Does a Better Modem = Faster Speeds?

I have an ACATEL Speed Touch Home modem and would upgrading to a newer SpeedStream modem make a difference and whats the fastest SpeedStream modem out there?

no, your ISP limits your speed/bandwidth.

Your Alcatel Speed Touch should support up to 8Mbps (max of ADSL, IIRC), so unless you're not syncing at full speed, a new modem *might* sync at better rate

If your line is in good condition and you have no problems then no but if you are far from the CO and don't have a good line, a newer speedstream modem might help with stability and allow you to achieve slightly higher attainable speed.

A new modem won't improve the speed, as the speed profile set in the ISP.
But a new modem might improve the line stability, ie. less disconnects and such.

No idea for the "best", but my Speedstream 5200 E242 is preety good with keeping sync on my mediocre phone line.

If you compare the two companies, Alcatel actually makes a superior product.

usually no. i had an old samsung inforanger (5 years old) and my isp bumped up the speed to 7mb while i was only getting around 4. i swapped it for a newer RCA modem and was able to get the new speed.
