Contact Lenses for someone with horrible sight

Remember once upona time there was a thread about eye glasses or something?
I mentioned my eyes are so bad that not only can I never get laser surgery, but no one even makes contact lenses for my prescription?

well..God Bless the soul of my life long eye doctor who informed me that they CAN be made..but not at normal prices..since only one or two manufacturers will delve in to the depths of -12.5 and bad astigmatism..

430 Dollars is what the quarterpounder has to pay for his lenses.. but God Bless Visa and benefits :D
so after desjardins sends me back 200..I should be ok.. but at least..for the first time in my life..I can visit sunglass hut..and actually be shoppin for myself!!

I too have poor eyesight and big-time astigmatism. My optometrist prescribed hard contact lenses which cost me about $450. They were painful to wear for a couple of weeks.

I as well have terrible eyesight. I have had contacts made, they are the strongest possible for soft lenses.

All of us blind guy should get to know each other a little better, Im sure we can learn a lot about different things....are you guys CNIB registered?

I'm not registered with the CNIB. What are the advantages?

I actually hate wearing my hard lenses. It gets very uncomfortable after wearing them for several hours. That's why I only wear them when I play sports.

I hear that..I still think my frames are gonna get more use than the lenses.. but the lenses will makea great diff when playing tennis..especially since I'll be able to wear shades..and look cool :)

they will also come in handy when shooting pool..there's nothing worse than trying to line up a shot...and then that annoying feeling that your glasses are crooked.. and frames wearers..I'll bet you can identify with this..but you can tell your own frames are crooked when no one else can...it really blows :D

-8 and -9 here.. can only see about 20cm in front of my face... actually I wear disposibles.. I rarely change them on a regular basis.. in fact the only reason I open up new ones is when I lose them. How do I lose them?

Well I remove the first contact and put it in the case. Then when I remove the second one I'm pretty much blind and sometimes don't get it in the case properly.. so it ends up ripped on the edge or lost completely :(

but my contacts are only $150. Rigid gas permeable (hard) lenses.

Well, since I cant drive and I am CNIB registered, my CNIB card helps me get around.

Here are some benefits, there are more, but its hard to find a comprehensive list:

-free yearly TTC pass for Toronto residents
-free ride on the majority of municipal transit systems
-2 for 1 GO/VIA/Greyhound/Canar/etc
-free admission for 2 to AGO, ROM, CNE
-free passes for 2 to Cineplex Odeon(this might have changed in the last year, I dont know since there isnt a CO near me anymore)
edit-just remembered-free Ontario sport fishing license

Edit2-forgot one big thing. The government has something called the ADP program. ADP stands for Assistive Devices Program. Anyway, depending on your needs, you can get free tech stuff. Every 5 years, you get a budget of about $11,000 to buy a computer system and software to help you. You can also get other equipment(I also have a CCTV to help with magnificaiton and reading). You are responsible for 25% of the computer cost in some cases and in others it is fully covered. You can either purchase the parts yourself and be reimbursed later or go to an authorized dealer and have them build it for you and take care of the paperwork(and pay them the 25% if necessary). I know 11k sounds like a lot but the software nixes at least 1/4 of that amount.
You have to be assessed before you can qualify. But there are no income restrictions, you can be a pauper or a millionaire and still qualify for ADP.

Those are what I can remember off the top of my head.

I know this is an old old topic, but did you guys ever become registered with CNIB? Are there any optometrists that volunteer for CNIB?

Let me know what you think of it, since I volunteer for the Waterloo division and soon Toronto division and might work a summer job there. It's an awesome organization :)
