View Full Version : my mother is addicted to Korean soaps

I've just realized my mother is absolutely addicted to korean soap operas. She just goes on bittorrent and downloads them one after the other and watches them from morning till night (when she's not working). I think they're such a stupid waste of time.
Should I just let it be, and let her addiction continue? It's been like this for over six months.

Your mother knows how to use bittorrent? That's cool.

I don't think its a problem, unless your mother doen't understand korean.

She doesn't understand korean..she just watches the english subtitles. I don't even care that much since I'm often away from home (for school etc), but I find it odd that she's sitting in front of a screen and watching those mindless soaps day in and day out. Hell, there are way better things to do like reading a book or taking a walk outside.

nothing wrong with that. it's no different how some chinese people were addicted to watching chinese soaps - except that the storylines have gone downhill since and have migrated over to korean soaps which are actually better in comparison these days having garnered huge popularity in HK.

that's pretty cool imo! she can use torrents, knows where to get ones she likes, knows about how to get subtitles to work, other moms dont even know what the internet is.

Aren't all of those soaps the same? Some really innocent girl who has a childhood friend whos her stalker, she doesn't like him but likes the new boy in town. The new boy wears a scarf all the time regardless of what the weather is like. The innocent girl and the new boy go on one date and throw snow at one another or it rains or something and they're deeply in love after one date. They never see each other again after that for the longest time because one of them is in a coma, or is missing, or injured, or has to leave for reasons she/he cannot tell him. All the while when the girl is waiting for this boy to return the childhood friend stalks her and tells her how much he loves her and shes like wtf get off me.
Korean dramas are too sappy slow and boring. I saw one or two of em bits and pieces here and there when my mom was watching and sometimes i got so bored i fell asleep.

I was exactly thinking of the same thing. But yeah, my mom is also addicted to soap operas on tv. those that usually run between noon and 3pm or something. She even got my dad hooked. I just...walk away. :D

You sir, have just described about 50% of all Asian Dramas. The other 50% are just slight variations or the same general boy meets girl idea.
I was addicted to Korean soaps before too, watching like 3 or 4 a day. Remind her how much time she's actually wasting and she'll kick out of it soon.
I've been clean for 2 months and counting now. Now I spend my TV watching time on the Daily Show, Colbert Report, Family Guy, Mythbusters, and Food Jammers.

I don't even tell my mom that you can get Korean soaps off the internet.... otherwise she'd want me to download them for her and hog my computer
The one good thing about Korean dramas is that all the actors/actresses are hot. But other than that, they're more naive than The O.C.

Same old story line + emotional music theme that gets played every episode multiple times.

I completely agree...and it's not just Chinese people...the entire Asian continent is crazy for Korean dramas..
Some countries like Vietnam have threatened to ban K-dramas unless Korea imports the same number of Viet shows....which of course would never happen.
It's so sad to see so many people immerse themselves in Korean dramas and forget about that they have their own culture too.

korean soaps are way better then chinese ones
1) the people are more beautiful (subjective, but overall)
2) Cuter/Funnier things happen in k soaps. Chinese fob girls that try and act cute just get soooo annoying. Quality of production imo is also better
3) i dont really see how watching k soaps makes you lose your culture. thats like saying all the chinese people are are losing their culture because they watch 24/lost/etc.
4) Why doesn't Vietnam make shoes that vietnemes people want to see then?
Korean dramas are just the best dramas that asian people are making.
People watch what they like *shrugs*
I dont really watch chinese soaps but I remember I saw one on tv once where the son in the future talks to his dad in the past through a magic cell phone and together they solve crimes
-_- with shows like this no wonder no one watches it
Good K Dramas: Full House, My Girl, My Name is Kim Sam Soon

Eh if everyone likes them, they must be good, although I find it stupid and repetitive.
Story Line concerning Love with some effective music that gets overplayed = Korean Show.

How do you guys think Korean dramas compare to Japanese dramas? I actually have a preference towards Japanese dramas but I don't really know why cause I've never watched any K-dramas and have no motivation to.
I've heard a lot of good things about K-dramas but have never gone as far as researching which series are good. Perhaps I am biased towards them.

Soaps are meant for women BY DEFINITION. And what CAN YOU do to NOT let her get addicted?? She's not your teenage daughter, she's your MOTHER!

Yeah, I found that funny as well.
And I agree, for some reason only women watch Korean soaps. My dad keeps on making fun of my mom for watching "shows for teenagers" at her age

not the entire continet. Pak,ind, bang and arab countries have other homemade useless soaps running for decades :D :D and I am sure palestien and israel people have no time to watch some korean soaps. Srilanka, maldives, singapore have their own soaps and those telecasted from south india.
so dont summarize!!!

yeah its true that all the soaps are pretty similar: rich guy, hopsital, etc etc.
its the actors themselves that will make the show good or not then
i was getting mine from daddicts, superfantasticclub and my gf
ive only fully seen full house which is one of the more famous ones

In general, K-drama is better then C-drama and Dorama, but K and C dramas are far too long. You may enjoy the first 10 episodes, but afterwards you'll realize how the story line isn't going anywhere really new, and how much time you're actually wasting watching the drama when there's still 20 more episodes to go. It's happened for me for every single long drama I've seen. That's why I prefer Dorama. Sort, sweet, straight to the punch, with plenty of laughs inbetween.
Anyways, a pretty good Dorama that's out right now is Kurosagi based on the manga. It's about a swindler who swindles swindlers. I actually highly recommend it to any drama watchers. It's started getting stupid now that they're focussing on the protagonist's relation ship, but each episode is bound to give you a good laugh at how the swindle is played out.

sometimes i think dorama's are too short or intentionally made sappy... *cough*summer snow*cough*... -_- ... but this dorama u speak of about swindlers does sound rather intruiging... id like to know what the title is..

The drama is called "Kurosagi", and the real name of the protagonist is Kurosaki, but goes by the name of Kurosagi in the underground swindling circles.

When commenting on Chinese TV series, you guys may want to differentiate between those made in Hong Kong, China (mainland) and Taiwan, as they are VERY different in terms of production quality, casting (and acting) as well as script writing.
