Has anyone had any experience using that laptop bag? After reading some reviews a common complaint is that it is simply "too big".

Enclosure Colour ... Black

It would be nice if the USB hub is powered ... :( ... And the cable looks way way too short ...

It's likely there is a WD3200JB in there. The current OEM price is ~ C$118 (with 3 years warranty).

One thing I need to warn you ... The Hitachi/IBM 80GB HD that came with my Iomega external HD did NOT come with any Hitachi/IBM warranty (Only the 1 year from Iomega). Not sure this will apply to this 320GB model.

Just so you know ...

Jul 26th, 2006, 08:18 AM
It will most likely just be whats offered thru iomega. Even if you rip the drive out, the serial number on it will tell WD or whoever, that its only a 1year and thru which company. In this case, thru iomega.

Hmm ... I think we should assume the USB hub is not powered ...

Features

Bus powered
Compliant with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 standards
Connects up to 127 USB devices by cascading multiple USB hubs
High speed data transfer rate of up to 480 Mbits/sec
Small space saving design makes the unit easy to transport and use
Supports Plug & Play installation

Also the manual says ...

If you are powering the hub through the USB bus and are using several high-current devices, you may exceed the current limit. If the current limit is exceeded, the hub will disconnect power from the related port (the port’s LED will also go out). If you have exceeded the current limitation, plug in the hub’s optional power adapter.

I want to ask exactly the same thing, I have a device that only charge by USB. So, I want a USB hub that charge thru power plub so that I don't have to bring a laptop out everytime to charge my device.

Anybody knows if this work? Any other device out there that could do the job?

I mean included with the order, at the end of the order page GST and PST are shown. What I meant was that there will not be additional GST/PST when the package arrives.

From you question, it sounds as if you think this is coming from Dell USA.
This is Dell Canada so any orders placed at dell.ca and shipped within Canada will not incur any duties. As for PST/GST, you won't incurr any beyond what you are invoiced for, originally. So sub-total plus PST and GST (or HST depending on where you reside).

I hope that helps.

How useful is the mini numeric keypad?? What"normal" university applications would a student use it for??

In theory, any time you need to input numbers, you can take advantage of this - such as Matlab or Spice circuit simulation softwares.

However, "normal" university applications wouldn't fully take advantage of a dedicated numeric pad as much as an accountant software would. In university applications, there usually is a large amount of data entry as well as number entry, thus you'll be moving your hands off and on your keyboard frequently.

How useful is the mini numeric keypad?? What"normal" university applications would a student use it for??

Plenty! For example, my laptop does not have a kepad like this, and when I input numbers for my accounting ot financial applications I gain A LOT of time

When I ordered my backpack and mouse, etc it took like 1 day to come. Larger things like monitors, etc, are shipped from the states so they take longer.

I'm not sure what category external hard drives fall into though.

off-topic, but I didn't think Queen's had an undergraduate health sciences program.. Nursing? Life sciences, maybe?

I was going to point this out too. I think life sciences is what was meant... it's a HUGE program, IIRC the biggest in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences...

Wow,

I bought the 160GB Iomega back when Dell was having their Tuesday Business Deals. I got it for $100. It's an awesome drive. I just wish I waited for THIS one! It's true, RFD is draining my income. Great deal, recommended buy IF YOU NEED IT. Hahaha.

My Creative Muvo slim MP3 will NOT charge with my powered hub. Being a smart charge device it communicates with the USB port thus a simple powered USB hub doesn't work.
I want to ask exactly the same thing, I have a device that only charge by USB. So, I want a USB hub that charge thru power plub so that I don't have to bring a laptop out everytime to charge my device.

Anybody knows if this work? Any other device out there that could do the job?

I too like to know. I got the panasonic several weeks ago for $99 (reg $149) from FS. Features seems to be identical to the Sanyo. Personally I like Pany better.
Anyone ordered the cordless phone last time around? how's it compared to panasonics? Is this even a good deal compared to costco multi handsets?

The 250 was $149 for a while and there was a $15 off $150 coupon at the same time if you find something else to add to your cart.

http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=304842

But 320GB is definitely better for about the same price.

I almost bought that LaCie Porsche 250GB when it was $149 less $15 coupon at FS. However you had to add to your cart by 1 cent to get over $150 for the coupon but I couldn't find anything less than $5 and there wasn't much anything else I wanted. Delivery charge was $5, too.

So this Dell deal is even better when you factor in free shipping and $20 USD mail in rebate. Of course, we can argue about brands and build quality but I'm talking a spec to price ratio only :)

No duties, no taxes (they're included in the order).

I believe they ship via Fedex.

All the Dell orders i've ever gotten have been through Purolator. I cannot vouch for other parts of Canada though. That's only my assumption.

On Dell's last "days of deals" thing in June I ordered a UPS on the 13th and it was delivered by Purolator on the 14th. Last year I ordered another Iomega HD on one of these sales and it, too, was delivered the next day. I think 3rd party peripherals/accessories are delivered faster than Dell branded products. Maybe they're drop shipped? I dunno but it's fast and it's FREE :D

One thing I noticed is that online tracking is not always accurate.

And yes, weekdays delivery only.

I read through those reviews as well but it seemed that lot of them were referring to different Targus bags. I'm guessing that "Chicago" is the 15" and there are "Los Angeles" and other bags at different sizes that are also referred to in the reviews.

So if size is the issue you can't rely on the Amazon reviews completely...

The backpack doesn't look too good. It will depend on what you want to use it for.

It looks HUGE, but it cannot fit anything big in the bag because of how the compartments are split. It looks as if it will only carry thin notebooks and laptops, and accessories but will not fit regular stuff, like big books, large, lunch bags, bike helmets, clothes, RC cars, toys, gamecube, etc etc.

VivienM
Jul 26th, 2006, 01:50 PM
No, it's definately Health Sciences (http://meds.queensu.ca/). It's a "concurrent" program so she graduates with a degree and her Teachers papers...

That's the faculty, not the program.

You're thinking of the concurrent education program (you do an extra year, take education courses all the way through, and graduate with both your BAH/BSCH and your education degree) perhaps? I've had a few friends who did that...

I suspect you're actually talking about the life sciences concentration offered by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, because I don't think anything under Health Sciences can be combined with education?

It's almost like a tradition for Dell to carry an Iomega ext. harddrive every time there's a "days of sales" promotion, and just like tradition, they always sell out sooner or later.

I am assuming you are not working today as it's a Wednesday and the harddrive sold out around lunch time.

Hey, I went to Queen's for four years, so I do have some idea of how they run things over there :)

Your bank account will be drained more by residence fees than by tuition, though, in first year... at the time I was in residence (5 years ago now... I'm getting old), they were increasing those by about $500 each year. The new residences are more $$$, too, but apparently much better.

But hey, it's a good investment from a parent's point of view, I think. Best way to teach those kids to be independent...

I was thinking the same thing, especially now that you mention it is being done through concurrent education. I know many students have had problems with proper "teachables" if they are not doing the typically subjects taught in high school - even my friend in biochem found that biochem counted as neither bio nor chem at certain teacher colleges. Not sure what your teachables would be with "health sciences" unless you have many electives to pick from other faculties.

It really isn't a big deal.. it is just a name. I am just doubtful your daughter will be graduating with a bachelor of health sciences, BSc is more likely if it is indeed the life sciences program. Certain schools, however, separate the medical/life sciences from the health sciences and confer separate degrees (ie. at UWO). Off the top of my head, I know McMaster, Ottawa and Calgary also confer BHSc degrees for (non-professional) undergrad health science programs, and didn't think Queen's had such a program.

What's the difference between health sciences and life sciences, at the places that offer both as undergrad programs?

Be advised that the Iomega external harddrive seems to only have 8MB of cache - this should be sufficient for an external harddrive anyway. It is indeed 7200rpm according to the following page.

Success, Me and a buddy each got 1 for us and our brothers, so 4 total. $33.90 each + tax minus $50 online rebate = We got paid $11.69 to buy each backpack :P

They refused to give us the keypad. The other staples we tried were going to give both then the manager came up and said they didn't pricematch dell.

sounds like u went instore.

any1 try online ? :D

the thing is, Dell sort of has a "bundle" on sale... so perhaps this could be a reason why stooples refuses.

btw, not PMing Dell is not a valid excuse to reject a PM

Successfully PM'd 2 of them tonite at Staples price including tax is $38.64 each (will make $11.36 per backpack once rebate comes in)

Kids liked it so much they went and PM'd 2 more after I got home...the manager tried to refuse them saying they didn't pricematch Dell but they told her I was just there and had got it...so they were able to get it PM'd as well.

Wasn't too concerned about the USB keypad....already getting 4 backpacks for free and making $45.

I've always understood life sciences as being like... "the" thing for future doctors... more than anything else, but I could be wrong...

What's the difference between health sciences and life sciences, at the places that offer both as undergrad programs?

Hey there,

In general, health sciences are more of a social science type of degree, especially at UWO that confers BHSc, BSc AND BMSc degrees. BHSc may include courses in determinants of health, rural health, epidemiology, etc. BMSc (bachelor of medical sciences) includes everything that the typical life sciences degree includes - ie human-related sciences, microbiology, pharmacology, physiology, anatomy, etc - whereas the straight BSc degree is more related to biology, ecology, chemistry, etc.

I find that most "premed" students enjoy the science aspect, so indeed most are drawn to a life sciences or medical sciences type of degree.

LOL, I used to work at staples..... These kind of PM happened to me (before I knew of RDF and before I quit the job) If you came up to me with that, I would have substracted the 50$ easy rebate from the original price and then PM it.

You basically wouldn't have been able to pull that trick off me.

Those Sanyo phones look identical to the Uniden ones advertised tonight Wednesday at www.woot.com. They're selling 3 phones and an answering system for USD$69 (refurbished, 90 day warranty). Likely not practical unless you have an American friend.

I'm a UWO BHSc grad who went on to med school (now in residency). I was in the BHSc program fairly early on, and thus had a great deal of flexibility as the electives and what not were being created. I did it b/c I got the core science stuff that I needed and enjoyed, but also was permitted to really get into philosophy and sociology which are my true passions.

Would do it again in a heart beat.

Well, I order mine yesterday aft, and at a quarter of nine this AyEm, the big ol' white truck pulled into my driveway. :D

From reading the manual (yeah, I sometimes do that!) there's a conference mode where the two handsets are sharing the same line to the outside world... and there's also an ad-hoc-like mode (think PSP ;) ) where the two handsets can walkie-talkie away from the base station... anywhere they're in range of each other. Fun, huh?

I received confirmation email from Dell later yesterday afternoon (i.e. within 24 hours), although of all the times I've ordered from Dell, I think this is the first time I've ever received a confirmation email. The rest of the times they order just showed up at my front door the next day. I don't think you should be overly concerned.

I just called to separate the optical mouse, the external harddrive, and the backpack into 3 separate orders so they'll get shipped as they individually becomes available.

The lesson of the day is: place all "dell days of deals" orders in separate orders as you'll get free shipping anyway - this way if one of them is delayed, you still get the others ones.

What's sad about my story is, now both the mouse and the external harddrive has become out of stock, so at the most I'll get the targus backpack first and will have to wait for the other two.

Yeah, not the first time Dell has done this on a product I've ordered. When I asked the CSR about any compensation for the two delays, it was a quick "no, we don't do that" I asked how did they come up with the first date change (Aug 10), no good answer. Delaying over a month is just unreasonable in my opinion.

I agree, by the time the product has finally shipped, the price of the HD would have dropped and it would be no longer a good deal. I guess tomorrow I will cancel all my orders (as they are all supposed to be "in production" even though there's nothing to produce - it's not a Dell custom PC, after all), that is, I'll cancel the backpack, the mouse, and the external harddrive. Has anyone attempted to drill a lot of holes thru the aluminium housing to release the hot/warm air ?

Did anyone who bought the phones get hit with $15 shipping?

Have you CALLED Dell to ask them why you were charged? I mean, why worry about what others where billed. Just call and ask them. I'm sure someone in India is awake at this time of day :D

I wish they'd just put sold out instead of stringing you along.

Agreed. If they want to keep selling after the stock is depleted, that's fine... but there should be a message at checkout saying that the item is currently out of stock, but if you wish to purchase the item anyway, it will be shipped when stock becomes available. Then you can decide if you're willing to wait for it or not.

I plan to call. However, I'd just like to know before I call if this was an error or if it was on their web page and I missed it.

yep i am still waiting. i have a good mind to cancel the order now :P

oh and btw, these external HDD's are primarily meant for backup purposes, not for leaving on 24/7 downloading stuff onto it or playing games off it. don't be surprised if it runs hot while doing those things.

i won't cancel my order even though it is delayed because i don't need it immediatley and it's still a good deal. i would rather i get a fresh batch from iomega as opposed to one that was in a warehouse :)

No more waiting. The external HD arrived today.

After 2 weeks I'm still waiting. I think it's time to call in and cancel the whole thing since it's still "in production" and the whole waiting time is getting ridiculous.

And what do you know? I called 3 customer support representatives and all three of their computers went down while I was on the phone! I joked that maybe they shouldn't have placed so much faith in Dell computers (it doesn't make sense for them not to be using dell computers, after all).

One of them said that there was a fire and that's why the servers went down. I'm thinking, maybe Dell servers ran so hot that it started the fire.

I have another question. For those who received an invoice for either the HD or the Sanyo phones, did you get charged $15 shipping?

Thx

Nope

my account shows expected shipped date is July 31. now the status is still 'in production'.

is Dell just starting making steel in order to make the harddrive? gee... maybe i should expect to get my HD some time next year.

Actually if you called last night, the servers did go down for some upgrades. It wasn't the computers themselves that went down. There wasn't a fire lol.

btw guys it's a great deal - don't cancel unless u want to spend the money on another external HD today. u'll be hard pressed to find another drive with this capacity for that price to use as a trash drive :)

and just so you know, i work for Dell and EVEN I AM STILL WAITING ON THIS ORDER!!!

I called Friday for the HD and they told me it was really backordered and to expect my shipment in September. Boy, was I surprised when it showed up today!! YAY! So don't get discouraged, you should be getting yours soon! :cheesygri

I'll agree it's a good price, but personally I have no urgent need for another external harddrive storage - I've accumulated quite a few external harddrives through previous dell days of deals.

Furthermore, I now believe that had the order gone through, it would have become a sunk cost for me and would force me to justify purchasing of additional components just to make use of that harddrive (i.e. like a new computer).

I think i am the unlucky one for the HD... I ordered it and perhaps 5 mins after, it was marked as sold out. It was suppose to be shipped before or on July 31st as marked on the dell website in my account and what do you know ..i called in a couple of days afterwards and they say it is B/O until Sept 15 and I asked if there is any chances to received prior to that date and she said it is usually fairly accurate. It is a good thing i dont need it right away. I also mentioned that the MIR expires the September 4th 2006 and they said if I dont get it before then, that they will credit me the equivalent to the MIR. I guess that is a good thing but getting tired to wait.... :|

FYI just recieved a rejection notice on the rebate on the HD...

Looks like there is a confusion because rebate form says Dell S&P (which I think means Software & Peripherals). Reciept just says Dell.

rebate still available online here.

let me know if anyone else has this problem..
