Welcome to the random thread of UBC. I didn't bother to do a search and stole (accidently!) the thunder from Stabilio7's original UBC thread (http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=324194) . MY BAD MY BAD!! Sorry! This thread is open to all discussion solely and remotely related to anything with regards to the University of British Columbia. (No, SFU ppl are NOT welcome! Kidding, we love you yuppies too!).
BTW, I am a 4th year econ undergrad. Enjoy.
For you 1st years, don't forget to check out http://www.saveonbook.com/ to buy cheaper textbooks from other students.

First random question of the moment: Favourite/Recommended place to eat in UBC/UBC Village?
Second random question of the moment: Have you scammed multiple upasses from UBC before?
Third random question of the moment: Would/Do you drink Starbucks or Tim Horton's on campus? (Starbucks has the slight edge with multiple locations).
My reply?
Pi R Squared! Good but expensive pizza! But it sure beats paying $7 for Koya.
Yes, I actually gave my original UPass to my buddy and when I needed one, I had to get a replacement one for MYSELF.
Timmy Ho's double double all the way! Just hate the friggin 15min line up b/w classes!

2nd year arts here.
1) Believe it or not McDonalds, nothing beats coming back to campus at 3am drunk and grabbing some McDicks.
2) I've used other ppls before, never scammed a 2nd one though.
3) Timmy's, reminds me of home, and I hate Starbucks.

I graduated from UBC awhile back, but I returned to the campus yesterday because I was attending a wedding that was taking place nearby. Some big changes! Why did the change the bus loop? And a Shoppers Drug Mart? And no more Second Cup? What happened to Benny's Bagels?
Where is the Tim Hortons in UBC? I saw the Starbucks.
First random question of the moment: Favourite/Recommended place to eat in UBC/UBC Village?
The pizza place and Blue Chip Cookies.
Second random question of the moment: Have you scammed multiple upasses from UBC before?
I graduated before the existence of Upasses (boo!).
Third random question of the moment: Would/Do you drink Starbucks or Tim Horton's on campus? (Starbucks has the slight edge with multiple locations).
There's more than one Starbucks?

yup 3 ur 4 i think, plus some of the freaking buildings have shops that are "authorized Starbucks brewers" or something, run by UBC food services, who sell Starbucks coffee at the same ripoff prices.

They had to change the bus loop to apparently start construction on the 'underground' bus loop. But they haven't started crap b/c the campus folks didn't like the cost, emissions, and ensuring involved. I believe they are revising the underground plans to be less grand or just moving to a ground-level bus loop.
Second cup closed down right when the new starbucks opened up.
Tim Horton's is located beside 99 chairs.
And shopper's just open earlier this year (i think).
Things have changed a lot these years... even in the short duration of my undergrad.

They are building a new bus loop under where the old bus loop used to be. I don't think they are in any hurry though as they are raking money in having converted the old bus loop into a parking lot. They held a design competition for re-designing University Boulevard and the winners have been chosen. Design details can be found here: http://www.universitytown.ubc.ca/archcomp/exhibit_poll/teamA.php
The new Strangway building (yes, that David Strangway) has some commercial property on the bottom level. Next to the Shoppers is a Cafe Crepe, next to that is Coffee Shop and next to that is a new pub called Mahoney's (food isn't too bad but takes a little longer than other places, drinks are more expensive here but their intention is not to attract the students). The Coffee Shop at Strangway (Boulevard Roasting Co. I believe) apparently won out on a heavily contested bidding war that involved Starbucks and Blenz to get that coveted spot but was given to Boulevard for its support of student artwork (there is a current call for volunteer artwork to be displayed) and being different from the other coffee chains. I believe the owners are UBC graduates if I recall correctly.
Second Cup lost its lease at the Village (some rumors of contention going between the owners and Second Cup and the property owners). It's now a Blenz which I say is better but too bad.
Benny's Bagels shut down awhile back (I think in the Fall?). I'm not sure what is there now (last time I went it was nothing).
As for the questions posted by mwong:
1) Depends what you like. I personally think Osaka Sushi has the most kick ass dynamite roll on campus simply because the tempura is still tempura after awhile and doesn't get soggy. A Ramen place/restaurant (not food court offering) needs to open there so badly. The hottest and newest restaurant in the food court right now is Donair town (cheap, huge portions and delicious. Plus, it's cheaper than Snack Attack).
2) Nope.
3) Depends on the Starbucks. The new one at the Engineering building is run by Food Services and when you say "extra caramel" it's in fact - too much caramel. The regular Starbucks actually take Starbucks cards which is definitely a bonus.
Tim Horton's is so so but it's run by food services in the former Trekkers and as such there's always a line up all the way to the door (despite the winding line-up) and it's plagued with situations like 1 till going while the other food services ladies are nowhere to be found or chatting in the back at 8:30am in the morning.
It sucks that they are only offering baked goods, etc. because really, they should be running a full Tim Horton's in there with the room they have. I was disappointed with the fact that there was not going to be warm Tim Horton's Chili on those cold winter days :(
