i like the beach in Port Elgin, much quieter, good for families. If you want a younger crowd, I'd choose Sauble. Not crazy about Wasaga personally...

We just went to Sandbanks last weekend. About 2h East on the 401 from Toronto but the beach is awesome. I'm not a Wasaga fan either but Sandbanks is worth the drive. They have huge waves which make the swimming alot of fun. Highly recommended.

Milton has a man made water reservation place that is quite popular if you are in the GTA and don't mind some mullets.

Sibbald Point, about 1 hour north of Toronto

Simcoe has half-decent beaches at Sibbald Point, Barrie, Jackson Point, Beaverton (very shallow bay, best for kids). Orillia is 1.5 hrs. but Lake Couchiching (sp.?) is much cleaner than Simcoe.

A little over 1 hour but Midland has the best beach in Ontario, IMHO. They are public but mostly used by the locals who have cottages or houses there. The place I visited was late Harold Ballard's cottage on the beach...I don't remember exactly where it was in Midland...but the beach was breath takingly clean with white sand and no crowds.

So if you find the Ballard's cottage...you have found the beach.

wasaga's too dirty!

i'd suggest sibbald point as well - it's an hr away and really nice.

sandbanks, grand bend and sauble are good too if you're willing to drive that far.

Thunder Beach (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=thunder+beach,+ontario&ie=UTF8&z=13&ll=44.813628,-80.047588&spn=0.10826,0.271912&om=1&iwloc=A) in Tiny Township (my mother lives there). But if you're not a resident make sure you park 1Km. away from the beach - there's plenty of signs to warn you - or else the municipality will ticket your car.

I work at Awenda PP (about 2hr. away from Toronto; 15min. from Thunder Beach) that has four seperate beaches plus you get access to the NHE programs, trails, and picnic areas. $9.91 after taxes for a day pass.
