Hello everybody, one of my closest friends is getting married in August, and im using this as an excuse to buy a new camera. I had the Canon sd500 (purchased on boxing day) but i sold it a month ago because i wasnt using it too much. Since then i've been reading much about the dslr world.

I know if i were to buy another camera it would be dslr. As of right now I am leaning towards the Nikon D50 because it seems gearned more to new users, and it is lower in price. (I figure with the money saved i could use that on lenses) I have NO experience with ANY dslr camera, and i would be first from my group of friends or family to take the plunge so there isnt really anyone i could goto for advice.

I have 3 questions for rfd:
1. would i be able to learn the controls of the nikon d50 by the end of august?
2. Being a newbie to photography, is the standard lense sufficient?
3.and also wondering if anyone has seen any good deals for this camera lately?

Thank you :)

If you were not using a compact, easy to carry SD500 much, then I don't believe that you will use the dslr much more. That said, go for it. You might end up a skilled amatuer/pro photographer.

To be frank, DSLRs won't magically take wonderful pictures for you. You still need to know a fair bit about photography. This is particularly true in tough shooting conditions like dim lighting or when shooting fast action.

Since you didn't use your SD500 much, I am unsure if you have a large enough interest in photography to spend the time to learn it. Like most things, it will take a fair bit of dedication and commitment.

In some cases your pics from a dslr might be worst than the pics taken by a p&s camera.

Like i said up there ^, i did play with it alot randomly around the house, but i never had events or what not to use my camera. That said i would also like to say i have a large interest in photography and this would be the start of a long jounry of reading, trail and error, and lots and lots of practce :)

*yes you are right!
and this may very well be the case, that is why i asked if one reasonable person is able to learn (not master) how to use most functions of a dslr by the end of august :)

*I have NO experience in photography, but i AM very keen on learning, and i think this will be the start of a new hobby for me :) sorry i didnt clarify that earlier
Now that, thats out of the way, am I okay in choosing the D50?

Why not look at the Rebel XT as a alternative... it has 25% more pixels and is just as nice and about the same price as the d50 ....

I did; however, from where i stand in terms of 'photography skill' i dont think i will notice the difference. The price is about a 150$ difference

It doesn't come down to skill it comes down to 25% more pixels in which you can't upgrade in the future without replacing the camera!

There's a thread on the D50 in electronics. Good posts in there.
