turns out i have the most useless PSP (the 2.6 firmware with TA-082 motherboard) for being able to run homebrew stuff. i had 3 basic questions that i was hoping someone with a lot more knowledge can help me with.
1. i want to change the wallpaper to a picture of my choice. is doing it as simple as copying a JPEG over to a memory card and plugging it in?
2. what's the easiest program to convert avi or mpg movies into PSP format?
3. am i still able to run homebrew applications to play emulator games (not ISO)? if so, which ones are the best in your opinion?
thanks so much!

Detailed answer to number 1:
Copy you pictures to X:PSP>PHOTO (where X represents the drive which your psp should be). The PSP screen size 480x272 pixels so I usually crop or resize my images to meet those dimensions. When your using the PSP, you open the picture, then press triangle. You'll get a few choices, and one of them will be using it as a background. Selcet that and it will ask if you are sure if thats what you want to do, and select 'yes'. and there it is! a background. You can also make folders in X:PSP>PHOTO to organize or manage the pictures.

Ya PSPVideo9 is a lot more easy to use, but the versatility is less than the 3Gp converter.
As for homebrew. You have confict in your questions.
You can set your own pictures by copying the pictures into the PHOTOS folder, but in order to change the background, you must update the firmware of the PSP.
And once you update the firmware, you lose A LOT of homebrew potential.
And IMHO, I would prefer to have a cool background, play new games on UMD, and have an internet browser, then run homebrew.
I didn't pay $250 to play old school nintendo games. Even though some are enjoyable... but that is what PC emulators are for.

You can do both, I have 1.5 and I use devhook to get to 2.71. It's great I can put on a good wallpaper and use the browser. When I turn it off, it doesnt go back to 1.5. I just turn it on again and there it is, 2.71.

Exactly, the only emulator I played on it was the Sega Genesis emulator and I was gravely disappointed by the quality of the FM emulation. After that I was like forget it.

I used snes9tyl or something like that to play some megaman games (11,12, and 13) and MEgaman is still fun.

I don't know.. most Genesis games are pretty much perfected on the PSP now, you should go download the lastest version of DGen and see for yourself.
