca/aid/osap/eligibility/index.htm), full time = 60% course load or 18 credits (18/30 = 60%).

Former York student that still lives in the village speaking:

Eat Good for Cheap - Falafel Hut
Study - Scott, 5th Floor booth
Pub - They all suck. Cock and Bull (now Bull) used to be good
Second Cup - York Lanes
Nap - Library Couches/College Common Room
Dump - Ross building upper floors
Bank - Just TD,BMO and Scotia to my knowledge and a credit Union machine
Gym - Tait is much better. It's cheap too. College gyms are crappy but low traffic.

ECON1010, the class average was in the 50s, so I consider myself lucky I got out of the class with a C+. The prof I had was known for making things unnecessarily hard it seems.

ECON1000, easy so far. I don't want to jinx it but I felt I killed the midterm.

The material for both courses are easy enough to understand. The midterm and the final consist of just MC questions.

Advice? The usual. Go to lectures and just study the textbook and do practice questions in the study guide. I was too cheap to buy the study guide when I took ECON1010; I have it for ECON1000 and it helps immensely.

LOL are you serious?

What do you study in ECON1010?

I am a prospective student and I've tried contacting the York Fine Arts Advising two times now, and both times I received the same form letters welcoming me to York Fine Arts from a certain Don Murdoch! I never got a reply for either of my questions.

When I emailed the main admissions people they were not able to answer even the simplest questions about the availability of certain courses, and directed me to the Arts Advising department instead.

This is making me worrym because how can a proper university be so poorly run?

Are you really a "prospective student" still? I mean, you aren't accepted at York? Because you say you received two letters welcoming you to York.

Like the poster wrote above, phone them to get answers. It's not hard. I bet the phone number is even on both of the letters you received.

Oh, and Admissions deals with admissions. If you want to know about specific courses, figure out which department you need to call, and then call it. Or, look it up online, under the Registrar's office course offerings page. If you found RFD, you can find the Registrar's website at York.

I am most definitely a prospective student still. I haven't made any formal application to any of York's programs yet.

Well, if it was as simple as picking up a phone and calling them I would have done so already! But e-mail is most people's preferred way of communication these days, so I shouldn't have to resort to calling them. I am in the UK right now and I'm very strapped for cash so I'd rather not spend money on long distance/Skype.

They should really fix things up on that front because it makes them look unprofessional and poorly organized, which may very well be the case. Sigh.

Heh - I just found out ECON1010 is an intro macroeconomics course. I already took that at Ryerson before transfering to York, and I got an A in it with very minimal effort.

No torrents are not banned. Bittorent is open but all student accounts are limited to 100kB/s.

TEL labs have unlimited speeds but you need to have an OCTES account. You will easily get speeds around 20MB/s if you download a Linux iso.

I hate it when people spread BS and say this and that is banned without any proof. Just because a friend of yours says so, it doesn't make it so. I have been at YorkU for over 3 years and i have yet to receive any sort of warning.

You are allowed to download as much as you want. There is no restriction of any sort. The only restriction is on download speed.

Hope this helps.

Be prepared for a major loss of money though!

I am an Econ Major, but having trouble with the math courses (have taken the 3rd year courses with no trouble). The problem is if I do not pass the math course (1530 & 1540) I can not take anything next year to finish up. I paid the deposit on the courses but can not afford the money loss if I can not do the courses so I just havent paid anything else yet. They have not "de-rolled" me, so after I write the mid-term I figured I'd pay up (assuming I am confident as I have been working my ass off at it )lol. I assume there will be some sort of interest payments or something.

Course is pretty hard for me, never took high school calc, or any grade 12 math courses. I graduated college 2 years ago and started university this summer, where in college I had one business mathematics course in 1st year which was a few years ago.

Maybe for a "mathmajor"... lol.

As my post above stated, not such an easy course for everyone who is not exactly to strong in math or for someone who has not taken a math course in years.
I would agree the 1st year econ courses are pretty easy (other than the math for myself, but that is just me). Econ 1000/1010 are pretty easy and questions come right out of the study guide and all multiple choice work. From what I have been told the intro. Micro/Macro courses at York use the same books and work that Western uses and some other schools while Ryerson uses a book similar to the books the colleges use and that intro to micro/macro is even easier at Ryerson than at York.. lol.
They have to bell curve the marks in our Labour Econ. course because of the average low marks, but that being said quite a few students are non-econ Majors (they are in HR or something) and do not even have Econ 1000.

It's probably just applied stuff since it's an econ math course, so you mostly do a lot of computation. It shouldn't be too hard once you get the hang of it - it will become second nature. Just do a lot of the exercises in the book - extra exercises on top of what your prof assigns too.

Practice makes perfect.

Yes, I park at the village, depending on the time you go will dictate how hard it is to find a parking spot. I believe a 2 hour limit??(correct me if I'm wrong) I've had my tires chalked before, so try to avoid spending an entire day there.

Anyway, it depends on what program you're applying to. York is at or near the top in programs like business (Shulich (sp?)), fine arts, kinesiology, language (glendon), liberal arts/social sciencey kinda stuff. If you ask people who go their you may get a bias opinion to. I do not believe York is a top quality place but it is not as bad as the wrap it gets either. Their Economics program is pretty decently rated as well.

According to the refund table here http://www.yorku.ca/sfs/refunds/tables/index.php?term=fw09&class=undergrad&section=general you would lose all the $$ and I don't know of anyway to reduce the amount although you could always go to student services and ask them if you have the time.

Guys I looked over the York website and it answers half of my question, so hoping someone can give me some accurate info. I’m thinking of dropping a course as it’s getting too time consuming and expecting our #2 child right now I don’t think I can handle the added stress. I know the deadline to drop has passed. It’s a Y term course, so a full year. It seems like if I drop it now I wont have it on my transcript but have I lost the entire $$ for this course? Is there ANY way to reduce the amount I have to pay?

Hi,

The only way to drop your course and still get a financial refund would be to file a petition. You have to state why you needed to drop the course and (if applicable) back up your claim with documentation.

Your petition gets reviewed by a committee and they decide whether or not to grant your request.

Usually there needs to be some kind of personal emergency (e.g. death of a close relative, medical problem, etc.)

Blame the weather though, they need to protect themselves from the cold. It opens up again when the snow melts and warm weather comes back lol, but they are not around in the exam time or after... leading me to believe a fair bit drop courses.

The late fee's on the course tuition I found out is 1% a month, I have only paid my deposit and the balance they charged me 1% which is not all that bad because if I pay in full and then drop it, I get nothing back. Always been a horrible math student and I bombed my midterm so I do not want to pay it out just incase.
Signed up for some more tutoring and hopefully will get through it (have always been a horrible math student), all my 3rd year courses I am getting good grades to...

I'm not sure what you are saying. I did not take all three 9 credit courses in 1 school year, I took them in 3 years.

I don't see how you can take a 9 credit course in only winter term, they are full year courses just like 6 credit courses. Unless I am misunderstanding something, I thought 3 credit courses can only be taken like that?

I did huma1200(9credit) in one term. It's not too bad imo as long as you keep up with the readings. It was a history of canada type of course and we had to read novels through out the course. I think there was around 7-10 novels of varying lengths that you had to read for course. I think it does depend on the course and prof.

Hopefully you have an idea. I'm in Marshal Walker's itec 1000 class and we had to do an assignment where we had to create little man computer program (2 of them). Anyway all was going well and I completed the 2 programs, then one of the things I'm supposed to hand in is the contents of the message box after the program is compiled and ran on the simulator. Problem is the second program creates a **** tonne of text and when I copied and pasted the contents it made my word file 50 goddamn pages long. I'm no genius but I sure as hell know he doesn't want us to hand in 50 pages and there is no way in hell I'm printing 50 pages. I emailed him an hour ago but he never answered a different email I sent before so I don't know what to do if he doesn't answer. I don't recall him giving a specific instruction.

Did you have to do this assignment? How did you hand it in...?

we had to do this assignment, but were required to do it by hand. We were not allowed to use a simulator.

but in any case, you shouldn't be getting a ton of text....that is not what the little man computer is supposed to do.....

maybe a copy/paste error?

On Oct. 21 at around 10:30 p.m., while in the Student Centre, I was robbed of both my laptop and my cell phone – while using them.

Now, I’m not a small guy – I’m six feet tall and over 200 pounds, and I was not alone at the time, either. There were probably 70 other people around me, chatting and eating and, still, I was targeted for robbery by young-looking criminals.

Considering that York is a low-security, high-profile environment where students tend to be distracted and forget about basic safety and security, it makes sense that we students are targeted.

And that’s exactly what happened to me. It was a coordinated effort by five or six young men, who, after taking my belongings, worked together to prevent me from retaliating. In hindsight, I recall, as I was working on my laptop, I was being watched and targeted by my assailants. A few thousand dollars later, coupled with the stress of replacing important data, I now feel unsafe and even paranoid at York.
