I've read awhile back that dell was recalling some laptop batteries that were suspected of causing such fires on dell laptops.

I wonder if these things explode instantly, or if they start hissing for a while before they go kaboom. Seeing that no one got injured, they probably had warning before it exploded. And seeing that it's from Dell, the laptop probably said something in a calm male voice. Something like..."Dell self-destruct sequence activated. Please clear area in 5 seconds and visit Dell.ca for more great deals."

which rock did you just crawl out under from?
it could easily have been the user's fault for using a non oem battery.
which laptop manufacturer would you suggest?

Seems almost everyone's recalling batteries at one time or another:
Apple: http://news.com.com/Apple+recalls+more+G4+batteries/2100-1005_3-5715002.html
HP: http://www.itwire.com.au/content/view/3986/53/
Fujitsu: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/06/15/fujitsu_recall_batteries/
... and that's just from the first few googled pages too.
But it definately has more impact to have art when one of these things go off :)

Too true. I'm not entirely sure it's the fault of the guys who are putting them together...I think its the industry as a whole right now. Only recently has the focus been more on power efficiency, over raw power, and more power=less battery time. So they push development of better batteries that last longer, and probably don't test them as much as they should before bringing them to market. Silly move....it'll cost them more to settle lawsuits than it would to develop the product properly...

go check ebay for them, you get them for most popular brands.
they're not made by the manufacturer (ie dell, hp, toshiba) but they will still fit the laptops. they do and will work but they're not as well made as oem laptop batteries. usually they will work without too much of a problem, but stress them too much and bad things happen.
alll those incidents you hear of exploding phones and laptops, they always seem to happen in india or some east asian country. why do you think that is?

Nah, more like: "End of message, this message will self destruct in 5 seconds." Like in Mission Impossible.

One particular incident does not prove anything. Maybe the battery was already damaged, maybe it was nonDell battery, maybe the battery was subjected to harsh temperatures before (in a car for example). Maybe it was shorted at some point.
Any laptop battery can explode in the right conditions.

In 10 years I've had 4 Dell notebooks... in all that time I had one LCD screen failure, covered under warranty. Shipped to Dell on Friday evening and received back all fixed up by 8:00AM on Monday.
