It could have been a doll, dressed up in fish scales.
Either way, that thing looks pretty nasty.

Its some really impressive Crypto-taxidermy, honestly! It is a pretty good deal considering how much time it would've taken to assemble and preserve..
google FeeJee Mermaid, you'll get a lot of hits.
One site in particular:

Check out the fine print:
The winner to this auction will recieve the sea creature shown in the photos below. The photos have not been altered or retouched nor are they result of photo shop. The entire body has been determined to be covered in once living fish skin with scales. I have drilled a small hole in the back of the head so that it can be hung up on a wall for display.
lmao!!

Seems legitimate. Looks like the winner got a good deal.

So fake..
Look at the tail part of the "mermaid" one side has a dorsal fin, and the other side doesn't. That part is just a dead fish on it's side.
Anyhow the thing looks like jar jar binks.

The bottom section looks a little real, but man the upper body and head looks so fake. Looks like it's made of plastic.

If it was a real mermaid, then this would be on the news............you know it, and it wouldn't be sold on an eBay auction.............more like a private auction.

Nice one...my buddy is a special effects makeup artist, I'll have to tell him about this as a way to make extra cash in his spare time. In the one pic showing the chest, you can clearly see the paper-mache type effect used, though.

Of course it's a hoax, but a museum bought it for amusement or advertising purposes.
