It's juvenile, but I have a hard time getting past Batman vs Wolverine too...
Hope it's better than The Illusionist.

Saw it, decent but unspectacular movie. There's some neat effects, but no reason to care about the main characters. That said, Rebecca Hall is quite good as Sarah and bears an uncanny resemblance to Rachel McAdams.
The storytelling is muddy, with key points that don't make sense until you've sat down and carefully examined the film. While a certain amount of this adds interesting layers and rewatchability to a film, there's far too much of it here and the lack of compassion the leads inspire don't merit the effort.
Between this and The Illusionist, I'd point in Edward Norton's direction.

Yeah, checked out this movie a few weeks back and it was definitely a good watch. Not amazingly great but also not a stinker. I would say it was worth the 10$ to watch in theatres.
Anyway, could I get some clarification on something.
SPOILER QUESTION:
So we find out that the machine that Tesla built for Hugh Jackman was creating clones of him and that he (Hugh) was drowning himself after every time he does the trick. My question is, which Hugh Jackman was getting teleported? In other words, which Hugh Jackman (original or clone) was getting drowned every night? Or was the teleported version randomly chosen...sometimes the original and sometimes the clone?
END OF SPOILER QUESTION

Didn't he say something like he was scared because he wouldn't know whether he was the one in the tank or not every night ? I hardly think it matters though. Both of them will feel like the same person anyhow.
Incidentally, it's this whole science fiction thing that really put me off this movie. It just felt so weirdly out of place.

another "clarification" (seems like this movie had some bits that weren't very clear)
The Christian Bale character. Where did his double come from? Wasn't it like, they just pulled it out of thin air?

uhh.. Christian Bale's clone was his brother..

ok, but where did his brother come from? didn't they just pull THAT out of thin air?
how come Hugh Jackman and Michael Caine didn't know about the brother?

They revealed it all at the end. Did you miss that part? I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, but... *spoilers* throughout the movie the twin brothers would take turns being 'Alfred Borden'. Like those knots they were tying at the beginning that killed Angier's wife. One would tie it one way and the other didn't know what the other had tied. Angier would ask which knot did Borden tie, and Borden didn't know cause it was the other that tied it. Also Borden told the kid that a magician doesn't reveal his secrets otherwise it becomes worthless so they kept this twin brother thing a big secret even from the audience. What was good was that there was tons of foreshadowing/symbolism like when they revealed the canary bird trick. The canary in the cage gets crushed with the collapsible cage and the audience thinks 'the brother' is the same canary. That turned out to be Angier's trick with his clones.
Good movie, worth a second watch.

^^ Cool! I hadn't even thought about the canary thing...you're quite observant. Another thing about the foreshadowing was the whole I Love You bit by Christian Bale where the wife could detect when he meant it and when he didn't. Heh, my friend thought it meant that Christian Bale was such a good magician that he could hide his true feelings even from loved ones....hahaha, don't think so.

Heh, I only realized all that stuff after the movie. During the movie I was stumped on how they did the trick and how it was going to end. It'll be good to watch again and pick up all the clues that were shown.

Dont' forget Wolverine indeed. It's funny how you just glossed over Hugh Jackman. I think to date, this guy is pretty much fluff as a credible actor. Bale can and does it all though. One of the most underrated actor and that's not even going into his preperation methods.
Chris Nolan is also a great director not seen since pioneers like Kubrick. Definitely going to watch this.

Interesting movie...certainly keeps you glued and guessing. It's one of those movies that a lot more will probably be revealed on a subsequent viewing; you'll probably catch a bunch of hints as to the ending.
I think I wasn't paying attention or there was just too much going on in my head but who's Ackerman? He's not vital to the story but I was just wondering who he was when he showed up after Jackman's return because I had forgotten...I could probably go over the beginning of the film again and find out but I'm too lazy...
And David Bowie was great :)

Sorry, reviving an old post. It took me a while but I finally watched the DVD. It was a great movie until the sci-fi movie came out of nowhere ! It was soooooooooooo out of place ! The "twist" with the sci-fi part was lame and didn't go with the movie as there was no consistency, clue, etc. Yes, the hats and cat was shown but it was so forced, so "huh ? ". It's like watching Zorro and somebody breaks out the light sabre. It would have been a better movie without the sci-fi part as most of the stuff would have been explained anyways. Unless I completely missed the point of the sci-fi, then it ruined it for me.
Now I gotta check out the Illusionist next.

Hey I didn't even realize there was a thread on this movie. I watched The Prestige a few months back and I thought it was great as well. I agree with you though the sci-fi part was very much so out of place. I loved the foreshadowing and the theme of "are you watching?" (I think that's what it was) with Christian Bale's character though.
I did the same as you and watched the Illusionist right after. I really didn't like that movie. I thought it would have been similiar in the respect of showing the tricks and how they were done, but the Illusionist doesn't provide that. It was more of a romance movie (imho) with some special effects that are passed off as his tricks. The final trick seemed nothing more than a Romeo & Juliet copycat, except with a happy ending...

Well, if you read up on Tesla's work, you'll be surprised at the number of 'sci-fi' advanced things he invented.
Did you know he actually invented wirelss electricity transmitted over air? Ofcourse the electric companies didn't like it because it meant that they couldn't charge people's usage of electricity.

I thought the sci-fi fit in fine really. The movie was excellent.

Nikola Tesla may not have been given the distinction of genius, but the man is nothing short of one. The biography I watched really painted Thomas Edison as this monster who stole what is rightfully Tesla's and it's a shame that the world over celebrates Edison as the inventor of electricity and the light (bulb).
Shame.
Ah, the climax was a little disappointing. I was hoping for much more mystery rather than science fiction.
