Below is the text that was submitted by a student as well as our report:

Many teenagers are going to work to help alleviate family expenses. Employers are divided in their opinions as to how to pay these teenagers. Some employers think that teenagers should be paid less than minimum wage, because they need additional supervision. Nevertheless, teenagers should be paid the minimum wage because they work just as hard as other employees, they need the money, and most importantly, they need to be treated fairly.

First of all teenagers work just as hard as other employees and, therefore, should be paid minimum wage. If teenagers are trained properly, they can produce as much or more than the next person. When I started my first job in a fast food restaurant, twenty-five years ago, I would open and close the business only after a couple of months of training. At first, I would open with supervision, and later on, I opened by myself. Being young helped me to move fast and accomplish many jobs that others dreaded. My sixteen year old friend, who was being trained for assistant manager, would empty the hot boiling deep fryers faster and more accurately than the older manager, who had been there for more than five years. Another friend, who was the head cashier, always came out even in her till at the end of the day while others never did. She later became the manager at the age of eighteen, Consequently, teenagers should be paid minimum wage because they work just as hard as adults.

Secondly, teenagers should be paid the minimum wage because they need the money too. Teenagers work because they need money for supplies, uniforms, and food. My friend’s mother, who was a single parent, could not afford to give her daughter money for school supplies; therefore, she had to find a part time job. Another friend, whose father did not make enough money to pay for school lunch for his eight children, went to work to buy food. In high school, I was chosen as a cheerleader and wanted to participate in this extra-curricular activity; however, the price of the uniforms was $700. As a result, my parents could not afford them, and therefore, I went to work. Teenagers need the money to live, just like anyone else. Thus, they should get paid the minimum wage too.

Finally, teenagers should get paid the minimum wage because they need to be treated fairly. Employers can take advantage of teenagers quite easily. If there is not a set wage, some employers can become abusive and pay teenagers much less than adults or nothing. In the Philippines, teenagers have no wage laws to protect them. Moreover, children work in sweatshops fifteen to twenty hours for only one dollar a day. Just a few days ago, I was talking with a young girl from Mexico. She was working here in the United States as a housekeeper. She was crying because she had not been paid for two weeks. She worked from six a.m. until past midnight. She worked more than eighteen hours a day and received only forty-five dollars a week. This situation is not fair. When teenagers work, they should be treated fairly. I do not think I would want to work if I were not treated fairly. For this reason, teenagers should get paid the minimum wage.

Therefore, we need to pay our teenagers at least the minimum wage. Since they work as hard as adults and need the money, too, they should be treated fairly. We need to show them that if we love, respect, and appreciate our teenagers, they can help to improve the world for everyone.

Looking at this essay, our proofreaders saw some good things and they saw some bad things.

The good points are:

Easy to read,

The author restates the argument frequently, emphasizing what he is trying to prove

The bad points are:

Many aspects of this argument are not considered, or if considered, and not elaborated on, or not looked at to their full extent. For example, the author did not look at the legality of paying teenagers below the minimum wage. The people who did not pay the girl from Mexico to do housework were not acting within the law. They did not have the right to withhold the girl’s pay; therefore, they were out of the scope of this argument. In the second paragraph, the author talks about teenagers needing money to purchase uniforms. How many students need to purchase uniforms? Further, the fact that parents are unable to pay for their children’s school supplies is an indication of poverty. Parents who were paid ten dollars an hour would still not be able to afford school supplies for their children.

The second problem is that the author constantly switches between the first person and the third person, and probably does not notice this pattern.

There are many stylistic problems, a lack of proper grammar, and a lack of transitions

There is poor word choice present in the essay

The formatting of this essay is unacceptable

The author did not give enough background information on the issue

The conclusion does not encompass the argument or the essay
After correcting the essay, we re-wrote it and formatted it in APA format. The total cost was $16.00 It was well worth it. When the author got it back, he worked our suggestions of considering the legality of the issue into the essay. In the end, his mark was an A-. Had he handed this essay in without our services, he would have received a C, because this essay is mediocre at best. Our proofreading allows us to look at your issue from a different angle and evaluate the argument on aspects that you fail to consider. This allows you to build a stronger argument, and get a better mark.
