Hi, do you have plastic covering the remote control, the dining room chairs, the lamp shades, etc? I have seen this in more than one home. Is this OK or is it ghetto?

That's quite possibly the most ******** thing I've ever heard.

Plastic covered remote? Lamp shade? Couch? Dining Room CHAIRS?!?!

Hahahahah not be but I know people who do it, it looks hilarious. After a few years the plastic gets so dried up when you touch the lampshade the plastic flakes off.

I guess remote, ok fine I'll give you that one, but dining room chairs and Lamp shade.....

I don't even keep the plastic screen covering on the screen of a new cell-phone! :o

Its ridiculous when the protection used to protect a device or something, is uglier than if that device were scratched up.

And how bout all those chinese students (mainly girls) who wrap their textbook in like, Hello Kitty gift-wrap and stuff? Its not like its going to garner more money on the used textbook market coz its in 'mint' condition

It's not just a Chinese thing. My friend's Italian. And not only is the TV remote covered up, his entire living room is roped off and not for use.

As for covering up the TV remote, it's a cleanliness thing. I bring a plastic bag with me when I go to hotels and cover up the TV remote before I use it.

Haven't you heard the report where they even found seminal fluid on hotel TV remotes?

Most people consider shrink-wrapping the remote control, putting plastic wrap on the sofa, leaving the tag on your clothes as social taboo. However, as society progresses into a more cost-conscious mood, this has become a more common thing to do. For instance, we have this done because if we were to damage our converter, it would be hard to get a replacement for the unit it belongs to as it is a propriatory system.

I bought a good one through Ebay, for ExpressVu receiver. It was used [and I didn't even put a plastic bag on it when we first got it, to cover over the germs!!] but worked fine. It was around $20, and usually they would be around $50 - $70. It works all over the house. :)

I wonder if a clear condom would work? {I'm not actually kidding - it seriously might!] It would stretch, and fit the keys very nicely, I would think... you'd have to twist tie it at the bottom and cut off the extra. Just skip the fruit flavored ones, as you'd hate to see your dog or cat licking the remote!

You've got to be kidding me. Those are the same people that touch everything in that hotel room. Your doors, the elevator, the ice machines, the fridge(if you have one), the toilet flushing handle. Do you wear gloves everywhere you go? Have you ever touched money before? Think of how many people have touched that money before you, what have they done? Don't think any of them have ever masturbated or done drugs before?

I'm not suggesting you go around licking the controller but touching it certainly isn't going to do you any harm.

I've seen people rap their stuff in plastic and it just looks stupid and feels odd. You bought the stuff to enjoy it, so actually enjoy it, not the plastic you're sitting on our touching.

You have a lot of valid points; but next time you're in a hotel, look very, very closely at the remote, look at the crumbs, the grime, the food, the ?? and see if you can do it without cringing. :cheesygri You're right, it's probably silly to do all of that... they do clean the rooms with windex, fantastic, etc. [albeit generic brand, LOL.]

I just picked up a 680 or something like that Harmony and I'm wondering how I'm going to protect it. My 8month old son will have his way with it sooner or later.

i think there was a thread on remote plastic cover b4 and i think i talked about putting remote in a condom too
lol
the problem is u have to wipe the condom very clean before putting on
because usually condoms come with lubricants or spermicidal or like u said fruit flavouring lubricant (Tropical by Trojan is pretty good)

heheh

not all condoms are completely transluscent either
most are half translucent with a hint of white hue

To get it tight like a vacuum mold, you have to burn it.

To get it tight like a vacuum mold, you have to burn it.

Could you shrink it [the condom around the remote, I mean!! :D ] via using a hair dryer? {Normally I call it a blow dryer, but I can see all the fun that will arise from a comment like this. :razz: }

Now I remember reading about using condoms over remote controls; I read it here on RFD first [when Evil Techie commented about it], come to think of it.

my mom wraps some of our furniture and such in plastic.

dining room cushions are wrapped in plastic....so uncomfortable to sit on, and she makes cloth slipcovers for the sofa cushions.

kitchen and dining room tables have a sheet of clear vinyl (i think) instead of a table cloth. makes cleaning a lot easier.

Ahhh! I just remembered. Yesterday, I had a bunch of friends over to watch the France/Brazil football game. Ppl brought lots of beer over and we ordered a few pizzas & KFC. Just before France scored, one of the guys bolted to the washroom. We promptly heard the sonic fireworks from the washroom. The type of rapid and hollow pinging sound you only get when you have the runs. The pinging sound was followed by a big bang and then SWOOSHhhhhhhhh...... !

We all looked at each other with a smirk and then Henri tipped in the goal. A few guys yelled "Goooooooooal!!!!". With all this excitement, dude runs out of the washroom without even flushing to find out what's going on. We tried to hide the PVR remote control but it was too late. He grabbed it to see the replay. We made him go back to flush the toilet and quickly changed the plastic cover on the remote control.

For those without the plastic cover on the remote control..... how often do you change the remote control?

yep TV remote only. this happened after 10 years without a remote. the remote started to collect dust, crap and you had to press it very hard to make it work. my dad had to clean it with some alcohol. apparently, there's some dirt between some of the circuits.

did i mention the paint for the numbers came off... so now it's in plastic wrap to prevent more things from going inside the remote./

man, so much paranoia around germs. yeah, wrap that hotel remote. but let's touch all these door handles. you might as well be turn yourself in the Bubble Boy.

why do you think you see those ads, (especially in the hospitals) to WASH YOUR HANDS? maybe cuz it's a good idea.

you should also avoid touching your face and eyes frequently cuz your hands are dirty.

you can't protect yourself from everything, but you can limit a lot of it by washing your hands.

it doesn't even need to be thorough soap and water job. just a quick rinse and wipe is a whole lot better than nothing at all. a whole lot.

I've never heard of wrapping the remote until this thread. (Therefore, my family doesn't do it) ...
I like the explanation and the germs reason, but I've had my remotes for years-upon-years with no problems. If anything, hit the store and buy a universal remote for $10, which will likely be better than the crappy original one you have.

Wrapping the remotes, lamp shades and couches will go down as a debate never solved. It's like a car collector who doesn't drive his car (and cries when it is rained on for the first time (Ref. Barret-Jackson Auction) ...
Some like viewing and protecting ... others like using and enjoying and disposing of when it's finished with.

Reminds me of the movie with Jack Nicholson, "As Good As It Gets" - great movie.
Nicholson plays the part of an obsessive compulsive guy and is afraid to touch anything for fear of germs.
They show a scene where he's washing his hands and he takes a bar of soap out of the plastic, washes his hands and throws the soap out. Then he gets a new bar of soap, unwraps it and washes his hands again and throws it out.
Needless to say, he has a stack of bars of soap above his bathroom sink. :)

I keep my remotes in the plastic bag they came in. I turnover a lot of my electronics, so when I resell my stuff, the buyer appreciates that the remote is still in pristine condition.

I don't keep the chesterfield, lamps, etc in plastic, but I know a few families who do. Sometimes when people move around in their seats, I think they've blown a fart.

Hehe, and I thought we were the only ones.
Yup, we saran wrap all our remotes (except for one, which we no longer care about anymore). I always do it now, and whenever the wrap/plastic gets torn or a little worn, just repeat the process! I like it, because it keeps all the remote's buttons legible and clean, and then there's always the dirt factor, which I hadn't thought of until this thread.
The only problem with wrapping is if the remote has a face that can flip/lift to reveal more buttons.

Haven't you heard the report where they even found seminal fluid on hotel TV remotes?
eewww!

I keep my remote in plastic when I travel. Let me explain. In hotel rooms, I always place my remote in a baggie. I never touch the damn thing. Think about all those lonely salesmen, watching hotel porn and you can understand why.

is that you bubble boy? do you keep ur money in baggies as well cuz that's a heck of alot more dirty than remote
