Two Canadians and eight other coalition soldiers were wounded Friday when two rockets hit the Kandahar base in Afghanistan.

One Canadian, artilleryman Master Bombadier Bounyarat Tanaphon Makthepharak from Ottawa, "is critically wounded," a military spokesman said.

He is being airlifted to a military hospital in Germany.

The rockets hit a group of tents in the evening, local time.

The CBC's David Common reported that he heard "a very large whistle, almost like a freight train was passing overhead."

That was followed by an explosion that forced the air from his lungs. Everybody then ran for the shelters.

Shards of hot metal showered the tent complex, Common said.

The base houses coalition soldiers from many countries, as well as civilians and base employees. It's the main Canadian base in Afghanistan, home to more than 2,000 soldiers.

Taliban militants have launched a number of rocket attacks on the base from a nearby mountain.

******. The Canadian Troops WANT to be there. If you know anything about soldiers you would know that they love the adventure and the sense of doing something for the good of mankind. But you knoww nothing of what it is to be a MAN - to be a soldier. You probably sit in mom's basment eating mom's food using mom's electricit and you think you have a big manhood because you spout crap like that. Just stop children like yourself would call to have them come home. Freaking unbelievable how ignorant and arrogant Canadians are. Stupid terrorist loving children. Maybe - just maybe - you could send out a Tim Horton's turck and get the Taliban addicted to "Timmies". Maybe then they wont attack you.

Perhaps he was recently banned...why else would he "know" so much about this site if he only joined this afternoon.

My Grandfather gave it to me for shooting down a 6 inch poplar tree at 150meters with an Enfield No.4 with around 200rounds; at the age of 7. My Father called me a woodpecker and my Grandfather corrected him and said "Nope, that's a peckerwood"... since then my whole Family has called me Peck.

My Grandfather, 2nd Lt. J.J.Mackie, Loyal Edmonton Regiment WW2, a sniper at the onset of the war...he taught me how to shoot, hunt, track, and survival training until I reached the age of 16.

[edit]Half of my family(the Hungarian side) all are American citizens...one of my cousins is serving in Iraq, while the other two are serving at home in the National Guard. I support their patriotic intentions 100%.

It isn't the Americans I have a problem with...it is the elite governing morons that I have an issue with.

really., I thought it was because they loved the concept of coming home with 6 months pay TAXFREE, not to mention all incidentals, danger pay, Seniority pay, and UN pay, Separation pay, blah blah blah. You wonder why there's always a concentration of dealerships around bases ;)

I still hope Canada hasn't pissed away any credibility we had as peacekeepers and humanitarians to stay there and do something constructive for the people and country instead of Harper's continued love of being the Bush bitchboy.

However if it's akin to what he's done to Canada's reputation with Kyoto somehow I suspect it may be getting to a point where Canada will just have to completely pull out and resume our previous international role in other countries in need.

Edited to add: I know it's kinda off topic but after hearing on tonight's CTV news that 1/2 of all this defence spending will go to US contractors it got me wondering how much (if any) they gave to Harper's campaign.

Anybody know if that sort of information is public and if so where to request it?
