It's one of those slacker Ontario laws. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING will be business as usual tommorow. (banks, government etc being the exception) It's going to be a crazy day tommorow for anyone working in retail and selling big ticket items.

Ontario grocer to defy ban, open Canada Day
SCOTT ROBERTS (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20060701.CANADADAY01/TPStory/TPNational/Ontario/)
Last-minute shoppers looking to stock up on barbecue supplies for the long weekend can to do so at several A&P and Dominion stores in Ontario today as the grocery chain plans to defy a provincial law requiring large retail outlets to close on Canada Day.
A&P Canada, which owns Dominion, said this week it was planning to ignore the Retail Business Holidays Act, which makes it illegal for stores larger than 2,400 square feet and pharmacies larger than 7,500 square feet to open on eight statutory holidays, including July 1.
The grocer is among a number of retailers planning to break the law. It plans to open 37 A&P locations and 29 Dominion stores across the province, although it's unclear how many will be operating illegally.
Newspaper advertisements this week suggest several clothing stores will do the same. A similar situation is developing in Nova Scotia, where some retailers are challenging that province's law banning large stores from opening on Sundays.
The moves come as federal tax breaks enacted by the Conservatives take effect today, including a reduction in the goods and services tax to 6 per cent from 7 per cent.
Despite the gumption of some stores, most Ontario retailers will be closed today even though Saturday is the most popular shopping day of the week.
"Our intention all along was to abide by the law as we would normally do," said Geoff Wilson, spokesman for grocery giant Loblaws. "We are not going to be defying the act."
Loblaws says it will legally open some stores today. Under the law, retailers located in areas municipally deemed as tourist zones are allowed to operate on holidays. In Toronto, those areas include Yorkville, Harbourfront, the Distillery District and the Yonge Street business improvement area.
The Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors has long challenged the relevance of this law, saying it creates an unfair advantage for smaller retailers.
"As an industry we've been working to have the act changed," spokeswoman Kim McKinnon said. "It's always been based on consumer need."
Fines for defying the act range from $500 to $50,000. Repeat offenders can be forced to hand over all of the day's gross sales, according to one provision.
But questions have been raised as to how strictly the law is enforced.
"A law is only as good as the willingness to enforce it," said Derek Nighbor, vice-president of national affairs for the Retail Council of Canada. "If stores decide to open and if they are not fined, what kind of a message does that send to the people who are behaving properly?"
It's up to municipal police services to fine retailers who illegally open their doors on holidays.

To go off-topic a bit, is everything except government run operations open on Monday? Because of the holiday falling on Saturday, I'm curious what will be open Monday.
