is there much of a difference in performance between the two? I plan on installing vista on it when vistas out.
also, is the core duo 1.83 gHz a lot faster than a 1.7 gHz P4?

Very little noticeable difference...i'd go for the 2ghz myself, but only if it wasn't substantially more cash.

I doubt it. How much more $ are we talking here...you left out that very important detail

I doubt there's much difference between the two, but if it's a reasonably priced upgrade, I'd go for the 2ghz one.
Also, in response to your other comment about the P4, there's no comparison.
2ghz Core Due >= 3.6ghz Pentium D.. roughly..

Well theres a $500 difference but the graphics card is intergrated on the 1.83 gHz vs. a 256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 on the 2.0 gHz

That's a big difference.. I guess it all comes down to if the graphics card is worth the cash to you. If you game a lot, I'd say go for it.. If you game only a little, you might consider seeing if you can upgrade the 1.83ghz one to have a better graphics card like an X1400. If you don't game at all, it's probably not worth it.

I do game a little and since this laptop is for university, theres bound to be a couple of lan parties. I'd be playing a bit of cs: source. also, i'd like to be able to run vista nicely so i'd need a seperaet video card anyways (be it 128 or 256 mb)

then the choice comes down to whether you have the $500 for that. Personally, I don't game, so I wouldn't pay the $500 more.

anyone know of a good laptop with the following specs
intel 1.83 gHz dual core
at least 1GB of RAM
at least 100GB HD
seperate video card
bluetooth is a nice touch :)
something nice and light if possible (5-6 lbs)
budgets about $1500

wouldn't it be better to be running vista with a laptop that has a seperate vid card as oppose to integrated?
