Shaw, Telus, and Rogers should all have student deals for 8months at about half off.
edit: I'm using Shaw, search the Hot Deals section of this forum for the details.

Cogeco seems to have inverse deals - cheap student cable/internet only for the summer.
4 months of 10Mbps internet and full analogue cable for $10/month is nice, and cheaper than reconnection fees even if you arent around in the summer.
Something to be aware of if those other companies dont service your area or if you dont like their packages.

Just walk into any Futureshop and ask for the free 3 months trial of Rogers Highspeed Express or Bell Sympatico Highspeed. Use one and then the other next term.

if yyou have a wireless card.. just tell it to search.. it'll eventaully find someone around you that has internet.. and most people don't bother putting extra security on their routers... so you just click connect and VOILA you're "borrowing" wifi

haha "borrow"...
This doesnt always work, around where I live in waterloo there are alot of techies who make sure they have secure wifi, but you can catch one if your lucky...
I got 3 months free bell HS and I am only in school for 4 months before I move elsewhere for coop, so thats my sweet deal, got it thanks to some RFDers but I am pretty sure the deal is dead now...you would have to search for it.
Might not be worth it tho, all the big names have their big students plans out at the end of august.

What do you mean student deal? So you phone them up and tell them your student id and school and you'll get a discount? What if my parent is the account holder of the service (high speed, tv, phone)? Will that work as well?

I have friends in Hamilton, if you are up the mountain, http://www.mountaincable.net/index.php?internet , otherwise, www.cogeco.ca is preferred.
This is just what I've been told :D
But I have cogeco here in windsor, and their standard internet (now at 10Mbps) is awsome. 16Mbit is also available if you need more speed lol

I actually JUST got off the phone with Bell and the rep told me the student internet promotion launched today.
It's basically the high speed package at $32.85/month instead of the regular price of $46.95/month with no contract obligation in the 8 months at school. You save about $112.80 then.

Would having cable modem be a bad idea if I'm living off-campus (few mins away from school)? Since majority of the housing near school is filled w/ students, I'm guessing alot of them will have Cogeco as their ISP.

YES!
Excellent Deal!
I just did that today, because I refuse to support a ISP that caps bandwidth, and has also placed exsessive force into removing torrent systems from working. Also considering I have 4 others in my house, leaving 10.20 gigs each a month is less then what my University offers for internet access which is included with tuition.
There are other companies out there that operate on a no-contract mode, and with unlimited bandwidth, but they do come at a slightly higher cost, but are an alternative if you cannot get high speed via phone line, but can get cable or vise versa cable in your region but dont want to go with Bell or Rogers

I believe Bell also has a cap that is much less than rogers if im not mistaken

No, there's no bandwidth cap with Bell.

Do you know how much this would be if I do not have a phone subscription w/ Bell?

I'm not sure, but I think a lot of the ISP's bandwidth caps are soft. Cogeco has a 30 gig (I think) cap, but the only time that caused a problem is when we hit 180gigs, they suspended the account for 24hrs.
You might be better off with a company that has a soft cap rather than one that costs more with unlimited.

its for new connections only.. and is restricted to students who only need the connection for 8 months or less as far as I know

No, there's no bandwidth cap with Bell.
Sorry guys but I was mistaken. I've noticed that Bell has changed their policy and now their regular high speed does have a bandwidth cap, while the high speed ultra is unlimited. So keep in mind if you are going with the student deal that its for the capped version of their high speed service. I believe it is 60 gb limit.

This is true for users in Quebec. They do in fact have a 60GB cap on their High Speed service. However, as far as I know, unless they have very recently changed this, Ontario has no such cap on the High Speed package.

I just talked to a bell representative and they informed me that the cap was 30gb on the high speed service. High speed ultra is unlimited.

The best student deal I found was... sign up for 3months free of $100-200 gift card at futureshop.
3 months is no contract so if you go from rogers-->bell--> rogers I think you can even do the 8 months for free. I think new customer mean 90 days of no service and I'm sure most people have roommates nayways ;)
