Well I am in Canada, so I've never sent or received USPS money orders. But I assume they are pretty darn safe.

I have never had an issue with them in over 10 years of receiving them for items sold.
Having said that, they do have 2 different styles = a green one that is for US only, and a pinkish coloured one that is international. The green ones I deposit into a US bank account when I go to NY.
If you are selling an item and receiving a USPS money order, you will want the international MO unless you a have a means to deposit or cash it at a US post office.

Don't trust the USPS money order. We received several fake ones before. Here's a list of things you should check before accepting it.

A money order froma bank would be the advisable choice over a usps money order.. i work in a bank and we put atleast a 21 day hold on usps money orders due to the high number of counterfeits. depending on your bank and history with them, they may also put a hold on the m/o.

from what I know there are some fakes ones going around. so waht you can do is make sure it clears before you ship the item out
The green ones are cashable in US only
and the pink ones are the international ones which can be deposit here in Canada also.
if you want you can drive over to the states and cash them. they will call in the check on the spot to make sure its a real money order and give you cash.

Bank money orders can be fraudulent as well. It's easy enough to say that you accept ONLY USPS money orders, and then you have only one specimen whose security features you have to be familiar with (and the USPS money orders do have a number of good security features).
Check http://www.usps.com/missingmoneyorders/security.htm and be sure to check the serial against the hot lists to make sure someone didn't steal blanks from the USPS and then "home print" you a payment.

Are you serious? There's 10000000x more fraud by PayPal. A GOVERNMENT ISSUE money order is a problem?
