First time uni-goer here...and the countdown to school is closing in.

Just wondering what everybody packs to get ready for their uni-experience.

List whatever you usually bring, whether it be big or small. Wouldn't wanna get to uni and realise I forgot to bring something important.

depending on the university you're go to, usually the rez welcome package (at least at uw) has a checklist provided.. what to bring and what NOT to bring :) you might also find this on their rez website..

I agree, dorm life is all about meeting new people and making friends. Try to attend all the student related events and parties, as well as focusing on your studies of course. :)

Sorry - but how can someone be smart enough to go to university if they don't even know what to pack.

14 pairs of underwear. So that you can go two weeks without doing laundry.

Because University is about convincing you that you know something, not about knowing something.

freshman 15? :)
i'd say a phone for your res, clothes, a fan (if there's no air-con in your res), and linens (for those toga parties) :)

a computer desk chair - the ones they give you in dorms are terribly uncomfortable
toilet paper - unless you don't mind wiping your bum with sandpaper
mini fridge - store lots of alcohol.. and food works too I guess
buy used text books when you can

Agreed. Especially if you live in residence. All the cafeterias are closed at night and you're left starving if you don't have snacks or instant noodles/tv dinners in your fridge.

Also don't forget to bring money. With money you can buy almost everything you forgot at home. :D

I've always lived in the suite style residences.

So we always bring:
- 30" TV
- PS2
- Karaoke machine
- alcohol
- a REAL Chinese Wok, with the adaptor for the curved bottom
- raw food: wings, steaks, shrimps, seafood, veggies, whole chicken/duck
- microwave, toaster, mini grilll
- As for the room, bring all those mentioned already.

We proably cooked more than studied these 4 years. Every dinner would be 4 of us suitemates (plus others) sitting at a table eating a traditional style Chinese dinner (rice and 5-6 dishes with soup). Thats one way to avoid gaining weight by eating nasty cafe food.

I dont think i can survive in traditional residence, eating the nasty cafe food, no AC, trapped in a little closet. Never done it, never will...

That's a great idea for anyone who has the ability to cook at school... they are very versatile. Deep fry, sautee, boil...

Beer Fridge with plenty of alcohol

No need for condoms, but morning after is important.

Bring furniture. Steal it from parents. You dont want to have to pay for your own.

Is theft in university really that frequent?

I was planning to bring my 26" LCD TV, a couple of $$ hi-end gadgets and a $900 chair. Bad idea?

i think that's a horrible idea...the last thing you want is to draw attention to yourself as the "rich" guy with tons of expensive stuff to steal. but then again, when i was living in rez it was usually laptops that were stolen since i'm sure it's not too convenient and easy to steal a 26' LCD TV.

I lived in residence (cafeteria), on campus townhouses(own food and services) and off campus. I'd have to say the mini fridge isn't really needed 100%. I only used it for first year a bit, mostly for beer. It is handy for those odd times though. Yes, bring lots of underwear and the laptop is ok but be careful during the times when everyone is really comfortable with leaving their doors unlocked. Thats when thieves come and steal stuff. Lock it on friday nights, regardless of where you are. Condoms were supplied by UVic so no need.

****MOST IMPORTANTLY****
TOOLS. Bring tools like hammers, screw drivers, etc. I was the only guy in a building of 50 who had any screwdrivers, nails, hammers etc. Super handy. You don't think of things now that you may have to fix or mount, but why pay for it when you can do it yourself and on the university's repair bill? Ductape is the best thing for those odd times you just have to have stuff taped to your wall.

Laptop is great but not necessary if you live far from home. I lived like an hour and a half from home so it was handy to bring my stuff home. Other than that, barely brought it to class
maybe 5 times.

Hope that helps.

Theft is pretty common in residence. TVs in the common areas get stolen. They chain or bolt them down sometimes.

Plan on people stealing your food, at the very least. Your own roommate may well do it.

Some people steal furniture from the residence buildings at the end of the year to take to wherever they're going to be living in 2nd year.

University is no longer a place solely for well-bred people.

Security over here has been pretty good (University of Waterloo, UW Place).

I did lose a bike outdoors, but indoors it isn't so bad.

I live on ground level and we never lock the screen door to our balcony. We have a electronic drumset, a mini stereo hi-fi system and all our food all unlocked. In addition, we never lock our rooms. Our windows are also on ground level.

But I guess don't push your luck :P
