I am thinking of setting up an FTP for some friends and hosting it on my machine. What software do you guys use to run an FTP server?

Open source is the way to go.

Filezilla and Filezilla Server is my suggesion. Simple and functional.

I use this so I don't have to leave my system on 24/7

You have to keep in mind that if you just have regular dsl your upload speed won't be so great. If someone is using all your bandwidth to download a file your local internet will be dead slow.

We had zftpServer (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/zftpserver.html)(Freeware).

It's simple. Although I did find a bug with it where it sometimes makes about 25 Admin accounts on installation and you have to delete them all one by one because it can only take one acocount with the same name.

At work I think they use SlimFTP or something called that.

Personally, I've used ServU server and it's really nice.

Oh, MS IIS ain't that bad either...

try filezilla: free, easy to set up, installs as a service.

I would recommend Titan FTP server. It allows you to set up SFTP which is a lot more secure than FTP as it sends data via an encrypted channel

Quick 'n Easy FTP Lite (http://www.pablosoftwaresolutions.com/html/quick__n_easy_ftp_server_lite.html) is freeware, easy to setup, administrate & take down if necessary.

Its small (2.3mb). I've used it for well over 2+ years.

Bulletproof FTP always worked the best for me - its extremely easy to get going, and yet powerful enough to support some advanced functions.

Well if your using your daily Windows box, my vote goes for running VMWare player and a Fedora Core 5 appliance. That way your daily box is safe and you have room to grow.
