View Full Version : Best Sci-fi Captain from TV?

(Inspired by the Star Trek XI thread, where C.O.M's question sparked a mini-debate on the various Enterprise captains...)
Who do YOU think is the best Captain or Commanding Officer (i.e. Commander) of all the science-fiction TV series' and miniseries'?
As I see it, your choices would be:
Star Treks
TOS - Captain James T. Kirk
TNG - Captain Jean-Luc Picard
DS9 - Commander/Captain Benjamin Sisko
VOY - Captain Kathryn Janeway
ENT - Captain Jonathan Archer
Battlestar Galactica (2003) - Commander Adama (Edward James Olmos)
Battlestar Galactica (original) - Commander Adama (Lorne Greene)
Babylon 5 - Captain John Sheridan (Bruce Boxleitner)
Babylon 5 - Commander Jeffrey Sinclair
Stargate SG-1 - "Jack" (MacGuyver :P )
My nerdy knowledge fizzles out around here, so I can't suggest any more...
Edit: Others' suggestions -
Firefly - Cpt. Malcolm Reynolds
Seaquest - Capt. Bridger (Roy Scheider)
Seaquest - Capt. Hudson (Michael Ironside)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My pick would be Commander Adama from Battlestar Galactica (2003).
Runner-up? Tie between Captain Sheridan of Babylon 5 and Captain Picard of TNG.
It's Picard....If I owned a Starship, he's the guy I'd hire.
Have to be Picard. He's the ideal version of what a starship captain should be.
Sisko comes close simply because of that ep where he turns the Romulans against the Dominion.
That would have to be Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly. Gotta respect a guy who kills for what he believes in. Makes the rest of 'em look like a bunch of sissies.
I think Zap was the best pantless captain.
I'll take Picard without a doubt. The best voice of any captain.
um Could we put Richard Dean Anderson as a captain or leader. :lol:
He's up there with Picard.
YES A VOTE FOR HIM TOO! He will always be in SG1, i hate the new guy from Farscape. The guy loses his job and takes over as leader is bad choice.
What, The Doctor doesn't count? He was the captain of the Tardis, no? :)
For my vote, I'd say Picard barely beats out Adama. You have to give Adama serious respect for keeping the last of the human race together, but how many times has Jean-Luc saved Earth?
can't imagine Jack O'Neil as a starship captain. I'm seeing lots of first contact mission going wrong because of his crappy jokes.
If there were a captain I would follow to the gates of hell and back, it would have to be Kirk.
Other captains/commanders not listed might be:
-Commander Adama as portrayed by Lorne Greene.
-Captain Buck Rogers
Ohh of a big ship IŽll say Adama. Or a little freighter definately Mal.
I guess you could also add Han Solo, Admiral Ackbar over to that list. IŽve been watch Space Above and Beyond so Commodore Ross would be a good choice too.
I totally forgot about Captain Power. I must have been 3-5 when it was showing reruns and I might still have the light up toy. I used to love that show as a kid. Thanks for the memories.
Here's my top 3. I might be biased right now, as I'm watching Babylon 5 for the first time right now.
1. Captain John Sheridan (Babylon 5)
3. Captain Malcolm Reynolds (Firefly)
2. Captain Benjamin Sisko (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine)
OMG, best music video i ever seen. very good!
anyway, me being a big Trekkies my vote is for Kirk ... he knew how to fight, he did not have to ask a walking computer for the answer to every problem.
I have to agree with you, season three being the best Sci Fi season ever ! This comming from a trekkie................ :D
1. William Adama - For having 'the look,' and being able to do a decent job saving the remnants of humanity.
2. Benjamin Sisko - For showing being the most human of all the Star Trek captains, and being able to realize that the ends often do justify the means.
If you watch 'In the Pale moonlight,' that's the best example. It's also one of the best performances by Avery Brooks.
In contrast, you have Super Archer and Super Janeway, that could do anything and always kick ass and finish things at the end of the episodes.
Not directly from the ST television shows but one of the book series:
Captain Mackenzie Calhoun - a blend of Kirk with Picard but a lot more Kirk.
Yeah I know what you mean. I find I'm watching two episodes in a single session. I'm on episode 12 of season 3 right now, and am quite engaged in the story. And it's nice to break away from Trek for a while.
When I did my B5 marathon, I'd sometimes watch 6-7 episodes per day. :eek:
if I remember right, season 3 is the end of the shadow war. season 1 and 2 are the slow buildup to the shadow war
season 4 is the earth civil war
don't remember much about season 5, it was kinda boring.
In the Star Trek Universe, the Federation named a medal after him. The Christopher Pike medal of courage.
I believe Sisko won The Christopher Pike Medal for his efforts during the Dominion War, in the episode "Take Me Out to the Holosuite".
