Stay at a Hostel if you can.. the hosts are great, and they're all potheads. Theres a great coffee shop called 'Balou'. Its and Langestraat and Herenstraat. Sorry I cant be more specific I was there 6 years ago. Go in, talk to Igor and Julian the owners, they're crazy dutch shroomheads and they like canadians. And dont say 'Charlie'.. it has a squirrely type effect on them..

I recommend the Bulldog Hotel. Awesome place to stay on the edge of the Red Light District. The neighbouring Bulldog Cafe (or whatever it's called) is really loud though and not the best place to enjoy a mellow high.

The Flying Pig and Bulldog are Amsterdam's top 2 hostels and are ranked in the top 10 in the world so you'll have a good time.

Believe it or not, the best shopping in Amsterdam is in the airport (Schipol). The place is amazing. A mini-city. By and large, Amsterdam is not a shopping destination. However, for museums, it's second to maybe Paris.

Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House are not to be missed. Also, highly recommend a guided bike tour of the city. It's the only way to see it.

Only one? When I was there, they were refilling as fast as you could down them, I must have had about 7-8 freebies. It was only 10am, I stumbled out of there pretty loaded, but in Amsterdam, no one even notices.

If you have frequent flyer miles then you could stay at the Amsterdam Hilton. I'd check out the Rijksmuseum and Amsterdam's tiny but exquisite botanical garden. The greenhouses are exquisite. Maybe a canal boat tour of the city. Yes, it's a very touristy thing to do but you should try it once in your life.

Damrak (boulevard which goes from Central Railway Station to Old City and Red Light District) is pretty much filled with hostels. Not sure about quality and safety though.

The trendy place to shop, with neat little boutiques and artsy shops is called the negenstraatjes, or "nine streets". It's about two blocks from Anne Frank House just west of the Dam (center of town), and very easy to see on a map. It's a square of 3 X 3 streets.

There's a huge and great flea market at Waterlooplein, also in the middle of the city.

Heck, *everything* is in the middle of the city. ;)
