View Full Version : Help with a washing machine?

We have a washing machine that came with out house. It's a commercial style Maytag washer- the one you would put the coins in at a laundromat- but we use it for everyday washing in our house.
My GF put a simply humongous blanket in the washer, and it stopped mid cycle.. with half the water still in the machine. The blanket was wrapped around the agitator pretty firmly.. it took me about 10 minutes of pulling a nd prodding this heavy wet soaking blanket out. When I finally got it out, the washer started working again- seemingly picking up midcycle where it had shut off. So we put some clothes in instead of the blanekt, and it finished the cycle/wash as normal.
Problem is, now it won't work anymore. The power is on, everything LOOKS normal, but when you press the start switch to cue the washer to start filling with water, nothing happens.
Anyone ever have this problem with a washer?
Are they expensive to repair? Any difference with a Maytag brand for service or quality?

So let me understand...when the blanket was stuck, you pulled it out, mid cycle, and just dumped other clothes in there, and it continued to work normal. Then you added more clothes for another was right after and it wouldn't work?
Maybe the motor is just overheated. Leave it alone for a couple of hours, and try again.

Your washing machine came without a house? Houses don't normally come with washine machines. It's usually the other way around.
Seriously though, I think najibs may be right. Have you tried it again since? Have you checked the breaker?
You mention it's a Maytag so it's possible that the fuse in the washer is blown.
Check this LINK (http://www.repairclinic.com/0088_11_1.asp#Level1_11)
"If you have a MaytagŪ washer, is the fuse (if there is one) in the control panel at the lid-switch bracket blown?"

Also keep in mind that some materials should not be placed in the washing machine. For example, my parents run a laundromat and have signage that specifically says: "no horse blankets". (Don't ask what a horse blanket is, because I have no idea.) Anyways, low and behold a couple days ago, a machine 'broke down' because someone decided to wash one of these blankets.
From what I've been told, certain materials clog up [something], which then makes it impossible for the cycle to continue. This may be the case with the washing machine.

Chin Pang...
ha, that was a typo. The washer came with the house. Well, we actually added $200 for the pair (washer + dryer), but it was a good deal and we needed them. How do can you tell/know if the fuse is blown? There is still power in the machine. There is a small screen that is lit up $1.75 that is on all the time, so there is power through the machine still. It just won't turn on.
najibs...
Yeah.. the washer stopped working midcycle, while it was washing the blanket. It was wrapped really tight around the agitator, I think it got wound up tighter and tighter- it took me a long time to unwind it all from the washer to pull it out. After pulling the blanket out, there was only about half the water left (the blanket was sopping wet and took a bunch of water with it when we pulled it from the washer).. so the washer started to fill back up. We put clothes in the washer instead of putting the monster blanket back in.
sw1ft... I thought it was too big to put in myself. But we're in the process of moving in Sept, packing crap up and she wants to wash EVERYTHING so it's fresh when we move.
That sucks about your folks machine though. Some idiot just ignores the sign and breaks the machine. Any chance they got the ppl to pay for it?

Hard to say, there could be something wrong with the motor. If you don't think it's the fuse you can try unplugging it for a bit. This might reset the computer and allow you to start another cycle (If that was the problem).
Try not to put another blanket like this into the washer, it's not good for it. If you really need to wash a big blanket or sleeping bag, etc.. you should use a front loading washer instead.

I have a feeling it's something small, a relay/solenoid/switch somewhere. If the machine doesn't respond at all when you tell it to start, then theres probably no power even going to the motor, or whatever other perphetuals there are for moving the water and/or detergents in and out of the tub.
If you have a multimeter pull of the back panel and run a diagnostic. Start from where you have power, and work your way forward. Or where you Don't have power, and backwards. :)

Yeah, the exact same thing happen to my washer, and it also came with the house. Same situation, water begins to fill up and it doesn't finish the process. I couldn't figure out the solution, and figured if it were to get it fixed, the bills would prob add up to over 90 or so dollars easily.
So, I just got a used one. :|
