View Full Version : How long after a job interview before you officially say "ok I'm not getting this job

There was an internal job posting at my work which I applied for. One of the hiring managers sent me a email this Tuesday to setup an interview later on that day. His overall impression was good. He said he'd like to hire internally and he wants to give me a chance. He also said that there were 2 other people they were looking at outside the company.

It's now Friday and I haven't heard anything. How long before I officially think to myself that I'm not getting the position?

Email or call the hiring manager/respective hr person and ask. There's no reason to sit around and wonder because it's not like they won't tell you when you ask them.

Why are you still posting here and not calling them to ask?

I feel weird calling to ask.

Nah, I just thought it was overly harsh. You think saying "No offense, but you're an idiot for sitting around pondering about it instead of emailing the manager to find out" is bannable?

depends on how urgent they need the position filled. usually a couple of days, but sometimes certain jobs can take even a week or two.

Don't know about you, but I can usually tell if I'll be invited for 2nd interview during the 1st interview ;)

And if you get to 2nd interview, usually the job is yours to lose.

Right after the interview, tell yourself that you are not getting it. When you are rejected, you won't feel so bad because you expected the worst.

Well, there have been moments when I realized in the interview they would not be calling...

But that was back in high school.

Trust your gut instinct, if you though it went well, they will probably consider you for this position now or in the future.

I remember once in HS, I was applying for a job as a assistant clerk @ my physiotherapy clinic.

My interview was at 7:30am, my interviewer was in such a bad mood. Its like no question I answered was making an impression, I ended up going to school that day dead certain I was not going to get the job.

and I found out later that her mom had just passed away, she was also going thru a divorce.. so. sometimes its just a no-win scenario :)

Tuesday - your interview
Wed. - external #1 interview
Thurs. - break OR external #2 interview
Fri - break OR external #2 interview
Weekend - to decide
Monday - confirm with them.

You must relax. There are two others that must be interviewed. Give the employer the weekend as he/she could be interviewing one person per day, depending on the type of employment.

Interesting thread.

I had a interview one time where I knew that I wasn't going to get the job within the first 10 minutes. I had trouble answering their questions within the first 10 min . They asked very specific stuff with computers that i wasn't sure about. I got stuck within the first 10 minutes....The interview went on for 30 minutes though, i screwed up horribly. I was just waiting for them to end the interview A.S.A.P. :D

It also depends on how far into the interview process you are. If it's your very first interview, then longer, but if you're say on your 2nd interview, 1 week is probably a definate no. If it's a third interview, 1-2 days max.

The next time u interview, maybe you should ask how long the process will take. In my experience, I've waited anywhere from 1 day to 5 weeks to get a reply, although I really wasn't "waiting" as i found out how long it would take them to decide.

And as an aside, a long wait doesnt mean you didnt get it. The interview where i waited 5 weeks ended up giving me job offer for a "higher" position than I'm qualified (on paper) for.

I got a call about 3 months later, but I couldn't take it because in that time I already was working somewhere else.

It takes some time, try not to think of it and eventually you'll hear something.

I guess I'm in a worse situation than the OP. I had my 2nd interview on July 24th and they told me they'll have a decision by the end of that week or early the following week. Now it's 1.5 weeks later and I still have no answer. I'm going to call them on Monday or Tuesday just to get an official reject from them. To the OP I would say give them a week or so till you try to contact them. Usually it takes a while for them to get to you.

Unfortunately, you probably didn't get it then ... keep your head up high and keep moving along. Good luck.

I had an interview on July 10th, they told me someone will call me to have another phone interview. No news since then.

I'm expecting a notice even I didn't get the job. I called back and the HR manager never answer and her voice message says she is away on July 31th...

I just want an answer, yes/no.... :-0

HR likes to play that game. They either do not answer their phones, or do not answer their voice messages. The same is happening to me, and I can't let it bother me any further. I need to move on and find something, instead of dwelling on the past... even though I have grown terribly annoyed at this job hunting.

Is not a small firm, but a international coporation. I hear that those corp.'s HR dept will send a notice to the applicant even it's a good news or bad news.

Fido Microcell did send me a notice when they decide not to fire me.

The company I dealt with was FedEx. Surely they should have sent me something within a month of interviewing me a second time.

I need to network more. I should have kept contacts with my customers when I was still in retail.

i've had some idiots practically promise me the job, and just never call or say anything and then ignore emails

another interesting scenario is the over-qualified situation. the job was non-IT, and I came in and owned all the IT staff +manager in the interview, because they had some issues in the office currently and i resolved them while they couldn't. again i was lead to believe i'd have the job, and i was a perfect match for the non-IT position, nada

lots of politics and **** with interviews. remember also that race plays a huge factor(some companies prefer minorities to fit the statue quo and others are the opposite), etc..

So, really the callback time is completely random, could be months even, and all HR are bitches/jerks.

They can and will replace you in line with anyone they want right up until the last second, or simply balk and start the process over.

Never assume that you've gotten any job. This relieves you of any hopes that can come crashing down and also keeps you looking for other jobs. Just apply, interview and then apply to the next one. As already shown in this thread, there are a thousand responses and a thousand situations you can be in so just always assume that you didn't get the job and move on.

Like some of the others have mentioned I am getting pissed at how long it takes them to make one simple phone call. I would like to get the no too. It's not like I can't take it since I've been getting it left and right these days but it's just rude to let people hanging like that.

So it's been over a week. I send the guy an email just for a follow up. Simply asking if they've found the right candidate to fill the position. This is the response I get.

I will be out of the office starting 08/14/2006 and will not return until 08/21/2006.
