LCD Projection vs LCD flat panel

Can anyone tell me the advantages and disadvantages and comparisons between LCD Projection vs LCD flat panel?

I see a lot of lcd vs plasma vs dlp etc but I can't find much comparing projectors vs flat panels.

I was planning on getting a 37 inch lcd flatpanel and some guys were telling me to concider a lcd projector. I'm old school I guess, I like a sharp, bright image and I remember projectors being more dim, pixels blown up where you can see spaces between them (screen door effect) and the colors werent as sharp. If I want an lcd I want a perfectly sharp image that's not blurry or dim. Are lcd projectors different now?

There are projectors which will give you just as good picture as a flat panel..or even better..

what is critical is your installation and WHERE you're installing it. I've got a DLP projector and a DLP 50" in the same room. They are both bright enough and the projector is on ECONO setting for light output. The key being the room which is fully light controlled and the screen I'm using.

Putting in a flat panel is fairly easy....putting in projector takes much more planning, work and $$$$ but what do you want? A measily 37" or a nice big 110" picture?? :D

I love my 110" screen.

If you're looking for something as a "daily viewer", as in, you'll come home every day from work, grab a beer and watch TV, DO NOT go for a Projector setup. Reaons being:
-Projector Lamp Life: Most projectors only have bulbs that their life is rated for between 1,000 to 1,500 hours, if you're using the projector just 4 hours a day, you're looking at replacing the bulb almost yearly.

-Projector lamp price: This is a no brainer, the bulbs on not cheap. They'll range in price from $300 to $600, sometimes more depending on the brand/markup/etc...

-Ambient light: Again a no brainer. If you want THE BEST picture on your projector you're going to want a completely dark room with no other light source.

But how is the image sharpness and quality on the projector?
I'm just thinking if you take an image and make it bigger the sharpness and smoothness will get worse as it's expanded.
I personally think movie theatres look crappy for quality, all the crap you see is made huge, I'd rather see it all tighened up on a smaller screen moved closer to the couch. I'd rather quality vs size but maybe you can have both quality and size nowadays.

Why did you get a DLP instead of lcd? All the reviews I've been reading this morning say lcd is better.

I don't really ever watch tv, I just turn it on to enjoy something cool once in a while like a movie or xbox 360. I don't watch sports or tv, I don't even have cable anymore.
I also have a dedicated room in the basement I can use for whatever I want for special occasions. I guess I have a good opportunity to have a nice rectangular dark room for a projector and not worry much about lamp life.

Why did you get a DLP instead of lcd? All the reviews I've been reading this morning say lcd is better.

There's 2 types of DLP available, Single chip and 3 chip. Single chip processes all the light on one chip, as a result will sometimes create what's called the Rainbow Effect, a VERY simple explaination is that you start to see lines and colour seperation within a stream of colour.

3 chip DLP uses 3 seperate chips to process the colours (very much like a prism), its image quality far exceeds that of LCD and plus you won't get the ever loved screen door effect. The only setback is that 3 chip is usually more expensive.
