Hi, i'm in the situation that I want to add anther hd. But in my case my 7800GT is too long and I can't put in anther hd. I am wondering if the footprint of the 7900GT is shorter and if so anyone want to buy a evga geforce 7800GT CO?

I did the step-up program with eVGA from my 7800GT CO SE model I got at boxing day, and upgraded to the 7900GT SuperClocked edition. It definitely does not seem any smaller, and I would even say possibly bigger because this model seems to come with a special fan and heatsink (although I'm sure not all brands are the same)
Sorry I can't tell you more, but I'd say don't bet on it

ATI uses the larger die. I would think they would be bigger then the nvidia.
IMHO bigger is always better. Who wants a stubby when you could have a foot long?

The 7600gt is even shorter, but all of the x1800/x1900 are long so your out of luck.

Looking up the dimensions of an x1800 vs a 7900 gt, I came up with 204 mm compared to 198 mm. So yes, the ATI card is slightly longer.. by 6 milimeters, or approximately half a centimeter. Not enough clerance either way.
You'll need to go to the 'budget' models to get a shorter card, like the x1600 or 7600 series.

I also did the step up from the same two cards. I found the 7900GT to be 1 inch shorter than the 7800GT.:)

You could always buy and try (then return) a card at a store that offers good returns.

well I could but I don't really need a new card my 7800 works fine. I just want room to add another hd in the hd rack of my case. But since that card SO long I can't install one!!
guess I need a new case, or find a rack to put the hd in a 5.25 bay. prob is I like my chieftec matrix case!
the 1inch shorter might be enough but it would be tight.

Either way you'll want to find the exact physical dimensions. An eyeballing 1 inch can be much less then 1 inch when measured with a ruler.
It seems all the 'high-end' video cards, ie: anything that wouldn't be a downgrade for you are longer then ~195 mm.
