Saw an ad for worldline international (http://1011295.com/rates.html). All phone plans ( you know the monthly for one price type from Bell etc) charge a hidden "network connection" fee, around $5 mo. last time I paid one. I have been using YAK ( no contract or network charge either)for around .04 min which I thought was good until I saw this.

EDIT: Just noticed these conditions : Note - You must have a Bell Canada telephone line and reside in the province of Ontario or Quebec. Higher rates may apply to special country codes or mobile numbers and a $0.25 minimum charge applies per call. Touch tone service is also required, see Terms and Conditions for further details

So, if you dial 10 11 295
And then the phone no., you get a $5 network connection charge on your Bell bill at the end of the month?
That's bad. Don't think I wanna go with these guys in this case.

If you have a monthly plan with Bell you pay network charges. With no contract "prefix" companies like this one and YAK you dont pay this charge.

So if I understand you correctly, I just need to call Bell and cancel my long distance plan (ie. the 10cents, 5cents plan, which have a network fee charge to them). And then I just dial 10 11 295 + the long distance number for all long distance call and I will be charged 2cents/min?

I was told there are telephone card which have 200mins for 2 bucks for North American calling. Anyone ever use those?

Thanks for the find almostfreeman.

Cheers.

Yes, and be sure to check your bill to make sure they have cancelled it, Bell has a habit of ignoring service cancellation requests.

Oh, and don't ever forget to dial the prefix for LD calls or you will be billed Bell's regular rate without a plan. I forgot once and made a 10 min call from ON to BC and it cost me almost $10.

Just go to corner store and ask for phone card. Tonnes of different phone cards are available in $5, $10 and $20 face value. Usually you just pay 80%~90% face value and no tax. The rate can be as low as 1c/min for north america and different rate for international depending where you call.

The drawback is, sometimes the call qulity is not that good, sometimes the line is busy. Either case just hangup and call again.

Enjoy the low fare!

Hi coolcoolfi,

I am new to all of these. Can you explain how these phone cards work? Why would the call quality not be good?

Are you being connected elsewhere before you make the call to your desired destination?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hey EthanCote,

I use phone cards all the time to call Trinidad and the UK and I find the quality varies from day to day. Generally its pretty good, but i find when ur calling from cell phone to cell phone, it can get pretty staticky and noisy. I always go for the card which gives the most minutes for the cheapest price, and I don't really think that paying more for less minutes on a different card would increase ur call quality. Just be wary of connection fees (i always get the card with no connection fee, but thats my preference).

Btw, i use www.phonecardstore.ca to buy all my phonecards, its simple and lets u compare various cards on the spot before u buy them

Yak has been suiting me fine for awhile now, no special numbers to dial, no minimum charges, etc. Straight up 3.5 cents per minute for anywhere in Canada. My bills are about $2-3/month now.

Not for the service I have, I just dial straight. They have several options.

well, the 25cents minimum charge kind of kills this deal! I think there is one company that charges you 25 cents MAX per call (maybe WinTel??)...

Too bad they charge that fee $ 0.25 per call, so it really costs more per minute than actual advertised price.

If you talk for 10 minutes in Canada - that really means you pay $0.045 per minute NOT $0.02

So talk for 12.5 minutes. Wow, people really are cheap on this forum, hehe, complaining about 25 cents. *smirks*.

YAK is best under 6 minutes and Worldline is best for 7 minutes and over. Nuff said.

That's the idea of trying to save that 25 cents on each call - and if you are saying we are cheap, then why are you here  I assume also trying to save those few bucks...

Im not worried about 25 cents. :0) And if bell is charging $1 a minute or what ever, this sounds a ton better than what bell is charging.

Im here to find great deals, and to save money. Like the $70 I saved on my canon battery grip, saving at least $7.50 per dvd from getting them through that columbia house deal, etc.

The stuff that makes it worth while. :0)

Bell does not charge $1/minute, I was paying $.05/min before I switched. I switched to save $.015/min, plus the $4/month system access fee.

I phoned bells operator to find out the rate from ottawa to toronto a lil while ago and she said something like $1 a minute, give or take. I dont remember exactly. But thats with out any sort of long distance rate plan. Plus it was before 5pm. Im pretty sure it was around that rate.
